More roguelikes?

FTL
Binding of Isaac
Rogue Legacy
Dark Souls
Enter the Dungeon

Those are "roguelike-likes" the real major roguelikes are ADOM, Angband, Crawl, Nethack and ToME.

OP should also consider smaller-scale roguelikes such as Infra Arcana, which is set in the world of H.P. Lovecraft's stories.

See the roguelike wiki for more details:

Mein nigger thanks, that's with I'm looking for

Also I don't know why I like these games, I can't pass floor 5, I guest loosing is part of the fun

I will give you some strategy hints if you want, what is your race/background, and how are you playing?

on /vg/ there is a thread called /rlg/ (roguelike generals) you can go check their posted pastebins in the archived thread here

Naga wanderer, just like a wanderer I play depending of the situation

Minotaur Warrior when I feel lazy

mfw I ascend on Nethack without using spoilers after years of suffering

>Naga wanderer, just like a wanderer I play depending of the situation

That's the hardest possible combo...LOL. Nagas are incredibly slow, wanderers have random equipment. If you must be a Naga at least choose Venom Mage background, Poison Magic will kill anything in the early floors except for undead, most of which are weak skeletons and zombies you can finish off with a weapon.

Teleport with a scroll or use other items if you face a Necrophage, or a skeleton/zombie of a dangerous being such as wyvern. Bear in mind skels and zombs can't use equipment or their base beings special abilities.

Venom Mage or Berserker.

I really recommend Tales of Maj'eyal (TOME). It strikes a good balance of being able to see progress and not being piss easy or anything. My only real criticism is that isn't a little mouse heavy, which sounds like a positive at first but isn't really if you play a lot.

Still, I highly recommend.

How deep is the Orb of Zot and what would you do with it?

ASCEND!

Eat it

mountain dwarves back yet?

Silly user, crawl devs don't add things they just remove stuff.
Although did just add 2 gods, jojo and dbz aka pshh nothing personnel

Orb of Zot is in Zot: 5, which is the 25th floor of the dungeon overall after depths and normal D. You use it as a paper weight.

Don't forget 2pak.

I was mad until the inclusion of Dark Souls.

Nice b8

I could never beat this game, even with troll berzerker (ez mode class) , i always got fucked by bees

I have to second ToME. It's really, really good.

If you wanna start on a super fun EZ mode I recommend alchemist.

Crawl has become a lot easier over the years.
Give it another try.

Cataclysm DDA is pretty cool, albeit not a true roguelike.

Caves of Qud was great and is apparently actually getting finished and added to steam.

Among the classics adom is my favorite, though.

But this is wrong. Crawl has been getting harder over the years.

With the last two versions, no.

>i always got fucked by bees

You probably suffered from greed - the reluctance to spend resources. You could have used a Blink scroll to get to corridor, then use Trog's Hand for regeneration (counteract ongoing poison damage), Brothers in Arms (summon ally), and Berserk. If you want to play it safe, kill some of the bees without using Berserk (which blocks use of items and abilities), then use a scroll of Teleport or Fear to escape and heal.

I really want to get into roguelikes, but ASCII really puts me off... What's the best looking good roguelikes out there?

crawl and doomrl are without a doubt the best roguelikes with pretty tiles
people will probably tell you to play tome4 but the tiles are dogshit hideous and it's a terrible game

The biggest problem with bees is their penchant for catching you out in the open and poisoning your shit. He can probably deal with them with just trog's hand if he finds a proper corridor. You don't ever want to use blink/tele/fear to facilitate fighting things. If a situation is bad enough to tele/blink/fear away, its a situation you don't want to be in ever.

Crawl has really great tiles. Adom has decent tiles, outside of some really glaring stuff. Cataclysm DDA has decent tiles. Tome has really bad tiles. Dredmor has ok tiles. Please spoiler future images of vulture. Nobody should have to see that shit.

>it's a you die in a Ziggurat despite the fact you could easily have stolen the orb and beaten the game episode
Every time, fuck mummy floors

Thank you lads, I guess I'll give Crawl a shot since it seems to be all around the best regarded rl.

>The biggest problem with bees is their penchant for catching you out in the open and poisoning your shit
>He can probably deal with them with just trog's hand if he finds a proper corridor.

Hence blinking to a corridor. And obviously I meant use Fear/Teleport if necessary, not that he should definitely plan on using them. It's moot anyway, as a Troglodyte with +30% HP (size) double regeneration and a +2/+6 weapon (claws) shouldn't have problems with bees unless they are before Floor 5.

Don't be afraid to check out /rlg/ if you want help.

You blink to get away from really dangerous stuff user. They're really rare emergency buttons and you don't want to burn them just to fight some bees. This whole thing is kind of moot though, since its a hypothetical.

You can always try DoomRL. It mixes really well the concept of DOOM with the gameplay of a roguelike.

Why would you melee in arena, especially against barons of hell?
There's no reason not to cornershoot with shotguns. Everyone can cornershoot with shotguns regardless of builds, and it's even important to do so easrly game.
I am confus.

And then I realized that's probably angel of berserk.

Angel of Berserk.

If you're a weeb shit Elona+ is great. Every player gets a free little girl to fondle.

Delicious 2pac aka wizard of wands aka why is nemelex still in the game

What does jojo god do?

Any new races?

ToME is a much better game, but its artstyle is a little odd so you may not like it as much.

That's hardcore. It took me like a year of on-and-off playing even with spoilers. It was my first roguelike though.

It's definitely the best entry for someone new to roguelikes. It has a lot of convenient little features that detract from autistic labor of playing roguelikes.

Just remember one thing, you don't have to fight everyone you see, retreating is viable and completely encouraged.

FOREVER THUGGIN' ON THE QUEST FOR THE ORB
ZAPPIN ENEMIES SINCE THE START OF THIS SEED
I'M UNDER PRESSURE, THE STRESS WITH HAVE ME EVOKIN'

Literally gives you a stand.

I tried to get into ToME but just couldn't. The graphics are weird and I didn't understand how to gear my character and stuff.

Does it have a goal or is it more like a sandbox roguelike?

It's a grindy sandbox roguelike, but it does have a main quest line.

There's a main story to progress through, but the third part is still in development.

>promised myself I'll only play one roguelike at a time
>told myself I'll only move on to the next roguelike after beating it at least once
>nethack as my second roguelike

God damn this shit is hard.

When you pray at his altar, he throws you an arrow. If you survive, a 「Stand」 appears at your side. You choose the stats and the ability.

This is not a joke right? Re-downloading right fucking now.

That nigga might be exaggerating it, but you basically get a friendly phantim that follows your every order. Can be a Fighter, a Caster or a Hexer.

jojo god just gives you an ancestor
a ghosty dude that follows you around and respawns shortly after being killed
piety increases by exploration
eventually you can turn ghosty ancestor dude into either a knight, hexer, or battlemage (battlemage has terrible AI)

eventually ancestor upgrades more and more and you have to make more choices
like broad axe or demon trident for knight

it's p cool
not that great of a god
but it's cool

pastebin.com/yfUKx35f
/rlg/ is one of the few decent generals mostly free of shitposting.

For anyone unaware, you can get the Dragonslayer sword (from the Berserk manga) by completing it's level without taking damage.

any good roguelikes like cataclysm, but with a different theme maybe? not like unreal world, but maybe a fallout or mad max theme

don't the dragonslayer and berserker armor also just randomly spawn?
or is that specifically one of the requirements to be able to equip it?

how do you do melee arena without taking damage? that sounds impossible

So that was the secret to guaranteedly respawn it? Nice.

Now it's the time when the thread gets closed and erased from the archives.

I recommend ELONA.

The main story for the most part has been translated in the custom edition. You also have add-on stories in ELONA + and Custom.

If you wait another never ever year you can get it's successor game ELIN.

IE is better than VM.

>Dark Souls
You have to be more subtle.

>how do you do melee arena without taking damage? that sounds impossible

it's not in the arena. You need a 100% kill rate, and to be playing on HMP, and to take no damage during the UC level. If you only fulfil the first 2 requirements you get Azrael's Scythe, otherwise you get The Spear of Longinus.

doom.chaosforge.org/wiki/Unholy_Cathedral

>IE is better than VM.

0 Aptitude vs 3, and Ozocubu's Armour increases movement delay by 1, so why on earth would you choose it as a Naga?

IE is the strongest mage start. VM is generally considered the weakest along with AE.

Oh damn, thought they would also start with a randomly generated special ability. Still cool.

IE spells are much better, also you ideally cast Ozo in situations where movement speed does not matter.

VM is commonly considered to be pretty weak, though I do like it. But I also like Nagas, and they suck!

Not him but I tend to enjoy playing as a monk, any viable race.

Wizard background for Naga then, a range of spells, including mephitic Cloud.

Wait just a minute... You mean, completing The Unholy Cathedral without taking damage? Nigga, that sounds utterly impossible. I don't think even with an incincibility globe you'd be able to do this.

And nuking doesn't count.

I don't like Wizards at all. Frost is a much better book, anyway.

>IE is the strongest mage start

That's a weird way to spell FE.

But yeah, AE is shit.

Wiz is tons of fun and really good for naga. They have inherent immunity to their own meph clouds, and blink does much more for a naga than any other race. You're going to be poison spitting WAY more than usual though. I think NaTM is a really great start for them though. Nagas are best when they're abusing their huge HP and constriction.

I tried playing ADOM but it felt really underwhelming to me. I like the general idea of a somewhat open-world roguelike but it felt way too easy and like most of the non-combat skills were superfluous. Also it felt like the enemy design was focused way more on quantity than differentiation. Did I pick up a bad version or something?

I've never played ADOM, but from what I've seen of other people posting their playthroughs, it tends to turn into degenerate grinding and spoilerly shit. If you aren't into that kind of thing, try out another game.

Trolls are very powerful, and because of this power can succeed with many Gods,

Non-troll monks are generally weaker than weapon-wielders, at least to begin with, for example Demonspawn will eventually develop powerful mutations, and have a high Invocations for god powers, but are hard in the beginning because of their poor Aptitudes. They may or may not develop claws like a troll, greatly boosting their unarmed damage, but if they do it will probably take many levels.

Transmuters can transform themselves to boost unarmed, but they are also weak to begin with due to splitting XP between magic and melee.

Is this true? Might try again.

Anything notable removed in 0.17-0.19?

Why do they call him 2pac?

Why is no one recommending PosChengband?
It's a glorious clusterfuck like no other.
Also, in what other game can you play as a ring of power?

God's name is Pakellas.
He's all about wands/rods, which are really just fantasy guns if you think about it.
We like giving gods nicknames too.
2pak

Makes sense.

Might try a Transmuter or something with him.

His real name is Pakellas. We just have an odd sense of humor and call him 2Pak. We do it for basically every other god too.

>It may invoke mana storms, touch of doom or fire a rocket. It may summon cyber demons, summon uniques or summon dragons. It may touch to drain charges.
Poscheng, i hate u so much but the loot game ridiculous.

But it's really easy to figure out what stats are important, all things considered. Where it falls down for new players is knowing the order of dungeons and every death coming at being stunlocked to death (being pinned, usually). Still, stats are really straightforward. In fact, hovering over them tells you what they are/do. The character sheet is fairly robust.

DWARF FORTRESS ADVENTURE MODE.

No more Amulets of Resist Mutation or Clarity.

Enjoy Abyss and Pandemonium.

>no more Resist Mutation
what the fuck

How am I expected to deal with Orbs of Fire or Wretched Stars?

Well, considering it never worked against transient muts (the kind wretched stars give), you'll probably manage.

Chugging the extra 2 cure mutation potions they give you to compensate it.
By the way, they cure less mutations now.

Enjoy Slime Pits.

cutemut is supposed to be more common now
alternatively play halflings

>Caves of Qud
>implying it'll get finished
>giving goons money

>How am I expected to deal with Orbs of Fire or Wretched Stars?
With your INTERESTING AND TACTICAL DECISIONS. Amulets are boring nobrainers and swapping jewelry is scummy.

Oops, don't I feel stupid.

Interesting change, though.

Dungeons of Dreadmor
Caves of Qud boyeeee
also NEO Scavenger might be considered a roguelike. The rest I'd eecommend are obvious as hell and all over the thread.

This makes me really want to play UO again but I don't want to grind a year to max out skills.

It really isn't a big deal. The number of purple tier 3 mutating demons (neqowhatever) was lowered and pots of cmut are more common. When you are fighting oofs you are in Zot and about to win so most muts matter not.

>Dungeons of Dreadmor
no
nonono

Nigga, they remove 3 just like they always did.

Cmut is much more common. You'll have 3-5 cmuts by the time you hit zot. They also made nexokeks much less common so you don't have to tread as lightly. You mostly get mutated by OoF in a normal game, or cacodemons/nexokeks/Mnoleg in extended.

>make god of wands
>remove half the existing wands from the game

So what are your best characters/most memorable victories?

I'm only a babby to the genre and have only two 3-runes victory under the belt, even tho I managed to get them in a streak, I have no clue how.

TrMo of Oka with high throwing is turbo diesel: the experience, would recommend to everyone.

The second victory was with a conjurer, but I cried blood against the 6 orb of fire I had to fight on zot:5. How the fuck are you even supposed to fight them if you didn't train earth magic all game and rely on fire storms? I had to pray that my orb of destruction always get their target and had to quaff 5 cure muts.

At least they kept the wand of healing. A Deep Dwarf of 2pac is basically a free win.

I could never get into Elona, i dunno if is harder than crawl but i always get my shit rekt in elona and maybe i was doing something wrong but leveling seemed slow. Any tips aside from git gud?

Are you really that guy who played the Fe of Qaz? I remember watching you, it's cool that you won twice already. Grats.

Vs. oofs, Firestorm could be good if it's high-powered (needs high Int, staff of fire, maybe ring of fire or robe of Archmagi). Ood is a good choice too, and well, even a mage can melee sometimes.

So is a DD of Makhleb, just with less keypresses.

I'm not really that skillful yet on these types of games, but Dwarf Fortress is the game I want to try once I feel experienced enough, Dwarf Fortress looks like the final boss of the Rouge-like games, feel free to say if I'm wrong
