Why do shonen MC's always have the most boring/generic signature abilities?
Dragon ball - Goku's signature attack is just a big ki blast. One that a dozen other characters can use no less. One piece - out of all the infinite Devill fruit possibilities Oda gives Luffy the ability to stretch. HxH - Gon turns out to be an enhancer because of course he fucking is and the only ability he develops is to charge up a big punch. Naruto - Ball of chakra that hits hard. Naruto proceeds to spam consistently bigger variations of this same attack for the entire series. Isn't even the only one who can use the ability. Bleach - Ichigo's signature (and only) ability is an AoE slash attack. His bankai is a fucking generic stat boost. BnhA - Deku hits things very hard JJBA part 3 - Jotaro's stand punches things very hard and very fast. Somewhat remedied in later parts for obvious reasons.
This shit isnt even limited to retard-fightan anime. Even in Shokugeki no Soma and sports anime MC-kun always has to be a "generalist" who is kinda good at everything but doesn't specialise in anything.
Do nips have something against unique abilities?
William Brown
>One piece - out of all the infinite Devill fruit possibilities Oda gives Luffy the ability to stretch. user, this is bullshit. Luffy is one of the only shonen MCs with a great and creative ability.
Angel Jackson
Because generic abilities have the broadest appeal and fit the fighting autist mentality that most MCs have
Oda utilises basic abilities in very creative ways, but it doesn't change the fact that Luffy's ability still boils down to "hit things very hard".
Angel King
Because shounenshit is awful.
James Cooper
>Gomu Gomu no Mi punch things >Gear 2 punch things fast >Gear 3 Get big and punch things even harder which shouldn't even work because that's not how mass, weight or momentum works. >Gear 4 Punch things hard AND fast. Brilliant
Sasuga deOda-sama
Leo Edwards
Gee I don't know faggot, the audience may no be convinced that the MC was ever peril when they've been giving the power of ionizing radiation.
Jaxson Thomas
It's hard to write around gimmicks/niche abilities. I mean you can do it for a few fights (which is why they are relegated to one-time villains / side characters) but the MC will fight a lot in those kind of manga.
Charles Cruz
Shut up and read more, fag.
Ian Diaz
>Do nips have something against unique abilities?
The MC´s you mentioned are all published in a shonen magazine. The broughter the appeal, the more popular, the more sales. If you want your MC´s to do something extraordinary, stop reading stuff that´s targeted at ordinary 14 year old boys.
Aiden Sanders
Shonen MCs are all meant to be unlikable little shits that have boring generic abilities. Seriously name me one shonen protagonist with a unique ability and is actually likable and isn't a faggot.
Liam Cooper
>kys Fuckoff newfag.
Evan Reed
yeah cause you are playing chess with your opponent
Ryan Robinson
>Naruto I haven't watch Naruto in years, I always thought his signature was that clone thing. I guess he does have that ball thing, but clone thing is his signature.
Jaxon Harris
>Do nips have something against unique abilities? I remember at least dozen of manga with really unique and creative abilities, wanna know what they have in common?
Oliver Hill
Saki - getting winning tile from the dead wall.
Matthew Mitchell
Not-Multiman's shadow clones are more unique and used more creatively than Not-Coilman.
Michael Richardson
Gon at least applies psychology to his attacks. Because of its power behind it and his small stature, he can use it as an effective psych-out when the opponent loses their nerve.
Everybody else as far as I've seen uses their special attack like the clincher to every single battle. There's no variation, no clever application, absolutely nothing.
Kevin Johnson
Narutos thing is multiplication, the rasengan is just a follow-up to that.
Cooper Evans
This is probably the right answer. If it was a niche ability it would get boring much faster, and with a generalist ability you can make the enemies abilities very niche and still have things be interesting.
JoJo definitely got things right in parts 4+ where they have the ability to punch things very hard as well as some very specific characteristics.
Kevin Murphy
>BnhA - Deku hits things very hard
not really, getting around or working with the side effects of his ability is what all his fights are about, thats why he works as a flawed hero among the best of his age.
Knock his personality all you like but his powers are implemented very well.
Jonathan Wilson
Op is absolutely right. Side characters tend to have the coolest abilities.
Carson Parker
>Gon at least applies psychology to his attacks
Cameron Perry
Mainly its so other characters can look good and the MC always has that punch move that rams through everything. It would be nice to see other moves in shoenen MC that isnt a basic power move.
Wyatt Carter
>no clever applic--
Michael Walker
Jojo ended up getting it right though
Alexander James
With full cowl he no longer breaks his arms.
Adrian Diaz
Ichigo's Bankai was such a flaming pile of dog shit. I remember the disapointment like it was yesterday.
>He risked his life to obtain this super technique that normally takes like 1000 years to learn. >He is now ... slightly faster or someshit. Also has a swastika on his sword.
Wyatt Mitchell
>telling lies on the internet
Chase Hernandez
>One piece - out of all the infinite Devill fruit possibilities Oda gives Luffy the ability to stretch. Which allows him to do stuff like this.
All DF powers are very basic things (strings, sand, ice, eye sight, gravity, soul stealing, mochi creation, etc.) that can be taken to the extreme based on how they're used.
Brody Jackson
JoJo's a bit unfair to compare since only Jotaro was given super strength for his story to help ease people into Stands. Jonathan had hamon powers, Joseph expanded on those powers with various tricks and traps, then all protagonists after Jotaro get versatile powers like life infusion, spin, healing, string unwinding, and bubbles.
Hunter Carter
Those made it worse because it meant the main group could get mangled and maimed every arc with little to no consequences. God Jojo is such shit.
Austin Long
I remember that pic from long ago. Good chuckles were had
Jason Rodriguez
How about psyren MC?
Hunter Gomez
>Protag gets the generic powers >everyone else in the franchise gets powers that need to be explained in shitzillion-page essays
David Kelly
Does anyone have the Black Clover gif edition of the OP pic? I lost mine.
Gabriel Gray
>Strawmanning
Camden Ross
Have you possibly considered there are shounen manga out there other than the ones that happen to be the most popular in the west at the moment? You should try reading them, or don't because they're shit.
Owen Edwards
>slightly faster or someshit user the difference is speed was like comparing a race car to the fastest jets being developed by the military. Yes it's just a speed buff but don't undermine it
Juan Sullivan
And then every subsequent enemy he fought was able to match his speed, rendering ichigo’s bankai worthless
Eli Williams
>it doesn't change the fact that Luffy's ability still boils down to "hit things very hard". You can literally boil down everything to a dumb sentence and you didn't even get it right.
Daniel Ward
Not in OP
>I ate the Ope Ope no Mi, I can manipulate anything within a range >proceeds to do crazy shit
Mason Gomez
Writing strategic fights is complicated. Shikamsru csn't be the MC because tst too much work. Just make Naruto change colors and get a new form and you are set for the next three months.
Sebastian Young
Somewhat unrelated, but when does FMA:Brotherhood get good? 9 episodes in and I don't get it. HxH had me already convinced that its a good show at that point, but that feeling is missing in FMA.
Benjamin Thomas
Younger kids have a hard time understanding complex powers, usually the MC has a very simple and easy to understand ability. When unique or complex powers are introduced, the MC is used as a reference point so they can better understand the scope of the power, MC punches things really hard, the enemy bends space as a shield.
Also its better to give the MC a power that is flexible, otherwise you run the risk of just running yourself into a corner.
Luis Diaz
Don't mind me just posting a shonen MC with an actually varied moveset.
Jeremiah Mitchell
I hate these fucking HxH fags so much can we just purge them? They are the Rick and Morty fans of anime.
So up their own ass its ridiculous.
Brandon Robinson
This. Oda chose the rubber fruit so he could be creative with Luffy's abilities.
Angel Miller
No, his arms are still fucked He's stuck using his legs
Kevin Allen
>I ate the Ope Ope no Mi >Now I'm an overpowered man.
Connor Parker
His arms are fine in Full Cowl, he just can't use them for 100% without a loli backpack.
Jaxson Kelly
Several major characters die in every part dumb nigger.
Nathaniel Watson
>jojo >little to no consequences Is this nigga serious?
Dominic Wilson
>and then they all came back to life in a universe where they had no problems and yet still became best friends happi enbing :DDD
Isaac Ramirez
>working with the side effects of his ability So just like Nardo and his wind rasengan, or Luffy with gear 2?
Brody Hernandez
Eyes of Heaven is even worst; it rewrote reality so that all the Jojos and all their friends lived.
Isaac Garcia
Try reading the goddamn series before you shitpost.
>m-muh Rick n' Morty
Dismissed
Cooper Morales
>came back to life
They're entirely different people. Jotaro, Jolyne, Anasui, etc..are all dead.
