Is Dark Souls a WRPG or a JRPG?

Is Dark Souls a WRPG or a JRPG?

It was made in Japan, so it's a JRPG. It just happens to have attributes more commonly found in WRPGs.

It's an action game with stats, which basically means that it's a JRPG.

>western theming
>western setting
>western architecture
>western weaponry
>western armor designs
>western mythological creatures

>its japanese

ok

Yes, exactly.

>Made in Japan
>Its Japanese

That's how it works.

It's primarily an action game that happens to have some RPG elements.

it's an arpg made by a japanese company with a western fantasy setting.

All the people saying it's a WRPG are probably only saying so because WRPGs have been mediocre for the longest time, so much so that the Japanese can make better games in their setting that they can

Those are vague terms and not really helpful. The game was made in Japan. It has a mostly Western setting.

It's a 3D metroidvania.

This is the fagey millennial nu-male answer.

It's more of a 3rd-person aRPG.

It's an aRPG, always has been. Why is this even an argument.

This retarded fag is correct.

That's not how a lot of people define JRPG anymore as the market has evolved. Classic JRPG had pretty much the same formula: story focued, limited/no choices. WRPG are more open and provide more choices to the player, at the expense of a less focused narrative.

It's hard to classify Dark Souls as one of those because the story can be completely ignored, but the balance is tipped towards WRPG because of choices you can make as to who you kill and don't kill.

It's an Action RPG that was made in Japan.

Dark Souls is a bad racing game.

American games don't have gameplay. They can't even figure out simple gameplay concepts such as i-frames. Instead they have enemies wait around then put PRESS X TO PUNCH on screen

It's a fucking JRPG. You're a retarded fuck if you believe that it suddenly becomes a WRPG because "hurr durr it doesn't feature magical girls and pantsu"

>Classic JRPG had pretty much the same formula: story focued, limited/no choices.

This is bullshit. Play any SaGa or Metal Max game.

Nintendo in the 90's (and later Sony) was retarded about what they brought to the west. There are plenty of non-linear game series that simply don't come here.

Dark Souls is a/an:
ARPG: You are correct.
JRPG: You're a bit slow.
WRPG: You are retarded.

who cares

Like what?

I bought some fried rice and spring rolls. Since they were made in Canada, it's Canadian food.

It's a shit game.

Japanese =/= anime

The Souls series is very Japanese.

Is arguing about subgenre classification a sign of autism?

Dark Souls biggest influence is Castlevania, another Jap game.

Dark souls is more of a rpg than ever other jrpg, because you actually role play.
You have to make up the motives and relationships of your character.

It's an ARPG.

>western skin therefore it's western
>would it be a ZRPG if it had a Zulu setting?

Dark Souls is Zelda+Metroidvania+some western influence like Fighting Fantasy and Severance Blade of Darkness. At its core, It's Japanese as fuck.

It's science

Playing make-believe doesn't make a game an RPG. All you can do in Dark Souls for the most part is kill people, or not kill people. You can't actually act upon whatever personality you pretend your character has.

The only thing it really has in common with WRPG's is the setting, and the only thing it really has in common with JRPG's is its country of origin.

It's an Action RPG

It's a good game so its a JRPG

Is there a difference?

No... it's just a JRPG

>JRPGs are all look like anime
Dark Souls is a rip-off of Berserker, therefore JRPG.

>Nintendo in the 90's (and later Sony) was retarded about what they brought to the west. There are plenty of non-linear game series that simply don't come here.

So what?

JRPG is a western term and it exists because there was a very distinct style to Japanese RPGs that they did bring out over here.

Looool it's made by a nip company

Dark souls is an MRPG
M stands for middle.

M is for Mario.

It's an arpg, action/rpg.

Country of origin has no bearing on the genre.

>Zelda+Metroidvania

It's not equipment locked though. You don't gain more abilities/gear that allow you to transverse things that you previously could not, it has few environmental puzzles and and can beat most everything with your starting equipment.

No. Jrpg is a game in the style of Dragon Quest. Developer's nationality is irrelevant.

But all RPGs have action.

But Dragon Quest took heavily from both Ultima and Wizardry.

Wouldn't that make it a WRPG too?

Name me one western made DQ-like.

what was the last WRPG that had metroidvania level design, dungeon crawling elements, skill based combat, no morality system, no dialog choices, a big focus on combat, silent protag and very few NPCs and side quests? Dark souls is a fully japanese game, other than its setings being Tolkien like

Breath of Death and Cthulhu Saves the World

Triggered.

Its an arpg idiots. Jrpgs are just linear stories where you subtract a number from something to unlock the next cutscene.

"Action/adventure" with stats is called "action/rpg".

And bullet hells are descended from Space Invaders, but they are different gentes.
