Outside of Boom (which is a spin-off anyway) Sonic never really had bad redesign.

Modern Sonic always looked like Classic just got older, lost weight, grew his hair out and got green contacts.

BAD Redesigns: making the character go through whatever style is "hip" at the moment (the '90s were the era of glossy metal effects and bad CGI, the '00s of faux-futuristic stuff and bloom effects, the '10s of post-minimalist squaresy bullshit, etc.)
GOOD Redesign: actually improving the character, lightening up the unnecessary and emphasizing the important stuff.
Why can't people just do this or let it stay the same?

He has. He became nu-Mario since nu-Super Mario Bros. Back in the SNES and N64 days he had personality but he's been homogenized like the rest of the cast.

The thing about Million Monkeys is that it made the series more serious at the point where Spike was stabbed in the anime.

Crash has a chance at a revival. Him being dead means that Activision has no reason to keep their claws wrapped tightly within his flesh.
