What went wrong?
What went wrong?
>Bad Marketing
>Droughts
>Third parties making shitty ports of years old games at full price and blaming others forthe low sales
Pretty much it.
Power means jack shit, as the Wii proved the generation before. It was all a lack of proper marketing (which followed with consumers' confusion) and Nintendo being slow with HD games development.
Cinematic FPS
The controller is one of the best parts about the Wii U. Nintendoland is great. The thing that killed the Wii U was lack of good games.
I'll never understand why Nintendo doesn't make Zelda or Metroid games more often. Either one of those titles coming out in the first 12 months of a consoles lifespan will boost sales immensely.
Main issues were, in no particular order:
>The name
>The "tablet" design (too new at the time of announcement, outdated by the time it came out)
>the name
>forsaken "core" fanbase due to marketing tactics used to acquire and maintain fanbase of the wii
>the name
>Lack of third party developers interested in developing for gimmicky system, based on unique hardware as opposed to the more and more homogenous stuff we're seeing elsewhere
>the name
>slow trickle of first party releases and lack of post-launch support (see:splatoon) just sort of pissing off the few people who DID buy one
>the name
>admitting their fault by launching a new system, supposedly with another gimmick, ensuring their lack of support through third party developers, as, even if untrue, it will surely scare consumers away pre-emptively because the internet fucks with people's minds
and then lastly
>the name
Find the console! :
Wii Zapper, Wii Play, Wii fit, Wii motion plus, Wiimote, Wii Wheel, Wii sports,Wii fit plus, Wii Sports resort, Wii balance board, Wii Party,Wii Play Motion, Wii Music, Wii vitality sensor, Wii Speak,Wii Points Card
Normies didnt know it was a new console at release and that following holiday season. Lack of install base scared publishers. The rest is history.
So. Fucking. This.
Bayo 2 BELONGS on the ps4
>What went wrong?
The dam thing is based on an intrusive gimmick.
the controller is bigger the the console
Bad third party support.
Smash 4 is casual garbage its not even fun to watch the top players
Add in
>region locking
>shitty localisation
>shitty accounts system
>exclusives that should have been selling points being bungled (such as starfox zero)
The little things all add up.
could not have said it better M8
>The House of the Dead 4 will never be ported to the Wii or Wii U
I'm still mad. We get 2, 3, and Overkill, but the bundle of baller that is 4 is only on PSN.
keep begging pathetic sonycuck
Your mother gave birth
That fucking gamepad makes up 1/3 the price of the console.
Xbox one didn't have any problem with its name despite being 10 times more retarded.
This. This is what went wrong.
the name
and it was a fucking gimmick controller used for maybe 10 games well across its entire lifespan
Microsoft didn't released over 30 products named Xbox something, and then called the next console Xbox something else.
Xbox
Xbox 360
Xbox One
Wii
Wii U
The entire console should have been the gamepad.
Some official Nintendo tablet computer, for playing games and shit.
>mfw it's still the objectively best console
This console did everything right marketing wise, but nintendo and everyone else on the industry severely misunderstood it.
They never got that the casuals were actually expecting a realistic simulation of the sports instead of waggleshit.
So, they went and did everything else assuming casuals actually liked the waggleshit and colorful idiocy.
Wii Zapper, Wii Play, Wii fit, Wii motion plus, Wiimote, Wii Wheel, Wii sports,Wii fit plus, Wii Sports resort, Wii balance board, Wii Party,Wii Play Motion, Wii Music, Wii vitality sensor, Wii Speak,Wii Points Card
Any of those cost 350 dollars?
>wasn't up to par with the Xbox and ps, which I feel like people actually wanted
>almost no third party support, and very limited first party support.
>was another nintendo gimmick console that wasn't too different from wii in terms of power, and therefore not viewed by many as their next proper console
>no good marketing before release
Artificial Wii sales.
Bad Marketing.
Man, the sonyponies are still salty they lost last gen i see.
Nope.
But how you know its not an accessory without asking the price?
>forsaken "core" fanbase due to marketing tactics used to acquire and maintain fanbase of the wii
Like publishing a time-exclusive update of Ninja Gaiden 3, get bayonetta 2 and upgrade bayonetta 1, and pay for Project Zero V?
By reading the display price
By looking at advertisements plastered all over the fucking gamestop
it didn't have enough legendary singleplayer games and it had poor marketing. Gamepad was a mistake.
despite this, it's still one of the greats. I really enjoyed bayonetta 2 smash 4 splatoon mario kart 8 pokkén tournament pikmin 3 dkc tropical freeze wind waker hd
>No 3rd party
>First party games are some of there worst releases
>Poor marketing
>Hugely underpowered
>Poor account system
>d bayonetta 2 smash 4 splatoon mario kart 8 pokkén tournament pikmin 3 dkc tropical freeze wind waker hd
Nice list, i got 600 hours between 3U and XBX
Sony should've funded it then
And why are you in the gamestop if there's nothing that got you there?
Xbone is also a shitty name but it does have a small pass since anyone under 11 won't even know there was an original xbox and anyone over 19 was to young to really remember it.
It's closer to NES SNES than Wii Wii U
Plus like said there are so many Wii -something addons
Even if they are cheaper Wii stuck a very naive audience when it comes to games.
I don't really need to explain this, Fact is people didn't know Wii U was a new thing.
>which I feel like people actually wanted
>very limited first party support
0/10
So it's not a name problem then. The problem is why little timmy's mom didn't go to gamestop.
>>First party games are some of there worst releases
That's a blatant lie.
the wii was shit too
Because she didn't knew the console existed, to go there and buy it in first place.
If the thing was called something else instead of Wii, or at least Super Wii, she would know.
So where would she hear about this super wii then?
>none of them are the console
Find the retarded guy! :
The same place she heard about the Wii.
>Smash 4 is casual garbage
And so is the Smash Bros. franchise.
>No zelda
>Star Fox
>Animal Crossing
>Kirby
>Smash isn't as good as the one on Wii or GC
>Xeno series
Which series do you feel best performed on the Wii U?
>none of them are the console
How long took to you find it out?
Gamestop? To buy little timmy his christmas present? How old is little timmy now then?
don't you ever get tired of console war shit
go play a videogame you fat bald faggot
10 of course.
You know that nintendo fans are like Ash Ketchum, right?
its a weak console without good games
Or the TV. You know there were those commercial for Wii. I heasr they were pretty good.
Why not just make a god damn console with a good, normal, non gimmicky controller as a primary input, make sure all first party games are out on release or trickle into release within the first year of release?
This is what made the snes and n64 successful, why ever change a winning formula while it's doing good?
Was there ever a killer app for Wii U that justified its controller?
The Wii had Wii Sports, which you could easily understand the potential and appeal of (even if most other games just tossed in needless waggle). Wii U had..Nintendo Land, where if you have friends one of you can play against the others? IMario Maker uses it as a tablet, but couldn't you just accomplish the same with with the Wii Remote pointing at the TV?
Pardon my ignorance, I pretty much lost interest in games over the last 10-15 years and the Wii was the last system I got. I didn't ever have a DS, so are there any games that really justify the dual/touch screen except maybe that Kirby game with the stylus?
So she would have seen a tv ad about the super wii and went off to buy it? But seeing an ad about wii u would make her confused? What the difference? They both would show the console and the tablet controller right?
Plus the name, and maybe the gimmicky being forced instead being optional, I agree. Power doesn't mean shit, since MK8, SM3DW and SSB4 in general look great.
>Smash isn't as good as the one on Wii or GC
How? Smash 4 is a massive upgrade from Brawl in every way, and Melee's gameplay is artificially deeper, which is bad because it only raises the skill floor for no reason. "L-Canceling" is bad game design. Melee is also janky as shit, which does make it more fun to watch because pros can pull off batshit crazy things with the fucked up mechanics, but Smash 4 is simply a better and more balanced video game.
I don't disagree with the other games you mentioned, but I would say Mario Kart 8 is the best Mario Kart game, and even though it's a remaster, WWHD is my favorite Zelda game.
TV told her about at least 4 or 5 other "Wii somethings".
>Was there ever a killer app for Wii U that justified its controller?
I would have bought a WiiU JUST for playing Animal Crossing.
Apparently Nintendo aborted the development on an AC game for the WiiU, and shat out amiibo festival using the assets that had already been developed.
Only a handful of games and maybe a couple that used the gimmick well or even at all.
So a wii u ad wouldn't show the console? But a super wii ad would?
That's ok user, Games are subjective.
Well, that's probably another point where nintendo failed, giving the screen too much time and not exactly showing the device itself.
>underpowered
>shitty architecture making ports not worth it
>big clunky gimmick controller that raised the price of a console that could have costed $99 with a regular controller
>shitty marketing campaign
>all casuals & kids (the target audience) moving to phones
>online was free but very limited
>overpriced games and accessories (ancient games like Pikmin 3 still cost 45€ here)
>the competition was simply much better in every single aspect
TL;DR they didn't do anything right.
>the name
Fucking nintenyearold actually believe this. If anyone had any interest in this other than following the latest fad, they'd know it was a new console. Except nobody gave a shit, no one gave a shit about the shitty wii, they bought it because it was the latest weight loss tv remote sports game fad. The Wii U had a clunky piece of shit controller with a million buttons that looked like a severely deformed iPad with a screen straight out of the nineties so not only they didn't care to begin with but when they caught a glimpse of it at the store they weren't interested in the slightest.
Was Wii U much worse than Xbox One? With the number, Xbox literally went back compared to 360, except no one mistook it for a rerelease of the first xbox. Because a few people actually cared about the Xbox.
Stop being this fucking dumb please.
This + region locking and rehashed first party offering that didn't take any risk. Seriously I like Nintendo but so far there's not a single game that just by looking at it doesn't make me feel like I already played that shit a million time.
The only remotely interesting game on Wii U so far is Breath of the Wild which is actually taking some risks to change the stagnating Zelda formula, and even that isn't coming out in a long time.
I rather they be this dumb. I rather they have a false hope that the next Nintendo hardware will not fail because the name is not Wii U.
Nope. I still talk to people who don't know what the WiiU is. And, because nobody owns the fucking thing, these people would never have a chance to know what a WiiU is.
Splatoon ain't a rehash.
Also, it's not like the other consoles are any better in that regard. Just sequels, remasters and shit. I'm not saying you implied otherwise, but I just thought I'd point that out.
Because nobody cares about it. Thanks for confirming my point. If they did care about it they would have researched if a new wii was coming out or something. But they didn't research anything because the Wii itself was a short lived fad, and nobody cares to know if there is a new one or not.
Try to ask them if they know what a Wii is, they probably don't even remember they have one.
Won't those guys question why is there no Wii 2 if they have so much fond memories of it and want more?
Literally this because lots of kids would rather buy 150 dollar tablets then a full priced console.
>ancient power PC trash.
>at least 100 dollars overpriced.
>no games.
>the handful of games worth a fuck ended up selling poorly because there was no installbase, thus going off shelves, never getting reprints, and fading from memory.
>tablet controller is ass.
>no fighting games.
>no racing games.
>no sports games.
>no FPS games.
>arcane online without voice chat.
>roughly 1% of all games even have online.
>8 months between worthwhile game releases.
>Shiggy Diggy, Reggie, and Iwata lying and damage controlling their machine for years.
>zero reason to own the thing if you actually want to play videogames.
>Was there ever a killer app for Wii U that justified its controller?
Super Mario Maker
Splatoon
.....
Fuck, I can't think of anything else.
>The Wii U was so bad iwata had to fake getting cancer to hide the fact he committed sudoku
I liked the wonderful 101. Shame we'll probably never get another game like it, since it sold like 20 copies.
>Fucking nintenyearold actually believe this. If anyone had any interest in this other than following the latest fad, they'd know it was a new console. Except nobody gave a shit, no one gave a shit about the shitty wii, they bought it because it was the latest weight loss tv remote sports game fad.
Completely agree. Ironically, the Wii did actually sell well because of its games. The convenience of having a Wii in your living room, being able to do something exciting with your family while reassuring yourself that what you're doing is somewhat healthy, the same convenience of being able to train your brain from your sofa with a little two-screen device (ignoring the sad stupidity of these thoughts) is what sold the Wii.
The Wii U didn't have any of this. There's a new (or rather, another) Wii Fit, a new Wii Sports (hidden somewhere on the eShop), a new Party game, a new Mario Kart, but nothing you haven't already played.
The gamepad is not a tablet you can take with you to check your emails and the weather on the go. It's a controller.
Competing against the Wii is like competing against smartphones. There's just no need to buy one.
The PS4 sells because it's being marketed as a "home entertainment" machine, it's got a blu-ray player, the movies and all the multiplats. Console gamers have long defected to Sony and now treat the Wii U like the failure it is.
You grew up.
I find the Gamepad controller unwieldy and despite having the Wii U cracked with all 15 games available I never touch it because most games require the Pad.
Cemu can't progress fast enough.
IT felt cheap as a whole to me.
Imagine. Imagine how much better this game and many more would have been if the Wii U was more powerful.
>tfw got the Wii U for this and Bayonetta 1+2
They stick with old architecture while Microsoft and Sony moved to PC-like architecture (x86-64). This and not powerful enough to run today's unoptimised and half-assed games.
That being said Nintendo still managed to release nice exclusives with good enough graphics. As you can see, some big devs are just too lazy to make original and efficient games on the Wii U architecture.
They should have either gone with the waggle shit or dropped it altogether. They went somewhere down the middle and lost both the casual market and most of the hardcore fans.
They should have
>market it as Wii HD/Wii Plus/Wii 2/Wii More
>MotionPlus controllers exclusive to Wii HD
>Skyward Sword exclusive release title
>traditional 1TB internal HDD
>full backwards compatibility with the Wii
At least sales wise it would be the smart choice. Probably a quarter of the casuals who bought the Wii and only played it for two weeks would upgrade, which is more than the total sales of the Wii U already.
Wonderful 101 had a very unique control scheme when drawing attacks.
Nintendo Land put good use of the Gamepad same can be said about Pikmin 3 shame most devs just opted out for it as a map or off tv play also didn't Deus Ex port use it rather well from what I heard?
Do you think I should get a WiiU if I want to play a few games on it but I'll know I'll spend many hours on these games? I'm not very interested in the other consoles so far so it's more about getting the console or not rather than choosing between consoles. Dumb question but do I need to have a TV or can I just use the tablet by itself? Some people told me so many different things I don't know who I should believe anymore.
Some games require the TV and cant be displayed on the gamepad, FE# for example, most can though.
Most wiiU games aren't time sinks and can be beaten within a day or a few hours. If you are into any of these games: MK8, Splatoon or Smash then you will get a lot of mileage out of your wiiU. Xenoblade is pretty long but I personally dropped that game 2 hours in due to its quality.
It depends if you're into the multiplayer games or not, if you aren't then you'll just end up playing and completing 5 or so games and have nothing else to play besides post purchase regret.
TLDR: If you're into its multiplayer games, you'll get mileage out of it, if not, think carefully about what you're getting into. The system is slow, games look pretty last gen and the game selection is kinda small.
I'm so used to handhelds that I'm impressed by anything a console does in terms of graphics at this point. Thanks for the info about the TV, I'll keep that in mind, especially because I really wantto try #FE out of sheer morbid curiosity. I don't play multiplayer games but I want to try it out someday, I guess I'll get Splatoon first then.
>no games
Income Nintenyearolds
>underpowered as tits specially for the price
>Gimmicked as fuck and only properly utilized said gimmick in a hand full of titles, the Kinetic of Nintendo
>no 3rd party games
>Shitty online
>awkward controller
>ill marketing
Honestly the small games on it are relatively decent and fun but its experience can be described as stroking cock to a newly acquired fetish. Pure ecstasy and enjoyment but very short lived.
lel have fun I guess
I bought the wiiU on Sup Forums's advice 2 years ago when the wiiU was in much better condition. The NX is also just around the corner. I really suggest you save your money and at least wait for that announcement, it'll most likely have digital backwards compatability with the wiiU.
I guess I'll wait, unless I can find it for cheap. People tend to resell their used consoles and games for really cheap just to get rid of things.
Why is the storage space so shitty?
>inb4 external storage
I think the wii u sold less than it deserved.
Games like Splatoon, Mario Maker, Mario Kart, Mario 3D World and others are not only great but sold more than one million.
I think Nintendo could make more games like Animal Crossing, Metroid and more new ones and they would sell well too. But they don't wanna bother with the wii u anymore.
I'm pretty sure if Zelda would come this year it would sell more than 2 millions.
The main problem is the lack of games now, it was good until last year. I just hope it gets a few more.
If Kimishiwa is saying the truth, then there's some hope for such wasted potential console, that's Wii U.
It costs as much as the consoles with more games owned by more people with better graphics because it wants me to use a shitty tablet that I intend to use for nothing on the console.
Only mario maker made me want to use that thing, but the much better option wouldve been to sell the tablet separately. But alas, as consumer friendly as it may be, its only nintendo-brand-innovation if the tablet is mandatory and must be used to turn on the fucking system.
