New ideas, beyond obvious improvements to AI and graphics (since TDM covers that). There's no point to simply replicating Thief's gameplay, since the developer in question will probably not be able to outdo the originals and the collective efforts of all the FM authors over about 2 decades in terms of level design. So basically it shouldn't be a Thief ripoff.

In Thief Gold, I believe it only sounds when you get a new objective during the mission. In Thief 2 they started using it for completion and secrets.
