Why do we need them? What do they add to the industry? They're clearly out of touch with those they are supposed to inform
Do we still need game's journalists?
sounds like someone needs to git gud
Well he's not wrong. You can be shit at videogames and still have fun. However, if you're ruining everyone else's fun by being shit (dragging your team down, etc), you should fully expect people to be annoyed at you for ruining their fun.
Remember that fucking article about a guy who needed 5min per mob in BB or DaS3 and was claiming that game is bad because you need a "privilege of time" to play it?
This article would have instantly been considered satire 10 years ago.
If you are shit at games, play easy games or with other shitty players.
>You don't need to be good at games to enjoy them
Then why do reviewers complain so much about difficulty?
I'm not sure if they write this kind of stuff for hits or just to convince themselves that being shit at video games is okay.
It looks like part of the game journalists plot to throw away games like Sonic, a game in which you should "git gud" in favor of replacing it with something like "Last of Us" or "Life is Strange", two cinematic experiences about "muh feels"
Yeah, femhype. Funny thing about these kinds of articles is that they're oblivious to how privileged they actually are and of they want to be taken seriously as games journalists then they should be better than average.
>we should end a stupid meme falsely being used as an argument in internet discussions
I agree.
>you dont need to be good at games to enjoy them
This is clearly true as well.
What are you getting outraged about?
Are you saying that every person that plays video games only wants for video games that are difficult? Or, at least, that every person that plays videos games only wants for video games that require a certain mastery?
Op here, I wasn't really focusing on the lack of skill, I meant this more as another example of how shit game's journalists are. It probably would have been better to have used gamer gate as an example
Reminder this guy wrote an article about how bosses shouldn't be mandatory in games because he couldn't beat the first one in Hyper Light Drifter (and stopped playing because of it)
Game journalists is a profession that just needs to go the way of the dodo, but unfortunately it wont because there are too many dumb fucks on this planet.
He's not wrong desu. I'm not good at RTSs but I still enjoy them very much. The only time competency should really matter when evaluating a game is when you incompetence prevents you from making meaningful insight. Such as not being able to access content, or not being able to accurately comment on the state of balance.
>Let me review cars
>2/10
>This car was a manual, and I can't drive stick
>Skill shouldn't be required to review cars
Thank you. That's exactly what I was trying to say
Have games journalists always been shit at video games? If not, then where did the ones who could actually play video games go?
I think becoming a games journalist is like becoming a comic writer. You couldn't hack it at real journalism or writing, despite how low hanging those fruits are, so they go for the fruits that have already fallen off the tree and started to rot.
We are the minority now.
Normalfags and casuals won and took over. Now even my old ass grandma on her dead bed can play video games.
Well he's right, you don't need to be good to enjoy a game, however it will limit how much of a game you can actually play
Did we ever?
No, Video Game "Journalism" Is Over.
>Why do we need them?
We never did and never will.
Form your own opinion. Play a demo. If the game doesn't have a demo, pirate and buy if you like it.
It's pleasant looking a dumpster fire, even if the smell is bad.
Most of their traffic is hate clicks.
Their remaining sycophant twitter followers are aspiring gamejos themselves looking to take their jobs, OR game devs looking for free shills.
The pay is shit, and the perks have dried up.
Anyone that hasn't jumped shipped to PR in the industry proper is either under-qualified, retarded or both.
>Every game must be the same and pander to me
>But games should promote diversity
Thing is though, usually when you are playing with shitters it's because YOU need to git gud.
>gaming journalism
Just ignore it. JUST IGNORE IT.
If I had Godly influence I would command you sheeple to JUST IGNORE IT.
It's more about people not wanting every game to cater to shitters, every time a hard game comes out we get at least one article saying the game needs to be easier.
They can have fun however they want but they need to stop pushing their cinematic experiences as the best games that all other games need to be.
We don't need them. We don't need critics either.
We only need people to judge and figure shit out for themselves.
He's right, there are plenty of easy games that are a blast to play. I just finished Uncharted 4 and loved it.
But if a game is too much for you either git gud or play something else there is no reason for this shit.
>John Walker played Stellaris for 30 minutes and then quit because he couldn't handle tutorial popups
>he's also a cuck
who cares what he has to say?
>of late
>We totally didn't call out our friends for sucking at super mario bros
>just because I can't drive for shit doesn't mean I can't review cars
>just because I can't cook for shit doesn't mean I can't review cooking ingredients
>just because I can't play the guitar for shit doesn't mean I can't review cars
Video games are not music. You can't just write a bullshit review about how they make you "feel" and how interesting the it is that they only wear red, white, and black, and how you heard a rumor that they're brother and sister and married, ect. Video game consumers will call you out on that because, only music consumers, they actually care about their medium and don't just consume shit to look cool.
butts
>where did the ones who could actually play video games go?
PC Zone was ended in 2010, and by fucking Christ do I miss those magnificent bastards.
They took absolutely no shit from anyone, developer or publisher. 50% was seen as "dead centre", were consistently hilarious and they called it right down the line. Professional and funny.
Why did it have to die?
This is the faggot who wrote the article.
What do you expect from numale cuckolds? They're SJWs because they compensate for being unfuckable, uneducated trash. While neckbeards get autistic about their hobby, these faggots whine and simper about being more "open" and "progressive" because they're pussies. They want to attract women by being the safe, "nice guy" soft blob of a pussy, and get uppity when you laugh at them.
They don't want to git gud, because it's too hard for them.
I assume this piece is in defence of the whole Polygon thing because if so they aren't doing shit for fun IT'S THEIR FUCKING JOB YOU EXPECT PEOPLE TO BE AT LEAST SOMEWHAT COMPETENT AT THEIR FUCKING JOBS.
...
Op here, it's kinda hard to ignore it when they bully games from being released because of their "sexist" content
>they are people on Sup Forums who follow gaming journalists site
What is wrong with you people? Can't form your own opinion? You need to see some casual 30 years old nu-male playing on the easiest difilculty?
>Why do you need to study to become a doctor, everyone should have equal opportunities to get the job regardless of knowledge or experience shitlord
They dont want to spend time mastering a game, this is the age of instant gratification and political correctness, were you cant tell someone he's inept/bad because that hurts their feelings.
Now everyone should make an account or whatever and spam that retarded shit with "git gud"
Just sayin
Because he's not saying that, he's saying games should not require skill and that they should all be cinematic experiences from now on
link
> Cooking
> You don't need to be able to cook to enjoy food
> Microwave dishes and frozen oven pizzas are also enjoyable
Elitism is almost always better than the opposite. Striving to become better is the only way one can ever come close to fully appreciating what you are doing. Doing something half-assed will always be a lot worse.
Let's just make all games press f to win.
You indeed don't need to be good at games to enjoy it.
When you play games with friends, even if you lose or keep dying, you're still having a good time if the people you play with are really your friends. Relax, it's a toy.
>suck at games
>instead of getting good or playing another game, bitch on a glorified blog that's been hemorrhaging viewers for years
I agree with most of your points but you really need to proofread your posts
The point of the article is suggesting that games should progressively cater to less skilled players and offer less exclusive content to higher skilled players. Its not saying less skilled players don't enjoy games, its trying to suggest that they should remove harder difficulties and content that would normally only be accessible by good players.
>Elitism is almost always better than the opposite.
Yeah, for the small minority which belongs. For the whole community, its worse.
Could someone please translate this from Sup Forums to English?
>A really unpleasant gaming trend is getting louder and louder of late
What the FUCK.
OF LATE?
How old are you dude!
We were constantly shit talking each others lack of skills regarding certain games back in the day? Did you not go to an arcade growing up? Did you not have sleepovers? What about college could you not stop sucking dick long enough to pick up a controller?
Not really. "Git gud" is literally a meme. That it's replaced decent suggestions in any major manner is ludicrous.
>caring what Sensitive John Walker has to say
>ever
Minority you say. In my opinion we are what we always were. It's them who seek the money, attention and now "equality" in every possible field.
So now, we have "gamers" and people who actually play games. I would rather not mix those two groups.
Better a jackass than a failure.
Holy shit, that makes too much sense. They did the same for Megaman too.
How?
>louder and louder of late
it's been that way since arcades
that's why they had scoreboards
fucking idiots
I don't play westerncucks games so I give absolutely zero fuck. Japanese devs will never listen to what some cuckolds nu-males gaming site have to say.
Enjoy your cuck games.
Some are good, some are bad. It's like any other field of journalism. Its not like investigative journalism has been spectacular over the decade and a half. Do we really need sports journalists? Do we really need film and art critics? No, not really, but they do provide an opinion that, whether you like it or not, shapes some aspects of the field they are writing about, and sometimes other fields if the argument is more inclusive. They vocalize an opinion that has importance. Their importance is apparent solely because it comes from a consumer of the field. They don't need to represent any group of persons that plays video games. That's why you pick and chose between journalists that you share opinions and affinity of interests over those that don't share your like-minded interests
...
>you will never be so butthurt about opinions that you try to stop others from publishing their opinions while you yourself claim to like freespeech
What do you mean "how"?
For any X, if only 2% of people have access to it, its clearly not the best case for the whole community.
I don't hang around Sup Forums much, but I'm not the only one who thought "Last of Us" was dogshit, right?
>mfw terrible at almost every game I play
>still have fun
It took me 100 hours to pass Dark souls the first time I played it. I played most of it with around 10% health because Curse stack and I didn't have internet to update. I couldn't figure out how to heal curse.
...
>It's a toy
This is the mentality that's going to kill our hobby. Obviously videogames aren't the most important shit in the world but I'd really like to keep getting challenging shit like darkest dungeon, battle fleet gothic, xcom and even the new DOOM instead of everything being uncharted.
If you really don't care that's cool but in twenty years I don't want everything to be interactive movies so for now yelling at these numales that their opinion is shit is the most I can do.
is no one going to ask why the picture for this article is a wooden spoon?
>driving too fast is scary, why do manufacturers make cars that go above 60mph?
>tfw remember when RPS was good
>alec meer, jim rossignol, quintin smith (fuck you for that new vegas review though) and heck even john walker were all right
>alec barely does articles
>instead it's tons of freelancers there temporarily or alice o'connor/philippa warr doing buzzfeed style articles
This is what happens when the 20-something crowd who gave us great games journalism become middle aged wankstains. There's not enough new blood in the industry so we're stuck with this shit.
I agree. Too many retards here think if you aren't MLG pro or don't have asperations of being the best ever at a game, you shouldn't play them at all, as if games are for boosting your ego and not for fun and recreation
Sounds like somebody is bad at videogames.
>walker
what a surprise...
These people don't want games to be games anymore. They want a press F to skip gameplay section.
"We" don't need them, largely because we have the same access to promotional materials as they do and a luxury of time to evaluate them in an unprocessed format. Same way as people who are plugged into the movie industry don't have much to gain paying attention to shit rags like EW or TMZ.
However, the unwashed masses who don't have the time or inclination to sift through all the meaningless bullshit still need someone to inform them of what's happening in the gaming hobby. Until people stop following game journalism because it no longer informs them, it's not going anywhere anytime soon.
And let's not forget that as useless game journalism is, it still engages in SOME groundwork that can't be accomplished by watching Twitter feeds and reddit AMAs. They stage interviews, preview upcoming vidya, and yes, review games viewers don't want to commit to purchase without third party verification.
Really the only people they're out of touch with are the people who don't use them like us, which is kind of the point, isn't it?
...
Who else in here knows how it feels to git gud?
Games are crucial part of my life since I remember. Call me a loser or whatever, that's the truth and at least I admit it. It's hard to ignore something that fucks up with your more-than-hobby. Not that I care that much but it's pretty sad and sometimes irritating.
What the shit? Dark souls isn't that hard if you have to do shit over and over again till you think there is some conspiracy behind it you might be retarded.
It is a sony exclusive so... you can guess.
"git gud" is literally just 2010s-speak for calling someone a noob. basically the exact same sentiment. why do these carebears get so triggered.
There's not really much else to be said when the hundredth guy comes complaining about getting hit in Dark Souls or Monster Hunter. Just get better at dodging and timing your hits, i.e. git gud.
He's not wrong. I'm terrible at video games but I have fun playing me them. What's wrong is him writing about pointless shit.
Stellaris is kinda shallow and bad, though.
Because the author's parents beat him with a wooden spoon whenever his report card wasn't straight A's.
>There's no minor details or clues, etc
yes there is, though
I thought Sup Forums would be defending this guy since Sup Forums can't get good at Star Fox Zero
...
what a fag
He's right, sorry.
I don't agree with art criticism out of general principle as value is inherently subjective. However, videogaming is the one medium where I don't mind it, because there is often a trend towards consensus (not actual, objective consensus, just a trend) that allows for recommendations to be useful. That is, my experience could be like that of the reviewer's, unlike say, an album, or a painting, or a book. An unwieldy camera system is going to piss off a lot of people, chances are myself included.
That said, I think most journalists are shit. I don't say this to be a contrarian douche or swing my e-peen around, it's just that most reviewers kind of suck at games. That Polygon Doom fiasco is one in a sea of thousands. I'll watch a kart racing review and notice that the reviewer is always trailing in the mid pack. At the end of the day, how they feel about the game won't be too relevant to me, because I'm going to have an inherently different experience with the game than they do. The game will be less difficult for me to play. I don't really read reviews any more, but if I did, I'd try to keep an eye out for reviewers who were a lot like myself. Jeremy Parish used to be on 1Up.com and I'd listen to his opinion because he had a genuine, lifelong interest in gaming -- he'd mention importing Symphony of the Night as a kid to play on his PS1.
>dark soul
>hard
Loving this meme.
Yes, print game rags use to be awesome. But they never pretended to be anything more than a part of the fandom, or straight up marketing materials tied directly to the publishers.
Anytime a gamejo claims to be part of "the industry" I can't help but grip my sides as to what they're implying... It's an attempt to elevate their role but unknowingly they admit to being part of the marketing machine.
No film critic claims to be part of the film industry, what fucking lunacy.
>If you really don't care that's cool but in twenty years I don't want everything to be interactive movies
by "Toy" you understood all that?
>You don't need to be good at games to enjoy them
No, but you do if you claim to be some kind of authority on them.
>don't feel bad that you suck and do nothing to improve, in fact let's get rid of the idea that being competent is good
Losers and their tears...
Is this how fit people who've worked their ass off for it feel when fat people call them privileged?
retarded article, faggot needs to git gud and quit bitching when called out on being a shitter.
