I miss multi-disc games. There's a great sense of catharsis, anticipation and adventure when you finish a disc. All the best multi disc games always had cool ways to separate the discs, the one's that come to mind for me are Aerth's death, the destruction of Burmecia and getting on the boat to go to the island in Resident Evil 4.
I agree that the multiple discs made many games feel more expansive and epic. Having the two MCs have their own discs in RESI made their stories feel a bit more unique.
Aaron Sanders
I don't, if you bought pre-owned games, it meant you could get through half the game before realising one of the discs is fucked. This is why I couldn't finish FF8
Daniel Nguyen
I don't miss the physical aspects of multi-disc games but I do like the ways they broke large scale adventure games into distinct acts with their own climaxes.
Levi Stewart
I thought they were a pain in the ass. The only reason multiple discs were a thing were because they couldn't fit it on the media. It's not like the PC release is split into multiple .exe downloads.
Lucas Walker
>First time I bought a multidisk >I thought it was the same game just on different disks
>I ended up giving them out to my friends
> I got stuck on FF7 this way.
Asher Bell
I remember the first time I played FF8 and when you reach the end of disc 1 and it makes you think Squall just got killed, I was so excited to start the next disc.
Zachary Edwards
Good thing the FF7 remake is episodic, I guess.
Liam Morgan
FFXV is doing that, actually.
Adam Moore
Today we call these games "Episodic" and look what a trainwreck that system is.... I dont think it will ever return mate.
Jordan Rogers
Holy shit
Adam Ortiz
Burmecia best town
Jason Ortiz
well "episode 1" will probably end with Sephiroth's death.
Austin Collins
>tfw you still have your physical copy of FF7 ,FF8 and FF9
Cooper Brooks
dat ost tho 10/10 boner levels with rainymood in another tab
Benjamin King
Yeah, multidisk games are so great.
Max Payne 3 Xbox 360 L.A. Noire Xbox 360 Rage Xbox 360
Wanna just chill out and play a game? HAHA nope get off your lazy ass on change the disk
Eli Mitchell
Anyone know why Abe's Exoddus was 2 discs? Didn't seem like it needed that much space.
Aaron Garcia
My guess would be FMVs, those were huge compared to the actual games.
Charles Ross
>Implying
Carter Smith
That's not what he meant, though. OP is talking about how a lot of PS1 RPGs were split over several discs and tended to have story structures built around it. You're talking about the 360 getting cucked in game size by DVDs.
Landon Smith
>mfw listening to Burmecia music and rainymood That is some patrician taste right there
Josiah Cruz
I just found my Baldurs Gate 2 disc booklet. 5 fucking discs. I got such a nostalgia boner it's not even funny.
Sebastian Cooper
Man, everything in ff9 was such shit.
Such a shame, I was hoping it was going to be a hidden gem of the series and it was just a fucking disappointment on all levels.
Josiah Cruz
As long as you're not hailing ff8 as something great, I can respect that opinion.
>implying FFIX is not the ultimate masterpiece by Sakaguchi
Thats some real shit taste desu
Best final dungeon inc youtube.com/watch?v=QJBUZqDPbao To this day there is not a single dungeon/level that can top the atmosphere and feel of Memoria, simply breathtaking.
Kevin Morris
Dude yeah. I bought FFVIII off of ebay, still in the shrinkwrap. Took me like 3 months to get to disk 4 because I was going through some shit at the time, and disk 4 wouldn't boot. I googled he problem and apparently there was a bad batch of disks made when it was released and those with a bad batch didn't have working disk 4's. I assumed this was the issue and messaged the person I bought it from and he was cool with it and I sent him back my copy and he gave me a new one, all shipping paid. That copy was also busted so I told him no dice. Sent it back and got a refund. He was kind of slow about it so I made up some shit about not being able to pay my rent if he doesn't refund me soon and I could be kicked out. He sent it the text day.
Lincoln Wright
you deserved it for being a retard
Liam Watson
got a higher res version of that?
Julian Sanders
dumb final frogposter
John Bell
Nope, sorry, just searched for Memoria in google, I used to have screenshots but that was in the old pc.
I can do one now though, gimme 10 minutes or so.
John Perez
>Beat the final boss >please insert disc 2
Kevin Garcia
>mfw people complained they had to switch dicks for Lost Odyssey and RAGE
I guess I underestimated how lazy people got.
Hunter Ward
>It's not like the PC release is split into multiple .exe downloads.
Nigga, were you not around for FMV era? Let alone old floppies when you had games with 10+ floppies.
Nvm I fucking lost my FFIX save state with 100% completion, holy fuck I'm mad now.
Adam Wood
reason why movie took so much space was because compression was nonexistent so you had them running in shit resolutions and using interlacing. it took a good long while for video to catch up to storage properly without hogging all the space.
Gavin Clark
>Starfleet Academy We bros now.
Joshua Miller
Thay sucks. I have one on my ps1 memory card. Afraid to turn it back on incase something went wrong. Whats up with the steam ff9? 21 bucks? The fuck.
Nicholas Taylor
It was pretty amazing having multi-disc games, but with the way technology works now, there's no real reason to swap discs out anymore
Adrian Allen
it's the vidya equivalent of flipping the vinyl album over
Ayden Rogers
Real or not I kekked
Asher Brown
The steam version feels weird, the backgrounds and models dont go well together and for some reason the game feels like it loses its charm, the textboxes are one of the bigger offenders of that >pic related
Thomas Clark
>time to switch to disc 2 >disc cannot be read
this is why I don't like disc swapping. not to mention blu-rays have bigger capacity and you literally need to take a knife to them to fuck them up.
Adam Reyes
yeah man, because I really enjoy looking at fucking pixelated dialog boxes. your complaint is silly.
Ian Thompson
>Lost Odyssey >already tearing up like a bitch with most of the short stories >get to the end of disc one >completely lose my shit >take at least a few days to even replace it with disc 2
Mason Turner
It's makes total sense things would end up this way but it's unfortunate given the feeling of awe when changing the disk after a major act on a game
Mason Miller
Thats a valid complaint you fucking retard, same goes with the character remodels you fuck. That is kinda wierd. Wonder why the didnt just redo the whole fucking thing. >inb4 they lost muh source code
Lucas Rivera
>Wonder why the didnt just redo the whole fucking thing.
Do you realize how much work would be required to redo the pre rendered backgrounds or redo the backgrounds in 3d? Definitely more than the effort SE is willing to put out
Easton Collins
>Jason
Tyler Baker
Not my screenshot, got it from google senpai.
Aaron Mitchell
>Friend of mine gives me a game that says Disc 2
>Can't fucking play it because it says I have to Clear Disc 1
Logan Roberts
>Taking a disc 2 and not asking for disc 1 as well
Seriously?
Jacob Peterson
>disc 2
Nathaniel Green
>Midgar bike scene >exit midgar >screen prompts >"Thank you for playing, please buy the next episode :)"
Andrew Hernandez
And then...the worst part of the game.
fuck that prison snore
Owen Powell
>music plays in head

that and zorn and thorne theme best
also red rose of may
Jackson Reed
>tfw you beat ozma on your first attempt, but only because rebirth flame procced twice on only 28 pinions.
Daniel Smith
Fuck me
Chase Flores
yeah, it was forever ago, but I still remember desperately using jump to try and dodge as much bullshit as possible.
Lincoln Davis
I miss when games would use redbook CD audio.
Just pop the game disc in your CD player and the soundtrack would play. That was rad.
Aaron Anderson
Please insert disk two. I pressed the power button instead of the eject disk button.
Christopher Brooks
Alien Isolation on 360 required 4 discs
Andrew Johnson
Holy hell, op. You're such a slave to your physical media. Sense of catharsis etc? Quit talking out your ass you overly emotional fool.
Cameron King
your class of 2020 pride is showing.
Jeremiah Moore
>remake never ever
Josiah Clark
While they were nice in a console game, I sure as don't hell miss em on PC side. I remember having a pc game with 6 installation disks, might've been WoW or one of the Unreal Tournaments.
Evan Smith
>Beatrix acts like a complete dumbfuck the entire game >Genocides the fuck out of Cleyran, Burmecians, and countless others >Just a prank bro all is forgiven oh and you get best boy too
FUCK THIS SHIT
Evan Sanders
That image gave me Cancer
Brody Butler
Holy shit I can't stop laughing at this.
Kevin Brooks
>beatrix gets best boy wait what? when was there beatrix x hippaul /ss/?
Jacob Torres
...
Grayson Cox
Well played.
Jackson Richardson
...
Isaac Ramirez
Prison segments in games are usually the worst(lose your weapons, etc.). At least some games like Chrono Trigger, and Skies of Arcadia got them right.
Benjamin Howard
Oh the childhood, i want to rage like i did back then. Those unbeatable bosses and the triumphs.
Austin Thompson
They were a pretty unique product of their time and I agree the way they always had a special climax to end a disc was an interesting way to have to structure a story. Rather antiquated in our time, unless of course you're making some fucking behemoth of a game, but I think that makes them all the more special.
Jayden Cruz
>the only thing that's unbeatable is your ass from where I'm sitting, now get over here, boy! I miss my dad.
