PS2 are the Golden Trio of games, start with 4 then go to 5 then go to 0. If you're in love with the series you can start going back and forth into the rest of the catalogue. Assault Horizon is shit ace combat, mediocre as a game with QTE plane-fu. If you have a 3DS, the Assault Horizon game is actually a remake of 2 or 3 I can't remember. It's really good though.
The PS2 games are excellent and some of the best vidya I've ever played, and I got into this series this year.
6 is still solid but it's 360 only. I want to try the PSP games but haven't, hear good things though.

All PS2 games are good. My personal favorite is Zero, simply cause it's built around a lot of dogfights and it has one of the best final boss fights of anything PS2 related
The ones who are lacking a bit are AC6 and Assault Horizon.
AC6 cause it's got too much retarded shit and melodrama that goes nowhere on it.

And Assault Horizon cause it was made during the time Japan was trying to appeal to western gamers and they just turned Ace Combat into Bad COD with fighter jets.
Even then, both of those are decent.

Assault Horizon is the only really bad one, the West release of 3 is horribly barebones compared to the original but not bad. 3DS one isn't the worst but also not great.
The rest are all pretty good with the standout ones being the PS2 trilogy.

a lot of rio hamamotos tracks could be better, if the noise or metal elements would get towned down to get a better transition between parts or just an overall nicer flow.
I really dig his signature style though and enjoy it. Though sometimes I just feel he goes to far in a few places ruining an otherwise very good track.

I liked the grinding feature, and the fact that you can upgrade your planes, and even unlock paint schemes and emblems. It made all the work I put into my qt MiG-21 to be viable to the end worth it.
But you are right about the HD editions, although that's honestly asking for more than just offering infinity again.
