Thw Wii U is underwhelming (it's probably what the "U" stands for), but it's got some modern classics to play in its disappointingly small library, and can be gotten at a good price if you shop around.
I don't really get the hate for the gamepad, as it's no heavier than a 360 controller and has a lot of useful features, it would be nice if it were an optional though.

Honestly, of all the Nintendo consoles, the Wii probably has the worst overall library, which has some classics like the Galaxy series and some gems like Zak & Wiki or Smooth Moves, but that's about it.

For the few games I did enjoy, I enjoyed them immensely. And honestly, there were so many unfortunate things that happened to this console that this is worst case scenario.

I bought it for Bayonetta 2 and played that through at least 3 times and some of the multi.
Hyrule Warriors, W101 and Smash are great games.

My only gripe is that they didn't put MH4U on the WiiU as well.

I personally felt 3D World is better simply for its level design, which was solid throughout in my view. You're right in saying that it's best played multiplayer, though. Also, I could understand preferring SMG so I'm by no means saying you're wrong.
I haven't played 3D Land so I've no idea if what you're saying is true, but I liked 3D World a lot, felt like each level had a great platforming theme and different experience - similar to why I like DKTF (although for what it's worth DKTF is a better game than 3D World, 3D World absolutely trumps it in length and multiplayer)
