With Utena, it's great on every level pretty much. The characters are charming and with each arc we get more information about them, especially their inner problems and traumas which just constantly add more depth to them. The visual direction is great, especially in terms of design and composition. The story is something along the lines of a shoujo manga but with a whole surreal, puzzle-narrative like in Eva, Lain, Twin Peaks or The Maxx. It's just dense in terms of ideas, unlike most works of art it doesn't waste your time.

There needs to be more of this , in these threads and less people just typing numbers.

I wish Natsume gets more season in the future. I mean Natori could potential harm Natsume for possessing a dangerous book since it's an exorcist job to get rid of them.

I watched the first 7 eps of Utena and just couldn't get into it. I loved the visuals, but I didn't feel like it was going anywhere with its characters or story despite having heard about them being great. You say that it doesn't waste time, but that's really what it felt like in those 7 eps to me. I'm not really a big fan of surreal narratives either, which didn' t help. I think I quit after the episode with the boxing kangaroo, becuase I really got nothing from it and it was way too surreal.

Yeah the show has some kinda wacky stuff, but you shouldn't take the first arc as a representation of the show as a whole. By the end, the show has pretty much entirely subverted the conclusion it reaches at episode 12.

Anne's appeal is watching a realistic young girl grow up. The relationships and dialogue are all very down to earth, and you can watch as Anne's surrounding shapes her identity, but she in turn changes the people around her.

Also the backgrounds and OST are fucking gorgeous.

I kind of get that. I think a big thing that allowed me to get into Utena was the fact that I watched Penguindrum. That one was sort of easier to watch in the first place because Ikuhara really gets into the more surreal and serious parts faster. Thanks to that I could easily get into it and then watching Utena I knew there would be payoff by the end and boy did it have fuckin payoff.
