Let's see, as far as I know game is not doing well in Japan and the western release is heavily censored. A game specifically designed to appeal to Jpop idols fans with chunks of that subculture removed for the sake of appeasing the ones who aren't going to buy it (or ship a bigger bill to Nintendo). Is not going to do well in the West at all.

I think you haven't played the game. This game is as much about idols as Persona 4 was about going being a high schooler.
It's just the basic setting that all gameplay mechanics are based on, but it's not relevant at all to the core mechanics.

Your characters learn new skills when they progress in their respective field (acting, singing, etc.) and the bad guys want to absorb that power from people.
In theory, but in practice it's just your usual forge new weapons from defeated enemies and master skills through combat and sidequests.
