Dont make your shading look too soft, sometimes things like shadow or skin shading have harder distinct lines.
read up on things like crosshatching, line dithering etc, methods which could help define things like texture, contour. Different things have different texture, which means light effects their shading differently, learning about pencil techniques can help better differentiate parts of the drawing instead of "pillow shading"
