Yu.
Hiro from Lunar 2.
Maxim from Lufia 2.
Also, pretty much any game with a silent protag, since they're completely blank and lack personality.
> the epitome of autism
Nepgear. She is a good girl

She has several mental illnesses.
Max, as far as I can recall
...
Is that a combat Dildo ?
>not edgy, one of the most simple and elegant designs
>no mental illness
>Was adopted by a disgraced war hero along with an older girl and lived a happy, active life (on top of befriending a rich kid) with them up until the actual events of the game
Yes
Not joking
Edge from FFIV
...
Max from Dark Cloud 2
...
Duran!
He's a friendly dude who loves adventure and helping those in need. 0% edge, baby.
Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey's protagonist.
Though after the events of the game, he probably has PTSD.
...
this guy and also almost all of the smt protagonist are normal people in a demonic invasion
...
Practically any Sega RPG characters are normal.
Well his mother does get killed in-game, but I'm not sure if that counts as a tragic backstory, seeing as it's something that happens over the events of the game.
...
All mother series characters but porky lucas and claus.
He has dad issues
...
Banner saga characters?
I'd say she has a tragic backstory and some slight mental iillness.
Been a LONG time though so I may be off-base but wasn't she orphaned/adopted by aunt/uncle?
The mental illnes is just her being her though.
:^)
...
Why Hiro but not Alex?
Vaan

She isnt retarded, just lazy as fuck
Dead brother. Try again friendo.
0% edge, 100% swag; Vyse drowns in pussy on his personal pirate island.
OP says:
>JRPG
tragic backstory with his brother getting killed
Yuna - the true protagonist of FFX.
Justin.
...
Mental illness because she actually finds Tidus hot. Try again, friendo.
In all seriousness, not mentally ill, just painfully stupid.
P5 MC
Strange Journey MC
Ness
I understand people being sick of edgelord/retard MCs, but what's wrong with a tragic past? Yeah it's a trope, but that doesn't automatically make it bad.
Plenty of normal people have bad shit in their pasts. As long as it doesn't make them turn into an unbearable faggot, who cares?
Pic related. Past is depressing as fuck, but not mentally ill or edgy.
Only in XIII-2 of course. He turns into a crazy edgelord in Lightning Returns.
Your pokemon character.
Well maybe not yours, but most normal people's...
>Guy with athletic swimmers body
>Not hot
It does wonders. Look at Michael Phelps. He has one of the goofiest faces on the planet, but it doesn't matter.
Demifiend?
He's just some random fucko who got played by Luci to hopefully do his shit, and in a world where angels and demons alike try to kill you, wanting to be the strongest fucker in the world really ain't being edgy at all.
FUCK forgot the pic.
test
>Yeah it's a trope, but that doesn't automatically make it bad.
The problem is that writers tend to use it to explain a character's current personality, and that's been done way too many times.
Didn't her dad have to sacrifice himself?
And then didn't she grow up being groomed to do the same?
What a bright, sunshiney childhood.
Hot... up until he opens his mouth... kinda like me.
>Plenty of normal people have bad shit in their pasts. As long as it doesn't make them turn into an unbearable faggot, who cares?
You forgot your pic, but assuming its FF related I agree with you. Particularly given that lots of JRPGs are set in fantasy medieval times, or at least times of war and the like with a significant mix of older stuff along with more modern, it'd be NORMAL for a lot of people to have lost parents, relatives, friends, villages, or whatever. IRL life expectancy didn't pass like 55 until the 1900s. Read up on what actual Europe was like during the warring centuries, or for that matter Japan during the unifications and warring states and such. We've romanticized it a lot in modern times but the fact was that it fucking sucked for much of the population. People mostly just dealt with it though.
Its too overused for me
Any time the some dude does something bad, it get play off as "PTSD of a Tragic Past"
Why can't someone be an asshole, just because he's an asshole ?
Like Tommy Vercetti ?
He usually just opens his mouth to insert weed or junk food.
>wanting to be the strongest fucker in the world really ain't being edgy at all.
Even then, he's just trying to fix things.
Lucifer is the real edgy one.
I meant Tidus, but still true.
And I also only open my mouth to put junk food and weed. :P
They can work when their normality and stability serves as a platform for other party members to evolve and change (and therefore become more interesting characters).
Yuri Lowell fits that bill, I think. He never really changed throughout the game, but always backed up the folks around him. Edgy, maybe, but not to any extreme degree.
this faggot from lost odyssey.
i dont remember him being anything but jappy bravo
Eh eh eh.... Nathan Drake, Mario, Crash Bandicoot, generic soldier in fps.
Man, he was surprisingly upbeat about wanting to change the future so hard he would stop existing
...
Why wouldn't you be. Life is full of joys but also sad moments. If you don't exist then there is nothing. You don't have to deal with anything.
...
Nah, I understood why he wasn't all that angsty about it, if everything went as he wanted he would stop existing but humanity would survive and maybe another version of him would be together with another version of his waifu, too bad his best friend managed to con literally everyone
jansen was so fucking good. I wish they'd port lost odyssey to pc instead of letting it rot away on 360.
...
Nobody else responded, but this is definitely true.
Jack Russel is just a cool, somewhat dorky, guy. No mental issues at all, no edginess, not tragedy except a dead dad. But who doesn't have a dead dad in these games?
Also just about any Dragon Quest protagonist. Though most of them are sort of black slates. But still.
...
>implying I play chinese games
...
Chrono Trigger
Suikoden (series, arguably discluding 3)
Grandia
Radiata Stories
I could continue, but I've embarrassed you enough.
Fair enough, though this might be a better example. Technically both of them have something of a tragic past, but they're still overall bright, determined, strong, and just plain a lot of fun. They don't blow off what went on in the past but it doesn't dominate them at all either, it just gives color to the present.
I replayed SCS recently and I'm actually still surprised how such an utterly simplistic game has held up. Characters are still endearing and it's still a fun ride.
