I heard it has a pretty cool alchemy system and multiple routes for different endings and what now.

They're great JRPGs that focus more on characters and completing tasks instead of the usual save the world JRPG mission.
Synthesis is the main focus of atelier, using it to craft items to solve issues, fight battles. Sophie is a great place to start and its one of the best Atelier games to date.

sure it has pretty grafix and FF tactics composer, but the story is just your everyday fantasy anime drama and gameplay never goes beyond button mashing and tediously grinding Psypher to level your weapon
