He essential was the MC in terms of importance to the story, with Ashe being the other most important character. Vaan is really just a narrative / framing device to tie everyone's stories together. Just because a character is introduced first doesn't mean they are the main character. By that logic, the MC dies in the first 10 minutes of the game.
