So to get a Doom related discussion in that ISN'T about the new game, lets talk about this.
Was making the game literally entirely new a better idea? Was Nintendo in the right simply making the game its own thing rather than just make a halfway decent port of the original game.
I've never actually played Doom 64 but I've heard its not horrible, but its always been so strange to me they released a separate game, rather than just try port the original like everybody wanted at the time.
I remember enjoying it when I was like 15 but it's objectively worse than the original game and the monster redesigns were kind or retarded in retrospect.
Dominic Johnson
Doom 64 has a few flaws but overall it was really good. It's up there with the first two. Was it worth it to make a new one? I don't know. I'm not sure how much money was spent making that game or how much it made in return.
Adrian Cook
It was always a new game. They weren't even gonna call it Doom. Just 'The Absolution'.
But the Doom brand sells better, so in it went.
Mason Perry
Doom 64 is the best Doom game, so yeah, they made the right call.
Was it really Nintendo that made the call, though? I always just assumed the iD guys saw the good job Midway did on PS1 Doom and said "here, you guys give it a go."
Christian Rogers
Is this true?
Benjamin Gonzalez
Don't get me wrong, it was always a Doom game. Doomguy, same monsters, third in the trilogy story-wise.
They just didn't wanna use the Doom name for some reason.
Daniel Wood
Yes.
Years later some people made a PC port of Doom 64 as a WAD and pretty much all the source files mentioned Absolution to some degree.
It was probably something of a naming convention a la Plutonia Experiment/Evilution expacks for the first game.
Jose Perez
>garbage maps >less enemies than Doom 2 >2 frames of animation for everything
Why is this game like so much? Oh yeah, >muh atmosphere!
Connor Reed
The only thing I didn't like about Doom 64 was that they took away revenants Fucker's attack is still in the game along with the archviles

Based thirdworlder offers his opinion
Logan Lee
I suspect it was a memory issue to do with the homing rockets. Though to be honest after all the community wads its nice to have a break from the unrelenting revenant/archie spam.
Doom 64 wasn't good compared to the other games in the series. But, it was a good game considering it was a console game that wasn't a port of a pc game...in that regard, it was actually quite a good Doom.
Ian Carter
64 has the best level design in the series, and made some smart changes to enemy behavior to make them harder (the Cybie leading with his third shot, fir example). It's as good as, if not better than, the originals. Depends on how much you liked the new tone I guess.
Charles Powell
Hey gents, for someone who didn't grow up on DOOM, can I start from the first game and move on from there? Or are there definitive editions and such? Old/dated graphics don't matter.
Joshua Nelson
>Doom >game about heavy metal and fucking up monster at the speed of light >h-hey let's make a doom game for consoles with shitty ambient music, slow as fuck and not many enemies >NICE, LET'S ALSO REDO DOOM1 AND 2 SOUNDTRACK WITH AMBIENT SHIT AND RELEASE ON THE PS1 >64 has the best level design in the series Spotted the pleb
Isaac Parker
Sorry the levels were too difficult for you, user.
Robert Edwards
Yes. Just grab a source port like zdoom so you have proper controls. Just be sure to turn off jumping and vertical mouse look.
Jackson Myers
>the most lost souls out of any doom game >everything is too dark >too much keyhunting >best level design no. It was really good, but not the best
This is something a Nintenyearold or Brutal Doom babby would say.
Andrew Nelson
Most of the time it is just ambient
Jack Gray
What about Doomsday?
Sebastian Harris
It's a shame a Nintenyearold or Brutal Doom babby is better at video games than you.
Eli Gray
PS1 Doom is better. Doesn't have the shitty maps, has more enemies, and the same atmosphere.
Christian Martinez
The flesh laser is still my favorite weapon from any Doom game.
Christopher Lopez
Whatever helps you sleep at night, kid.
Luis Gutierrez
Doom 3 made me happy I remember there was a storm here and i played it in coop with some korean guy while i was swaddled in a blankey. Was so fucking cozy
Owen Morris
When DOOM actively tries for horror, it's fucking spooky.
i wish zandronum wasnt dead as shit. Theres still people playing but its all coop/survival. every now and again you can find a deathmatch server that isnt that dumb megaman shit.
Cooper Foster
This is cool, but what about Doom 3 mods?
Xavier Hughes
Why don't we have a deathmatch? Or at least tell people to join one to kill each other?
