What are your thoughts on Wayforward?
What are your thoughts on Wayforward?
One of the few western developers who haven't fallen to the feminism meme so they're good in my eyes
youtube.com
They have lost their god damn minds.
...
Great flash games. Stupid fonts for menus.
I like their music. And Double Dragon Neon is pretty good.
...
Also this song. Dat funk.
...
Kinda mediocre company. Of the two games of theirs I've played, shantae risky's revenge and mighty switch force, I didn't find either particularly interesting or fun. I remember the art being kinda nice in them but nothing else stuck out to me. I question if they're only popular here as most people just jerk off to shantae which I admit I do.
I heard the new game they released, something girl without salad, isn't too good.
...
So are you going to get a physical copy of Half Genie Hero now thanks to based Xseed Sup Forums?
...
ew
Their passion projects are what make them great
They made a cute farting genie
...
I don't even know about this, so they must be bad
Bizarrely overrated for how mediocre every game they make is.
well that looks like shit
I think that this gif exists and that it's a great thing
Mediocre developers who'sg ames are carried entirely on good graphics and music
more like this
I think its pretty funny that shovel knight was made by ex-wayforward devs and its easily superior to anything wayforward has ever made. I wonder why that is.
Pirate's Curse was definitely their best game so far but it still suffered from too much backtracking and awkward unfun combat. Hoping the next one is a step up in both those regards. Pretty great character designs and music though.
remember when shantae was white
yes, those were dark times
...
>not drawing Skye chubby
this man does not know how to meme
>Pirate's Curse was definitely their best game so far but it still suffered from too much backtracking and awkward unfun combat.
Funny that this has been the case 3 times in a row yet they're still allowed to make a 4th fucking game that looks no different so far.
...
I like their games, both for the gameplay and the girls.
I consider SK on par with PC, though I agree it has better combat. Come to think of it, I first played SK and PC around the same time, within a month at most. Good month.
...
its really more surprising that it ever got a sequel, Shantae was a super obscure game that sold like shit and randomly they decided to make a sequel nearly a decade later.
You ask why its allowed for them to be this mediocre? Well compare the enormous success of shovel knight to the moderate success of the later shantae games and it seems appropriate to me. The presentation is pretty good, perhaps that's enough.
I want my first wish to make Shantae my wife
My second wish to make her be able to birth genie children
And my third wish for those children to be able to grant wishes.
Great guys.
SSS Sequel/Remake never though.
They made a sequel because they wanted to. It isn't about sales when it comes to Shantae. They were also trying to get RR made quite a bit before it happened, but it wasn't working out or something.
Play Pirate's Curse. It's very good (a lot better that Risky's Revenge at least)
sauce
>Stopped playing Risky's Revenge because a good chunk of the game was go from point A to point B to grab an item and take it back to point B all while going through shallow platforming level design
>Play Pirate's Curse because everyone says it's far better
>It's the same fucking thing, but the level design is even worse
I'll tolerate it for a bit more but talk about over hyping it
Switch Force is even pretty fun
I would like to see them make a spiritual successor to Mischief Makers
sauce?
I like WF games, but not really the threads for them. It's always just someone posting a picture of Shantae. And I mean just the character herself. Or Patty.
...
WHERE'S MY RESCUE GIRLLLLL
Like them for:
>character design (never fapped to any WF girls though)
>amazing music and art
>amusing gags and writing
>not giving a shit about SJW stuff
Bad at everything else (gameplay, challenge level mostly). Shantae:PC was their best game but it's only fun on Risky Mode in my opinion. Otherwise it is just too slow and you don't spend enough time fully decked out in the pirate gear, which is going away for HGH anyway. I probably won't even get HGH unless it's on sale, unless they do something amazing with the transformations it looks like the same old stuff.
I do like their games though, they have a lot of charm. I feel like they're a company that makes games because they genuinely enjoy making games, but because of that they have to stay afloat making tons of shovelware.
They have great talent on their team but they're a missing a piece of the puzzle, if they fill it in I think they could make some god-tier, 10/10 games.
...
They're just a bunch of faggots.
are you serious?
that's the biggest improvement pirate's curse made, other than overall more content I guess
Sorry pal, but you really ought to expect that for WF, especially on Sup Forums where the same thing happens for any series with sexy girls.
>Sorry pal, but you really ought to expect that for WF, especially on Sup Forums where the same thing happens for any series with sexy girls.
At least for other threads at least more than just one girl gets posted unless that thread is specifically centered around that one girl, to break up the monotony a little. I already see that this is just Shantae pics and it's the same ones I've always seen, too.
>Wayforward is actually making Catgirl without Salad.
Made, past tense
It looks like shit
Well that's true. I wonder why at least Rotty isn't posted more often.
Wayforward is probably the most Japanese western dev around.
I say this as a compliment.
More games need this level of funk.
She's an April Fool's gag, it's amazing she has any kind of game at all.
They make cute games.
You played the least interesting Shantae game.
That said, if you didn't like MSF I don't know what to say to you.
They coast by on their character designs but their games aren't particularly good and I don't enjoy the simplistic detail of their cartoony style, particularly when they have poor art direction and it clashes badly with environments.
youtube.com
DAT. BASS.
>that's the biggest improvement pirate's curse made, other than overall more content I guess
No, he's pretty much right. PC's level design is just as bad as RR's was, the only difference is that they went and split the game world up into a bunch of small islands, which makes exploring even less fun because of how massively disconnected everything feels. And then there's shit like that race section with Rottytops, which while kind of fun on its own, totally fucks up the flow of a metroidvania, especially when you have to backtrack through it later for more items you can't reach the first time.
I have no idea how Wayforward has been able to keep afloat all these years making retro platformers but I don't care.
I own their rare DS games and there's nothing you can do about it.
Oh my god yes. It looks so fucking amateurish, like something out of Gamemaker.
Say what you will about their games but their sprite art is some of the only modern stuff that isn't complete ass.
>That said, if you didn't like MSF I don't know what to say to you.
Some people don't like the puzzle-ish time attacks which is understandable.
MSF is not a good game in the slightest. The gameplay is repetitive, skill-less arse, and the visuals are garbage, especially by WF standards. The only reason to give a shit about it is the great soundtrack and MUH HIPS faggots.
Who else pirated Cat Girl Without Salad? It was pretty fun but I wouldn't have paid more than like 3 bucks for it.
i kinda expected more from WayForward with this. it looks like this will be like risky's revenge, fun but it will feel like something is missing always
I did, considering that I don't even know how I'm supposed to even buy it.
honestly one of the few small-time game companies I don't really like. and the thing is, they have everything going for them. let's talk Shantae for instance.
-it's got metroidvania influence
-it's got a well-designed cast of characters
-it's got hot babes
-it has a unique aesthetic
-Shantae using her hair as a weapon is a fucking great idea
but somehow I've never beaten one of the games. they just feel so stale and samey.
don't even get me started on mighty switch force. talk about wasted potential, right? is sixteen fucking short-ass levels really what qualifies for a good game now? I mean, I guess Portal only had 19 test chambers but it makes up for its shortness with really good writing and atmosphere and a billion other things I'm always ready to cream myself over, but MSF didn't have jack shit besides an okay puzzle mechanic that doesn't get explored nearly enough.
Yeah you're right it's skill-less that's why people speedrun it. Show me your times dude I bet you blow them out of the water.
Also yeah of course the gameplay is repetitive, it's a puzzle-platformer that focuses entirely on gameplay. Most of them are repetitive, and the people who like them are just fine with that.
WayForward is a low budget dev at the end of the day, they just have more fame than usual because of their sprite art and cute grills.
I wouldn't rank WayForward games among the best of the genre, or even particularly innovative for the genre, but they have enough charm for me to feel okay spending 7-10 bucks on them.
and bearing in mind that I've only played one Shantae game, MSF all the way through, and the beginning of the Ducktales remake, which I frankly could not stand. it's cool that they got the original voice actors and to their credit they did a great job and it warms my heart to see that they're still getting work, but holy shit that game was just plain not fun at all.
and what's with that pixellated effect on some of the character sprites in that game that doesn't actually encompass the whole sprite? it looks like pure wank. I honestly don't understand WayForward but they make money and I don't so I guess I can't talk.
>all female characters are important, capable, and powerful
>all male characters are weak buffoons
Tell me again how that's not feminism?
>charm
that's true. I guess I shouldn't be so demanding.
because I say it's not.
Women being strong is only the stated goal of feminism.
>mfw niggas come into shantae threads and type up essays about why they don't like the games
I swear it's the same handful of people too.
nah this is my first time. I'm really sorry for having an opinion man
I just don't get why they're so insistent on this quasi metroidvania type thing with all the backtracking. The system shovel knight had where you have a series of linear levels with a boss at the end, each with its own theme and game mechanics unique to that stage, that are interconnected by towns and bonus stages for you to cool down between levels so the game doesn't feel too monotonous. They really should follow that style for their games in the future I think, really I don't know why after castlevania sotn came out everyone seemed to forget that castlevania 3 was a good system, worthy of refinement too.
Don't lie, faggot.
The trailer is pretty fucking bad, the game looks better than it is.
For what it sets out to do, it's alright.
Like all WF games the charm mostly comes from the gag writing and art. The trailer didn't show that it (strangely) has full voice acting, the character portraits are animated and have bantz while fighting.
But, the sprite for your character is really static, and makes the game look really freaking bad at first glance. Like there's a death animation, and a victory animation, but beyond that your skirt just kinda blows around and everything else is static, it looks REALLY bad.
It's probably really low budget considering it was a joke game made for Humble Monthly, but it has full voice acting (and it's not that bad), good art (but not animation) and good music. It's probably really short though, I only played it for ten minutes so I don't know how long it is.
I welcome actual videogame discussion. And if someone's going to shit on a game I like, I'd rather them be thorough and descriptive than not. Though reading a couple of these negative posts I have to wonder if we played the same game.
I dunno what to tell you m8
Isn't Wayforward where Tomm "Unironically the world's biggest Silent Hill fan" Hulett works now?
this nigga right here. this is what we call an "adult", folks.
>I have to wonder if we played the same game
does Pirate's Curse get better as you go on? I'll admit I only played the first zone thing of it, and some assorted side shenanigans that I think were optional but may have been required.
WHEN IS THIS COMING OUT
REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
Wut? The only buffoon I can think of is the Mayor of Scuttle Town. Maybe Bolo, but he's canonically a good fighter. The girls all have their share of buffoonery, too. Shantae forgot she didn't own a bathtub for fuck's sake.
>not vidya but
no but, why did you post it if its not vidya?
back on topic
youtube.com
wtf was with this game's ending? The cute alien girl you're playing as blows up the earth.
bullshit, shantae is literally galbrush
>how DARE you discuss video games on Sup Forums
They're the Vanillaware of the west: decent gameplay, if a bit simplistic, but AMAZING 2d graphics and music.
T
he style and presentation are what sells it, particularly the quality of their pixel art and their partnership with Virt.
...
nigga, if you come at me posting the same wall of text everytime you see a shantae thread, eventually I'm gonna stop paying attention to you.
Catgirl Without Salad is one of the best games I've played in a while.
They're on the same level as Spark Unlimited, Double Helix, or Ninja Theory, but somehow they managed to build up a cadre of braindead waifufag followers
just another mediocre shovelware dev
but it's not
you have no indication to whether it's the same person or not
maybe the reason you see shantae games getting so much flak is because they're flawed and provoke discussion on a board about discussing video games
I mean, I genuinely think Gone Home was one of the best indie games to come out that year. how do you think I feel? do I bitch and moan every time someone rags on that game? naw nigga naw. I talk to them about it. I show my opinion and they show me theirs.
y'know, like people.
Is that pirate girl really supposed to be Shawntey´s mom?
>you have no indication to whether it's the same person or not
>Shantae loses her genie powers for pirate's curse
>the game actually plays much better with risky's weapons than her magic did in the last two games
Hmmm.
