why did the dreamcast fail? was the world not ready it?
Why did the dreamcast fail? was the world not ready it?
Yes no maybe
games weren't that good
I dont know
Sony had a big hand in gimping Sega. They openly threatened to blackball developers for making games on DC.
Remember, the bleemcast upscaled ps1 games better than the ps2 could ever and that was 3rd party fare.
Shenmue
Power Stone
Seaman
ChuChu Rocket
Crazy Taxi
Samba de Amigo
Typing of the Dead
Toy Commander
Bangai-O
Space Channel 5
Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike
Sword of the Berserk: Guts' Rage
Maken X
Outtrigger
Sega Marine Fishing
Frame Gride
all these games were great and were available before the ps2 even launched. the dreamcast was pretty much DOA nothing could have saved it
PS2 + piracy + Sega's past blunders (32X, Saturn in the west) + Shenmue's budget
I want to touch Nightmare's shoulder.
your mom wasn't that good
Sony, the Saturn's failure in the west, and Sega in-fighting killed it.
dreamcast didn't fail, the saturn was just too big of a failure that the dreamcasts success just couldn't save it.
if you were alive when the dreamcast came out (which you probably weren't) many of the people you knew would probably own one.
very little people that i knew around the time of the dreamcasts release didn't have one.
A great chunk of the worthwhile games on it were arcade ports. Don't know it that's the reason it failed but it makes it way less appealing for me.
Saturn was actually a huge hit in Asia. Comparable to how only Megadrive was successful in the US, while Japan didn't really care about it much.
For one thing it was way too easy to pirate games for it. My cousin used to have huge stacks of games he burned from his PC.
Great system though and in my opinion it was ahead of its time.
>No Zelda
>No Smash Bros
>No Mario
>No Luigi's Mansion
>No Crash
>No Spyro
>No Jak and Daxter
>No Halo
>All it had was SA2
Yeah I wonder what happened
Yeah, those games may be fun, but almost all those games you listed are just arcade games with no real depth. In an era of much bigger games, no one wants to just play chuchurocket and sc5
>arcade games can't have gameplay depth
Fuck off, storyfag.
>all those games you listed are just arcade games with no real depth.
it had a lot more than SA2
I don't know if you guys are stupid or too young.
But it failed because of the PS2. It also didn't have a DVD player like the PS2.
It couldn't play movies.
honestly half of those games would just be mobile games now.
i fail to see your point
Why would a sega system have exclusive IP games made from competing companies, and have IPs that didn't exist yet?
Or could it?
What is your point?
You could play every single game for free if you had internet
Who is the best character in Power Stone and why is it Pride "Foxy Grandpa" Falcon?
There is a documentary or two on the issue. Basically, Sega knew they only had a few months to a year. DC was Sega's "Final Fantasy" It just didn't pan out.
Sega almost partnered with Sony after Nintendo dicked them over, we'd be in a much better world in a Sega/Sony monopoly with Sony doing hardware and Sega making great games still.
>Sony + SEGA in its PRIME
That sounds like some kind of magical gaming paradise.
Wang tang
>Had to compete with the PS2
>Genesis x32 and Sega CD were failures
>Little 3rd part support
Saturn's failure turbo fucked it that hard
best dreamcast beat em up ever
This guy summed it up.
>tfw I played Shenmue for the first time recently
Why is it so good?
I don't even know why I like it so much.
Because it had pretty much exactly a year to capture the market before the PS2 dropped in and established an effective monopoly with its significantly superior graphical performance, larger selection of development teams, and superior DVD format. Fuck, even before the PS2 dropped Sony still held a full 60% of the NA market on the PSX alone. A year just wasn't long enough to push Sony out and switch brand loyalty from Sony to Sega.
>sword of the beserk guts rage good
No it wasnt, the outdoor levels were fun but the game breaks as soon as you go indoors
Because its the only video game that portrays that 80's cheesy kung fu feel to it
an atmosphere that has been criminally underrated in the vidya industry, play Shenmue 2 its better in every aspect
Holy shit you're definitely underage
No way, the dinosaur chef dude
>PS2 released almost exactly a year later in US and EU
>DVD-ROM, so it can play films
>full backwards compatibility with all PSX titles ensuring continued brand loyalty
>limited backwards compatibility with PSX controllers and memory cards, allowing them to sway potential buyers on a budget
>USB, IEEE, and ethernet ports and a HDD expansion bay allowing the console to mature via peripherals and allowing neat shit like burning audio from a CD to a minidisc or use the IR sensor for remote controls
>by far the largest console library of all time thanks to a stable of dedicated development teams
>rudimentary networking via the i.LINK port, superseded by ethernet networking with the slim
Dreamcast just could not compete with the absolute monster that was the PS2 on release.
Because literally everyone was either waiting for 1. The next Playstation or 2. The next Nintendo
If you were a Saturn owner you might have bought a Dreamcast, but every other customer would have had to been convinced to buy a Sega when everyone was already talking about the next Sony box.
