Russia under Putin has recovered from the post collapse and is still the 2nd strongest military on Earth. Putin is a master of diplomacy and politics: he has succeeded in Syria, and along with Iran, will become the dominant presence in the Middle East; his propaganda is unmatched, rallying his country to itself, and convincing many in the west, India, China, and elsewhere that the U.S. is an outdated monster and that there is another way for the world; he seized Crimea and Mickey stopped him. I'm certain Putin could annex Ukraine, Belarus, and Georgia tomorrow, and nobody would stand up to them. If the USSR reunited today it would have around 305million people. Only 70 million newcomers would be Asiatic (not including eastern Russians). The other 100million would be eastern euros and Caucasians. The world needs a competitor to the U.S.'s reign of terror. Russia has triumphed in Syria and Iran has the upper hand against Saud, but it isn't over yet. If the USSR reunited, the U.S. would be done for. It's politicians are outdated violent gorillas, the society is full of feminism and transsexuals, and racial tensions are about to explode. The USSR would become the superpower of the world and within 15 years the Middle East and North Africa would be salvaged. Though a mix of socialism and capitalism would fair better. If they stuck with communism, they'd need another Stalin.

Overall, a lot of people in modern Russia are nostalgic of the Soviet Union. The level of life wasn't extraordinary, it was modest, but there was a sense of community, destroyed by a lot of asian migrants in almost every large city, and a sense of goal, the USSR was built on the ideal of progress, the public idea was summarized as "we won't live happily but at least we'll try to built a happy future for our children". Many slogans were childishly naïve and they look kinda sad in comparison to modern day aggressive and ruthless Russian capitalism.

I dont think you get how geopolitics works nowadays. Economic power is the new military power. Military power doesn't matter as major states will no longer go to war because of nuclear weapons. It only matters for influencing non-major states such as Ukraine or Syria. And that doesn't matter for Russia because even if Putin reunited the entire USSR there would not be some magical new economic advantage gained. It would still be a country with an economy based almost entirely around selling oil. And as the world transitions away from the use of oil Russia will become increasingly irrelevant.
