Why do so many controllers use a criss cross button??
Why do so many controllers use a criss cross button??
Now that the dust has settled, can we all agree that the dualshock is perfect, and the standard for all controllers?
no
shit sticks lmao
No you dickhead
>the snes controller rip off is the standard for all controllers
Absolutely
imagine liking the gamecube controller. the buttons feel cheap as fuck
its simple and memorable
same as colours, letters and shape.
PS got it right because shapes and colours are universal where letters are not.
Because "ABC" and "XYZ" are the most recognizable strings of the alphabet.
For the playstation, specifically, O and X are synonymous for yes and no in Japan (and a pentagon button to continue the shapes pattern would be strange as well).
>criss cross
To make you jump, jump.
That's part of the charm. If you think they were crap you should see the ones they made for the wii u. They're even cheaper.
But they're not universal on controllers. X has a very different position on da than anywhere else.
Definitely
>shapes are universal where letters are not.
I didn't realize that letters weren't composed of line segments.
The fact that a Japanese company used the latin alphabet proves you're full of shit.
'cause inside out is wiggity wiggity wiggity whack.
B not being where A is on the SNES controller has always bothered me, even as a kid, just felt wrong
Sorta like triangle being used a lot for backing out in ps1 and ps2 days
>letters are not universal
>even though all the original letter-based controller designs were done by the Japanese, one of the few major languages which doesn't use the Latin alphabet
Really?
It irritates me to this day that Nintendo controllers have A to the right.
I guess if you're Japanese and used to reading text right to left there's some sense to it, but still
fuck yeah
Tied between 360 and One for me, I like the 360 triggers more but One has the superior dpad
Also
Dualshock1,2,3 >neo dual shock 3> 4
Maybe for console plebs
No
How would run and move the camera at the same time using a steam controller in a souls game?
No, the triggers are shit
>shapes and colours are universal where letters are not.
>Japan kept using circle to mean confirm and cross to cancel
>America kept doing the opposite
best controller reporting in
>playing souls
By mapping run to one of the extra buttons on the back.
>here's your controller, bro
there's a reason no one uses that piece of shit
i remember a lot of early ps2 games had triangle as cancel for some reason
the only good thing about the ds/ds2/ds3 were the face buttons. they feel even better than nintendo face buttons. everything else about the controller is pure shit, especially the d-pad, the joysticks and its pitifully small size.
Bind X/A/bottom button to right grip
Which you should be doing anyway, there's a reason modern action games don't put the dodge/roll/sprint on a face command anymore and it's because the player shouldn't HAVE to do a doofus claw-grip maneuver to execute such a timing-critical command by giving up camera control
who /duke/ here?
>tfw there's a QTE sequence when you're playing on Nintendo system
This thing just feels too awkward in the hand compared to other controllers.
I love the idea of it, but the overall design sucks.
Cool story here :
The placement of circle and cross were meant to mirror A and B on the SFC Controller. When brought over to the US, the American side of Sony wanted so badly to differentiate themselves from Nintendo that they mandated the switch for every hame they could, so that the button where B was would be select, and the one where A was would be cancel.
Now they just look like idiots.
Of the three I've used, they feel like they're made for tiny asian toddler hands.
What's the problem?
Once you get used to its ergonomics you can never go back to sticks, though.
I played TfD with it for like 2 months and later went back to Bayo and kept trying to jump by clicking the left stick. It's irritating as fuck not being able to jump with the same finger you use to move but you never realize it until you get into the SC.
>here's two touch pads to move and look
>instead of more buttons or a dpad, here's a stick because why the fuck not
your small time
+1
Dualshock 4 is a downgrade in my book. You have to grip it with your whole hand which sucks, and muh concave/vex hybrid analog sticks slip out from under my thumbs way worse than the old controller's sticks ever did
OP: learn the difference between a cross shape and the letter X for minimal plebbage
Button order is different
Can you use this with stuff outside of steam? Like emulators?
It's x. For execute.
The stick is shit, it was a late addition for worthless scrubs who couldn't move with the left pad like they were supposed to.
The left stick still makes a passable D-pad though. Not as good as the original 4-button design but still not terrible
Yeah pretty much
I loved this thing, wish some company would make a version of this but to work on ps4, Xbox one and PC.
No, it has been the same since the SNES, baring the Cube and N64 which had very clearly different shapes to their buttons.
Playstation kids are old enough to post here... sad times.
It can be used on any application launched through Steam, including non-Steam shortcuts like emulators.
Fuck off lovepon
Literally the greatest buyer's remorse in all my gaming life.
This controller is a piece of trash. Valve made it to be able to work like a mouse, as a result it's not the best device to play EITHER controller games or keyboard and mouse games.
Nintendo was always a secondary system to me and while Dualshock has it's own buttons, Xbox controller has the same ABXY but backwards. I've played SMW2 recently and there's an optional QTE sequence. I lost every time.
No one to blame but themselves, they wanted to try something new and then backpedaled, shows insecurity
Why do controllers still have the steering cross
It's good for menus
It's necessary for 2D games
I guess you only need one button to play a nintendo game but the memecube is still full retard.
Why has controller innovation stagnated Sup Forums? No one is willing to deviate from the dual shock/xbox design
>it works for all the games
Those games are designed for those controllers, no shit they work.
>It's necessary for 2D games
I wouldn't call it necessary at all. I play pretty much all 2d games with a joystick these days. Feels just as good as a d-pad ever did.
They're treated like 4 more buttons, outside of fighting games.
dpad existence is dependant solely on fighting games, otherwise it would have been turned into actual buttons by now, also it takes less space.
Because when Nintendo does it, everyone is shitting on it.
1-3? No. 4? It's passable. I like the tocuh pad more than a thought i would even if all games just use it as a big select button.
leave my d-pad alone
>That's part of the charm
Nintendo-fags are now defending shit as "part of the charm"
Ain't broke don't fix it
Nintendo hasn't caught on to this for years
It's a featureā¢
What improvement do you propose?
I used to think the GC controller was good until I picked up competitive Melee, Jesus Christ who thought up that awful button layout
It does make sense considering Nintendo is a japanese company. To modify it to be the opposite for EU/NA would just cause more headaches down the road adapting games
Hated the z button, c stick and the midget pad.
>not thinking the gamecube controller is GOAT
Stay pleb
So why didn't we stop with the nes controller then?
Dualshock: 2>4>1>3
Xbox: 360>One>S>DUKE
Nintendo: Snes>Pro WiiU>GC>Nes>N64>gamepad>wiimote
Sega: MD (6)> Multi> Saturn (jap)=satrun (usa)>MD (3)> MS>Dreamcast
Top 5: 360>2>Snes>MD (6)>gamecube
Something capable of playing Descent.
Corners
>What is a flightstick
My perfect controller:
>Gamecube joysticks
>Dual Shock 2 face buttons
>SNES d-pad
>360 ergonomics, bumpers and triggers
Yes.
Xbox controller switching the analog and D-Pad is stupid.
Xbox one has trigger rumble and ps4 has the touchpad, sensor and the useless speaker from the wii, third party controllers have buttons in the back of the controller
I don't see what more you could add to something that doesn't need that much change, better off just using m and keyboard if you want more buttons, k and m haven't evolved much either and those work flawlessly still
>Kriss Kross button makes you jump
Still leaves out several axis of control. You should be able to play it the same way you'd play an arena shooter.
>sticks on bottom
Lel no, sticks belong above other buttons.
Because it wasn't that good
Well, they were really trying to sell the mouse-trackpad concept more than anything.
The xbone controller is about as good as a controller can be
I'd like to clarify that by "Gamecube joysticks" I mean two of the primary gamecube joystick. throw that c-nipple shit in the trash.
>buttons on the strick control up down, left right, with stick movement controling yaw and pitch
I did this shit back in the 90's where were u at friendo
>Xbox controller switching the analog and D-Pad is stupid.
How to detect a newfriend sonygger.
That comes from being uneraged, I guess. Nintendo systems are the standard, as they came before Sony systems.
>tfw 360 is still king
Now select weapons, fire both primary and secondary fire, and use afterburner, all without having to move your hand.
Also you left out roll.
Once you get used to gyro fine aiming, left-pad move+jump and get settled into a set of bindings you like, it's better than KB/M for most PC games.
The only games I don't prefer it to KB/M for are games like Civ that play like fancy spreadsheets or MMOs with eleventy-billion commands.
So the Wii U pro contorller, but with zr and zl as analog triggers?
>stiff ass face buttons
>stupidly large deadzone
>worst dpad ever made
no thanks.
>not smooth curves
It's gonna be a bumpy ride, folks
I know realize i never played the game with roll.
I should replay those games some day.
Literally perfection
