I remember years ago when the dev was posting his progress on the dwarffortress forums. He was going to make it a free game and people convinced him to sell it :(
>convinced him to sell it
Heil Capitalism
Mein Fuhrer Obama
dank shitpost
Has there been a single one where the dev didnt get bored halfway through and either stop working on it or slow down updates immensely?
The genre is cursed, it requires a certain level of high autisim ambitious gamedev fags simply dont have
Shameless turds that try to cash in on DF complexity while, ironically, dumbing it down for casuals.
Except that casuals don't want games like that, since it requires to not have a kid's attention span.
DF is a niche game for a reason.
is rimworld good
too fucking expensive
should be $10 max
Fucking this
>Pay $30 to test my game that I'm going to put on early access in the future for just as much
toady
this looks 100% like prison architect
is it the same engine ?
even shameless ripoffs like gnomoria are nowhere near as expensive as rimworld
>$30
you're joking
Well duh we're talking about df-likes, not df
No, the guy making it is just a shitty artist and "borrowed" PA's artstyle.
>borrowed
everytime
...
for
How advanced is rimworld's world generation compared to dorf fort?
Poor. Considering it lacks the amount and diversity of biomes Df has. Also a only a single plane, no z levels.
I bought it around alpha 7 or so. Always share the extra downloads with friends who enjoy it. It's the go to pick up and play for a while game. Building a fortress against tribals or a peaceful farming community never fails to relax me.
Is there anything it has of df?
>people paying 30 ding dong dollary doos
>for a product that will likely never be finished
>when DF is already more finished and free
it's like gnomoria all over again
why do people do this to themselves
gnomoria wasn't finished?
why am i not surprised
>Game isn't even out of alpha yet
They released the full version a few months ago, but it was missing a ton of promised features and buggy as fuck.
Needless to say, they haven't addressed any of the problems in that time and people are less than happy.
Because the gameplay concept of DF appeals to a sizeable group of people who can't be arsed to master it's UI.
>missing a ton of promised features
what were they?
There are tilesets that make the game as normie as possible, I don't understand how df isn't more popular.
Most people think it's some hardcore game that only people who can understand binary code can play.
Originally all the people looked like PA too but then they changed them into shitty looking Glukkons
>binary code
my problem with the game was there not being a clear set of things for you to accomplish. Not that I need an objective, but I generally just had no idea what the fuck I was doing.
>there not being a clear set of things for you to accomplish
What part of STRIKE THE EARTH do you not fucking understand
Fine, user, your berating has convinced me. I'm going to download the most normie tileset and give this game another go
I hate games that are priced based on what the creator THINKS it will be like once it's even half-finished
>buy my barebones proof of concept for only 40 dollars, i promise it will be like crysis mixed with dorf fort and skyrim when it's done
>baww my game is pirated so much i quit fuck the internet
The tilesets make the world graphics readable but don't change the actual UI. If studying a wiki is required to figure out how to do even the simplest of actions, only a tiny fraction of people who try it will stay around.
I kind of thought it felt like the supposed 1.0 release had very little new added since i played 2 years ago or so
game is good for making pretty looking isometric towns and forts but that's about all I can get out of it enjoyment wise.
And I either don't understand job assignments or they're annoying as fuck to manage
I'd offer advice on how to best learn the game but i'm so balls deep into plugins and mods that i don't even remember how i learned to play vanilla dorf originally
Speaking of Nomie tilesets. Can one of you fine gents finally get me off my ass and link me to a good one so I can play some dorf?
Sorry for being a faggot casual, but I'm slowly getting better.
dwarffortresswiki.org
They're all here
So what is the best DF casual alternative?
i like phoebus for fort mode
> If studying a wiki is required to figure out how to do even the simplest of actions, only a tiny fraction of people who try it will stay around
Like Minecraft when it first came out?
Yeah but in minecraft you control 1 character instead of guiding a bunch, and there's no semblance of urgency to do things.
Thanks. Will check out and try to get back into it.
Why does everyone complain about the UI in Dwarf fortress? I only recently started playing and the UI is very easy to navigate and is pretty self-explanatory.
people who get it: this guy
Literally everyone says you can only play if you have autism or take weeks to learn the game.
None of them are ever even close to Dwarf Fortress...
Go to the wiki and look up a tutorial. It will give a basic understanding of making a fort
It's what you'd get if the island of Manhattan had been gameplay and depth and the beads were trivial UI and graphical improvements.
The UI is total garbage, I mean really? Why not make it mouse combatile? I don't even care for the graphics, I find them quite charming actually
why go for silver?
No, Minecraft was about secret knowledge, such as crafting recipes, resource gathering and interaction between blocks and mobs.
The actual interactions with the game were straight forward: movement, mining blocks, placing blocks, inventory management and crafting.
DF biggest hindrance is for the player to learn how to do basic actions, from navigating the world, creating a stockpile, digging a tunnel to assigning jobs.
Rimworld, Gnomeria and all the other DFalikes may not even have a tenth of DF content and mechanics, but they have UIs people can understand within minutes from top to bottom.
WHAT
IS
the
BEST
CASUAL (little brother)
ALTERNATIVE to DF?
Already modded minecraft beyond hell and back, but it was too complex for him every time.
I just started a friend with DF recently, the problem is there is too much on some menus and other menus dont explain exactly whats going on in them.
Designations is pretty self explanatory but it takes so long for people to understand that every actual command takes at least one or two menus to get to and it can get confusing that you can't build waterwheels in the build menu its in the build machine menu
is your little brother retarded? because minecraft is designed for children
Toady has a philosophy of, "Add in the autism now, clean up the graphics and UI later."
Your best bet of a decent UI is waiting for DFhack.
fallout 4 settlement building
Probably Rimworld.
Just have him test it vanilla before commiting to any mods.
Yes but it's been 14 years, 10 if you only count the time devolopment been consistent...
The final modded mc took about 20 minutes to load into the main menu and about 5minutes to load a world, ran at ~30FPS and crashed regularly, it was easily rivaling DF in content and complexity, when you don't know the mods and what to do.
>that map isnt a perfect mirror image
jesus fuck. nigga drew both sides.
It's a good game. Is updated fairly regularly and has a large modding community.
>I'm a moron
I'm guessing your brother is as well
It's one autist and his brother trying to make a Tolkien simulator. I'm surprised he even got this far.
maybe rivaling DF in complexity and content if you ignore the entirety of legends mode and fortress mode
>convinced him to sell it
>when DF is free
Well Oh Fucking Kay then. But why?
Ye I guess, but I just think that if the UI was improved more people would actually play the game and more money would trickle in, giving them ability to focus more on cramming more shit in. 'Cause now DF is only like this meme super hard game that most nerds have heard about but never played.
is the lazy newb pack worth starting with, or should I go straight for masterwork or something?
>Should I start with the package that allows beginners to easily edit the games options and use tilesets or should I install the mod that has more bloat than a Bethesda game?
I hope you like getting a trojan.
and weather, and temperature, and fluid dynamics, and cultural dynamics, etc
There are mods for mouse support, but selecting stuff with keys is just much more convenient. The real issue with DF UI is how unorganized it is, I can never quite get how to access the screen to change the enabled jobs for a dwarf
Dorf
>press all the keyboard buttons
>eventually you'll figure out which one does the action you want
Minecraft
>put every material in every possible configuration in a 9x9 grid
>eventually you'll get all the crafting recipes
i'd like to see anyone on this planet figure out the recipe for even an anvil without any prior knowledge
Yes, I'm arguing minecraft is worse (on PC at least) than dorf fort for requiring a wiki
pretty sure job management is the absolute worst part of vanilla dorf, hence dwarf therapist and autolabor being so prevalent. It's not a 'it's hard' thing, it's a 'it takes so fucking long to change one thing' thing
if you think that's bad, try knapping in TerraFirmaCraft. it's a 6x6 or 8x8 grid where you ONLY remove rock material and if you think the shape you made is ok, then you "craft" otherwise the material is lost forever.
>make it streamlined and accessible so more people will pay money
CASUALS GET OUT
yeah i now wait for dfhack to come out so i can have the in-game therapist. it's an absolute nightmare managing labors otherwise. I can't go back to managing large forts without it.
Yeah, that's what I'm saying, that the UI for labor and military are unorganized, broken and generally a fucking chore to use without DFhack
>he does not use ASCII
casuals need to develop some autism desu
Curses is ugly
>he thinks DF uses ASCII
But it does.
Only if you are on Linux and enable it in the ini, otherwise it's always tiles
I'm sure if you use LazyNewbPack or something. I see alot of people use ASCII tilesets in /dfg/
To outright meme arrow like that, you're just shitposting.
It looks like ASCII but it's not ASCII you mong, it's a tileset that looks like ASCII, but it's just a bitmap instead of proper text output
it's a tileset. when it does that thing loading up a world where it shows all the tiles, it's loading the ascii tileset.
styled on
"Doom isn't 3D!"
I don't know about Doom, but I'm sure DF isn't ASCII on Windows
It's not
read "masters of doom"
there is no 3D aiming or movement in doom. the PC and NPCs may move up stairs or fly, but that doesn't affect gameplay at all. shooting "below" them or "above" them still hits them.
in that sense, DOOM is 2D, as the field of play is compressed into 2 dimensions, despite looking like 3
So basically your "fully modded" mc was shit because you didn't allocate ram properly.
Also
>easily rivaling DF in content and complexity, when you don't know what DF is
fixed
>How dare people not play the game the way I play it.
smexy :3
Exactly.
...
>2 ghosts
>indescriminate stockpile
>cage traps
>1 story
>no evidence of a roof
