The pyramid heads represented the protag's want for punishment. After he buried his guilt over what he did, they're had no reason to keep living.
It looks off without film grain.
But why are there two PHs? Single PH could have served the exact same purpose.
And then you find two eggs on them, one is 'fresh', the other is 'rusty'.
Also, why was there a need to fight them? Once James overcame his guilt, shouldn't they have just... walked away?..
James is too strong the only escape is death
One is the guilt of killing Mary, the other is the guilt of letting Maria get killed.
One is 'fresher' in his mind, the other is an older memory.
Just wanted to post in this thread to say that I love how this game still talked about. It's still being interpereted in different ways, and it's still being loved. RIP Silent Hill.
Nice, didn't think about that.
Yeah, I wish Sup Forums talked Silent Hill more often.
There's very little to do in SH threads anymore, besides answer newbies' questions.
Glad to see that new players keep finding this series after all these years, and actually enjoy it.
Anyway, if there's some potential newcomers lurking ITT, thinking of getting into the SH series, you can get and play the original four titles on PC, for free. Follow this guide, and get the games from these DL links:

SH2 DDL:

Mount the ISOs of 2 & 3, and then run their installers like always.
The SH1 is a PS1 rip that you gotta emulate.
The "sh2proxy" fix works as a no-cd crack as well, and is included in the pack.
In case you experience issues saving the game / not being able to edit the disp.ini, make sure the files aren't set to "Read Only", and run the game as Administrator.
If SH2 gets stuck in a black screen upon launch, close it and re-start it again.
>Yeah, I wish Sup Forums talked Silent Hill more often.
more than almost daily, like the tend to do?
I visit Sup Forums every day and I almost never see SH threads.
Already downloaded the entire series, but thanks anyway, maybe someone else will make use of this.
I always heard that one was supposed to be more brown, representing old dried blood, and the other was supposed to be red, representing fresh blood. But they both look brown here. Are my eyes just fucked up or was that always some fan bullshit, like some THAT KID rumor?
It's hard to say. The one on the left does seem a little more 'red', but that just might be the lighting.
SH gets brought up actively in most horror-game and Konami threads, and even gets its own thread at least once a week or so.
I've personally put up color-filters to the Catalog to highlight my favorite game topics, SH being one of them.
Still, glad to see rookies enjoy the series. Hope you've been going through them in release order, and either are, or will do replays later on. Especially SH3 really requires deeper knowledge of SH1 to "open up" properly.
been an active fan since SH1 came out, and I've never heard that theory before.
There was this fairly nicely fitting one about the 2nd PH appearing once James offs Eddie, though. The rusty and clean eggs are pretty obvious references though.
>Hope you've been going through them in release order, and either are, or will do replays later on.
I'm playing SH2 -> SH -> SH3 -> SH4 -> the rest.
I might replay them some time in the future, sure. SH2 had the sort of atmosphere you start longing for after a while, although I doubt the secondary experience will be as amazing.
>although I doubt the secondary experience will be as amazing.
considering you can not only change the difficulty levels and thus get totally different sort of gameplay experiences, the 6 very different endings should also keep you interested of going back.
I'm still more of a SH1 guy myself, but I love 2 to bits as well. I've literally played SH2 some good ~30 times by now, on 4 different platforms, and I still get the itch to go back to it from time to time, and occasionally even read or find something I'd not known before.
Same thing with SH1, which I've scanned through a biiit more extremely, with some 40-or-so playthroughs, last time couple months ago. It's just amazing game.
This is false actually. The other was the guilt of killing Eddie (he killed another human being) although by the time he killed Eddie he was still repressing Mary's death.
So the two PH are for the two people he killed since he felt guilt for both of their deaths. The fresh egg represents his new kill while the rusty one is the old kill.
I believe this interpretation is as viable as the other, if not less. After all, James showed regret only for a few seconds after killing Eddy, but spent a minute-long cutscene siting on the floor of a slowly moving elevator, sad and depressed as fuck after PH stabbed Maria. And guilt over doppelganger women being represented by doppelganger PHs is just poetic in general. Not to mention the fact that James killed Eddy in self-defense, while Mary and Maria were innocent victims.
>I've personally put up color-filters to the Catalog to highlight my favorite game topics, SH being one of them.
Can you do this with Sup Forums X?
>James showed regret only for a few seconds after killing Eddy, but spent a minute-long cutscene siting on the floor of a slowly moving elevator, sad and depressed as fuck after PH stabbed Maria.
No fa'm you didn't get it. James actually thought Maria was still alive during that cutscene. He says "STOOOP" because a part of him thought she was still somehow alive. Only once PH poked her again did he start to realize that he needs to stop repressing his guilt. The two PH represent who he killed. When they killed Maria again (remember he thought that somehow she was still really alive and actually a person even though he saw her die twice) it was only then did he finally start to realize why he felt guilty. Do not downplay the importance of his guilt over killing Eddie. Didn't matter if it was in self defense. He didn't kill him feel guilty for a minute and then said lol I'm okay now.
No offense but you are downplaying that way too much when you say that.
And furthermore, assuming you get Maria as the final boss depending on how you play, he addresses his issues with her at the final boss. If it's what you said then Maria couldn't possibly be the final boss of the game.
>Maria?
>but I don't need you anymore
Not the exact quote but that's what he tells the final boss at the end. So he feels guilt over all three until that cutscene where they kill her for the third time. That scene makes him realize that Maria was his own manifestation. So when he says he finally gets it now he is ready to address his issue head on after the two PH fight. There is no true canon ending for SH2 but it has been said that if there is then the devs would assume it's the in water one. So Maria likely is the true final boss.
My favorite ending is actually when he leaves with Maria just to let you know
Alright, you make some good and interesting points. I may have misspoken before.
Do you have any insights on why the hotel transformed thrice during the game? At first it is just a normal, albeit abandoned hotel. After James watches the tape, the hotel seems drenched in water, it's dripping in every corridor, almost as if the hotel was submerged under water and pulled out. And then after the twin PH fight, the hotel seems burned down and partially demolished, while it was raining outside and on the roof where the final battle took place. What was the significance of these changes?
Well to be fair the game is very vague on purpose. I actually didn't fully comprehend it in my first playthrough. In fact I didn't even realize that the corpses around the town were wearing James jacket. Nor did I realize the guy who gets killed in the apartment is James himself. It's definitely a very strange game.
Water is a common theme with SH2. Another common theme with SH2 is James keeping things tightly under wraps (think the otherworld hospital).
There's this user on /r9k/ that is pretty passionate about the game and can explain some of these questions much better than I can. You should check him out.
Thanks, I will check this out.
But now it's time for me to go to bed. I hope we'll have another SH thread some time soon.
Bye.
It's possible that James "Otherworld" is actually the clean, pristine versions of the environments, while the ruined versions are the 'real" ones. The nice Hotel could be the otherworld, the broken down one the "real" version, and after killing pyramid head he goes into a more nightmarish version of the hotel.
this
/thread over
why shouldn't there be as many PHs James wants there to be?
The eggs represent Mary and Maria, one is old blood the other is fresh blood (which he is about to kill - see Maria ending)
when it comes to the hotel, the flooded one is most likely the real one - but that version also has a ballscrazy stairways which he does the final confrontation on.
Could change into a worse version of the otherworld after Pyramid head leaves, so to speak?
the second pyramid head represents his guilt for killing Eddy. There was no second pyramid head before he did... also both Pyramid heads are holding eggs after they kill themselves. A rust-colored egg, representing old blood and a scarlet-colored egg representing new blood.
I can't tell if it's a meme or not because I've never seen a serious answer but what did the game mean by that line written in blood "There was a hole here but now it's gone"?
>Do you have any insights on why the hotel transformed thrice during the game? At first it is just a normal, albeit abandoned hotel
This is how to hotel normally looks like
> After James watches the tape, the hotel seems drenched in water, it's dripping in every corridor, almost as if the hotel was submerged under water and pulled out.
After watching the tape and realising he killed Mary, he realised that the reason he came to Silent Hill was to take his own life in a place of memories by driving into the like with the body of Mary in the backseat of the car. (japanese practice called Shinjū en.wikipedia.org
>And then after the twin PH fight, the hotel seems burned down and partially demolished,
The time for mourning is over. Now it's time to fulfil his obligation to Mary.
I think one is actually because he killed Eddie not too long ago.
In Water isn't the only ending. All 4 of the non-joke endings are equally viable, as the creators themselves have said.
I don't think he implied that it was the only ending, but it's certainly the fan favorite.
They are, but looking when you look at the story as a whole it becomes apparant that the In Water ending was the original intended ending. (not saying it is the 'one true ending' as most endings still fit with the rest of the series)
Worth mentioning that Leave fits the most with Crime and Punishment - which Sato said was the primary influence of the story (redemption through suffering).
Thanks for SH4 download. I can't find any torrents anymore.
Thanks for the dolphin porn
I'm too much of a pussy to play these games
You just need to shoot them a lot to make james feel better.
they aren't really scary tbqh, except for a couple of moments in 4
Also worth mentioning that in SH3 Douglas once went to Silent Hill for a missing person's case
and in SH4 the superintendent Frank Sunderland, father of James mentions that James went missing in Silent Hill.
>mfw reading all the Symbolism sections of the monster pages on SH wiki
Those fucks think everything is a metaphor for sexual frustration
>except for a couple of moments in 4
4 had burping nurses
Don't forget the stock monkey and jaguar noises
2 > 3 > 1 > Downpour > Homecoming > 4
the original SH games are some of the best ways to cure your pussiness. I've seen it work, many many times, in real practice.
For starters, their horror is not your typical "BOO LOUD NOISE MONSTER OOGABOOGA!" jumpscares. Instead, they rely on the creepy atmosphere and disturbing imagery. Audio plays major part in SH series.
Second, even if you're not usually into survival-horror, or heck - games in general, it's usually possible to still enjoy and appreciate many aspects of the original games: deep plot, memorable cast, awesome soundtrack and visuals, puzzles... etc. The 2nd and 3rd game even separates Action and Puzzle difficulties into two separated options, so if you dislike combat and spoopy monsters, you may wanna start with easy Action, but crank up the puzzles. Though personally I'd go Normal-Normal from the beginning.
I disagree quite a bit. SH1 especially is still one of the scariest games I've ever played (and trust me, I've played quite a bit of them). The sequels also have several disturbing scenes and haunting atmosphere.
1) Not nurses.
2) doesn't change the fact that the stuff with Room and some of the worlds are creepy as hell.
What bothers me about that ending is that Laura goes with James even though James admit to being a killer. It's a bit of an odd ending.
As a huge SH fan, I'm quite embarassed with the wiki
1 > 2 > 3 > 4 > SM > > > all the other shit.
2>1>SM>3>DP>rest shit.
Nah, 4 is literal garbage.
>DP even mentioned in the same sentence with Team Silent's games
Dis-fucking-custing as hell.
Downpoor's literally the worst game.
>But why are there two PHs?
There's always been two PH. You encounter both through out the entire game.
>1) Not nurses.
>2) doesn't change the fact that the stuff with Room and some of the worlds are creepy as hell.
No, it's not.
It has great visuals, very nice soundtrack, the Room is a total genius idea, and the background story and everything about Walter are pretty neat. And say what you say about Ghost, they're easily some of THE scariest creations in any game, ever.
SH4 may not be a god-tier horror game like SH1 and 2, but it still beats the living fuck out of any western-made wannabe SH title.
Like I said: they're not nurses.
Having one silly glitch (that everyone seems to get) does not make the game bad, or negate the fact that it has great atmosphere and ideas.
Worse than Homecoming? You're joking.
>Only once PH poked her again did he start to realize that he needs to stop repressing his guilt.
This is the third time Maria died. He's not an idiot. He's realizes that Maria isn't real and is just fucking with him.
And your point is?
James could have left with Laura to somewhere entirely new and started a new life.
I've noticed this, but how should I interpret the nurses specifically?
>"Team Silent"
Every game from "TS" was made by different people. After 3 only Akira left.
welcome to freudian psychology, where all you really want to do is kill your father so you can fuck your mother.
No, I am not joking.
HC gets waaay too much flak, no matter that it's a shitty The Movie: The Game title. It at least WORKS, and is somewhat enjoyable to play.
DP, on the other hand, is broken by its writing, overall design, and tech-wise. It's literally THE worst SH game ever created (next to BoM), and the greatest buyer's remorse I've experienced since DNF.
The team's members did not change completely between the games. Some people left, some came, some remained through and through. The team was kinda split into two during development of SH2 and 3, which happened almost simultanously.
It's referential to Crime and Punishment - Laura playing the role of Sonya (though, obviously, without the romantic subtext lol)
>The team was kinda split into two during development of SH2 and 3, which happened almost simultanously.
I think you mean SH3 and 4
LMAO 2HEAD!
LMAO 2HEAD!
Magical great atmosphere. Some ppl feel it, some ppl dont.
But anyway, there weren't great ideas in this fucking mess.
Correct, take this.
Downpour was the game I was genuinely excited and optimistic about, but it was a huge disappointment:
-No Akira's soundtracks. You can hear it, you can FEEL it.
-The MC's inner monologue = fucking annoying.
-Indicators, flashing items and tips everywhere! Try to play without them, and you gonna be all lost for a while at least, as the game was DESIGNED with them to be ON.
-The chase scenes were annoying. Especially the last one. And I fucking liked SM for crying out loud.
-Bad and limited enemy design.
-A handful of characters that just... are. I guess they tried to personify the Town or something, but come on.
-The environments? Boring & full of copypaste.
-The side missions? POINTLESS in the end, as you get ripped off all your gear, and they don't even effect the ending!
-BAD combat. Yeah I know, and I always ran past 90% of enemies in originals as well, but holy shit this is WORSE than in SH1-4 if you ask me.
-UT3 engine bugs and annoyances (texture & area streaming, usually lagging badly behind, the Subway doors getting locked, random bug of being unable to pick up items ...)
-QTE -like scenes.
Last the story... there technically isn't one! It's not deep or cryptic at all, it's just CONFUSING - most probably because before the very end, the game doesn't know how the story even goes, when your choices are evaluated. In this sense the game actually contradicts ITSELF earlier on, as there's no alternative cutscenes or discussion choices.
Yes, it's slightly better than Origins, can't say any better than HC, but it's still a BAD horror game, and worse SH-game. Far from the original Tetralogy.
Nope. The development of 3 started before 2 was out.
Been a long time since I played an SH game but
>in 1 they were born from Alessa's mind, not Harry's, and are probably a byproduct of all the shit the order did to her giving her a fear of doctors and nurses
>In 2 they COULD represent sexual frustration but more likely have to do with his feelings on hospitals because of Mary
>3 I have no fucking clue, maybe the same as 1 given Heather's identity
>Homecoming and Downpour they were there because the older games had them
What happens to Laura in the water ending?
>He's not an idiot.
user...
how does that even sound remotely plausible though?
it might be a nod to the movie you mentioned, but mostly just comes off as sloppy writing
>there weren't great ideas in this fucking mess.
it was not a mess. It was a very well working, if not a tad more experimental game.
The element of the room alone is a struck of genius, letting you personally experience what the MC is going through, letting you witness the world both changing and remaining the same around you, all while you keep experiencing these "nightmares". The best part in the game is after the half point, though, when the established "safe place" gets slowly corrupted and infected by the external horrors.
Also, I feel like most people don't realize who the REAL "main character" of SH4 is. No, it ain't Henry.
Don't talk to me or my wife's son ever again!
What the fuck is wrong with the lighting? You're not supposed to see shit that clearly
Okay, he's kind of a dopey idiot.
But even he has his limits. Bitch keeps dying and then showing up again without explanation. 2nd time was weird. But this is the third time.
>movie you mentioned
f'am you need to get at least remotely cultured
She stays trapped in a ghost town.
You fags always forget the most important point.
After 4 the Americans took over the franchise. So it wouldn't matter how much TS changed through out the years. You people always exaggerate this anyways.
Firstly, it's
"There was a hole here. It's gone now."
And secondly, no one really has any definite idea. Personally, I think it's just supposed to be a vague and creepy thing, but it could refer to anything, from the holes in the prison James has to jump down, to the hole in the window itself, to some metaphorical hole.
yeah, some small people, like Keiichiro Toyama main game designer after first game, or Takayoshi Sato, writer of SH2, after second game.
But top men stayed working on this series. Top Men.
How is it implausible? I presumed that Laura has no family, and now James doesn't either. They just simply take off and start anew somewhere. People do it all the time, and it was even easier during the time period SH2 took place in.
>"There was a hole here but now it's gone"?
It's a metaphor for James' sexual frustration
His "hole" (Mary) was there, but now it (her vagina) is gone
This is part of why Leave is the most sensible ending on multiple levels. In water fags are in denial.
SH2 really encapsulates freudian psychology, I'm more of a jung guy but I can appreciate that.
Hey m8 do you know about the latest PS1 emulator plugin that ends polygon/texture warping? I tried to get pcsxr running with it the other day but I'm dumb and couldn't do it.
Does anyone have a working emulator with the plugin and doesn't mind uploading it?
You know, I really enjoy 1 and 3, but to be honest I always found the cult plot really dumb, and convoluted. I much prefer the more personal horror aspect of 2(The town and monsters in it appearing as a reflection of James' own issues), but it seems like I'm the only one who does.
What about the cult appeals to you guys?
Good insight, thanks m8
In Water and the other ones just leave Laura's fate unknown. Presumably after all this she can just leave. Or she wakes up in the real Silent Hill and someone takes her home.
There's only one peer on both the sh2 and 3 torrents... What are DDL's? Just the game uncompressed?
Everyone with at least 90 IQ prefers 2's story over the cult shit lol
Well, Henry was hardly character anyway.
But i think, you mean Walter Sullivan. What's his character? He just crazy evil guy. He was crazy even before cult messed with him.
Pretty sure it's just a level designer's joke.
>and now James doesn't either
we know from SH4 that at least his father is still around and knows his son is missing.
Douglas Cartland went on a missing person's case in Silent Hill, so obviously people are still looking for James....
IF james in fact killed Mary and left whith laura, what did he do with Mary's body?
Why would there be no mention of him being wanted for murder in the later games?
Not the person youre talking to but why are you using games written by other people to discuss sh2? sato had no input to 3 and 4.
SH3 wasn't even close to SH2, while room was far behind, so even if evil western people didn't get to the series, it would go to hell anyway.
BTW, Akira was a producer for Origins and Homecoming, but it wasn't his fault, right?
and the writers from SH2-4 had no input to SH1, what's ur point?
The cult storyline is pretty bad. I think they should have ended it in 1. Then it just becomes part of the background for the other games. My main gripe with 3 is that it focuses on the cult and that there's little if any mystery or ambiguity. It's so technically good, but it's just kinda not fun to analyze or debate over. Plus there are so few endings.
Sh2 is much more open ended.
You're presuming that the "Mary's body is in the trunk/back seat xD!!!" theory is true. There's no compelling evidence for it beyond a single engrish tweet from Ito a decade later, and he was just the artist. That, and the Laura time discrepancy, which still doesn't necceserily mean that Mary is in the trunk.
Going by your logic, how could the Maria or Rebirth endings be correct either?
Clearly the issue lies with the references given in the later games.
