Have had Stalker; Shadow of Chernobyl for 5 years on steam and have never installed/played lol

Seen it talked about a bit here and how apparently it can be a good game with mods..

So yeh can you tell me what mods for a good experience

...

Just check the /vg/ thread

Its a fantastic game

Consult this Starting Guide,
then see the /vg/'s huge Stalker General for more tips and links: Play in the release order. Start with no mods - only latest patch, OR get the full "Starter Pack" first; these contain bug-fixers and light visual mods that can help performance as well.
Leave big overhauls for later playthrougs. Avoid the "Complete" -mods. Always play on MASTER difficulty for best realism and atmosphere, and disable crosshair.

Don't give up in the beginning! The starting gear sucks ass and first area can be a bit boring.

>So yeh can you tell me what mods for a good experience
None. It's a great game out of the box, with patches. And those are auto-provided to you by Steam.

Just crank up the difficulty, disable crosshair, and man the fuck up. That's all you need to enjoy these lovely, atmospheric games.

First playthrough on vanilla is worth it. All I did was adjust the fov.

Got up to The Garbage with Complete and everything just felt stupid and funky. Restarted it. Having a blast.

Thanks bros, was under assumption the game was like unplayably broken w/o mods, i shall try playing without

>Got up to The Garbage with Complete
dear god!
people STILL use that shit? After all these years of us advising people to avoid that obsolete, causal crap ??

>was under assumption the game was like unplayably broken w/o mods
Yeah, that seems to be the ages old misconception. Probably originates from the early days, 9 fucking years ago, when the 1.0 was released and it WAS terribly buggy. The patches have since fixed the games to very enjoyable state.

If you however feel uncomfortable, just grab the Starter Packs / look up its mods separately. Stuff like switching FOV is pretty good practice.

JUST

but for real this game has aged like milk

you already posted this in the past thread.
the game looks, feels and plays like fine wine.

THIS GAME SUCKS!

You can't repair weapons and armors...

>needing to repair gear, when you're literally swimming in money and surplus loot
not to mention the sequels do have repair features.

Unique armors/weapons are useless , loooool

a standard G36 / any 9x39 gun + SEVA is all you ever need.

I just bought an extra gun or two, and ditched one when it started acting up.

I always get huge fps drops whenever I go near that tunnel in the beginning of the game on SoC. Is there anyway to fix that?

download the latest patch

what are your specs and settings?
Any PC made after 2008 should run the game flawlessly, especially in vanilla.

if he's on Steam, it's already patched.

stalker is for jew-nigger

>Stalker
>realistic gunplay
Yeah ok

My specs are fine it just seems whenever I go near a fire that casts shadows my fps just starts chugging.

more "realistic" than your typical hit-scan Cowadooteh game.

"fine" doesn't mean anything, nor did you state your settings, potential mods, etc.

STALKER games can still easily genuflect even high-end PCs if you goof around. You should at least keep the in-game AA off, because it doesn't work on DX9 and up anyway, and still saps your performance a ton.

I've got a 290 and 4690k. I'll try turning off AA.

Attaboy.
I've heard that STALKER games are kinda rough on AMD cards, but I've never had one, so I couldn't say.

One more thing, you mentioned fire causing performance drops? If you're using the ZRP mod, there should be an option to enable real-time illumination for fire, in the Modifier.exe it places inside the Gamedata folder. Try disabling that feature, and see if it helps.

Seriously, my i5 2500 + GTX 560ti has no issues playing vanilla at all high, 60fps, on 1920x1200, with forced AA. Your specs should be up to the job, unless you've cranked up some mod settings like crazy, or AMD seriously just sucks at this.

Here's a compilation of some good STALKER related tips and tweaks.
I'm off for now.

I've been playing for the last 2 hours and it has been a frustrating experience. When does is get easier? I'm at the part where you have to repel a bandit attack, and I've died countless times to each enemy encounter so far. I was told enemies weren't bullet sponges, but they need a whole clip of the starting gun or 2 shotgun shells to kill, which is great because the pistol handles like garbage. Not to mention I die quite a bit faster and the enemies seldom miss. The viper is a wonderful step up, but its a shame I only have 19 bullets for it. Yes I'm on master difficulty.

You've barely scratched the surface, but I can say that you're soon "getting there", gameplay and gear-wise. The garbage is merely a rough path between the start's "kindergarten" and the Aprogrom area, which'll be quite a test of your skills and an appetizer of things to come.

It kinda shocks me to hear that you're STILL clinging to that shitty Makarov and Sawnoff. I'd expect you to have some sort of automatic or two by now, and at least a Fort pistol.

Yeah, STALKER's starting gear is shit. That's a well known fact. However, even they CAN kill a (non-armored) human enemy with a single shot - as long as you hit them to the HEAD.
Pistols and 12ga buckshot have shitty reach and crap armor-penetration stats. Even the basic Bandit jacket is described to have kevlar padding, thus working as a crude armor against weaker firearms. Thus in the beginning, you should try to close in on your enemy, and aim to non-armored parts.

Doing the low-crouch (crouch + the "walk" button) really helps stability and performance when aiming, and also makes you almost completely silent to the enemy.

tl;dr: don't give up now! Once you hit the 100rad Bar, the sort of main "hub" of the game, you'll have a much more comfy and versatile base for yourself, and get access to much better gear and missions. Even before getting there, though, you should keep your eyes open for some high level loot.

I've tried to play this game before and I was able to trade and buy an smg with the starting fat guy, but he didn't have one this time so I haven't been able to find anything. I also went straight to the quest objectives as they show up. Should I look around a bit and try to find something better? Thanks for the encouragement btw

Also, does this game have mouse issues or is it my hardware? Every now and then it won't register my mouse clicks or movement for about a second (long enough for me to die ofc).

The stuff the merchants get depends on the events that have unfolded in the game world. Some stuff is borderline random. Better gear usually starts to appear as you progress through the plot-point missions, but you shouldn't bother with the fat-ass Sidorovich at the starting village anymore.

>I also went straight to the quest objectives as they show up. Should I look around a bit and try to find something better?
I would've recommended sticking around in the Cordon area and doing side quests & minor exploration before moving on, but kinda late for that now. You can find some pretty neat stuff just lying around, and those Stashes (to which you first need to find information about to get access to their loot) can range from something neat and little, to totally OP stuff.

>Also, does this game have mouse issues or is it my hardware?
The mouse controls in SoC are kinda floaty on purpose. They greatly toned that down in sequels.
Just type this into the game's console (press §/½ key):

cam_inert 0.1

About 4 hours in and still don't know what the those wierd ore chunks do, how do I actually use them?

Also what do you about the areas of radiation? Do certain suits come with rad res and night vision?

Well I realized I missed a few things in cordon so I went back, thanks again, I'm sure I'll figure it out

Hmm I've always thought that vanilla was ez but then again I've played Stalker games for over 1k hours in total so perhaps it is kinda off putting for newcomers. Make sure you got a decent wep on you and aim for the head. Take cover but keep in mind that AI in stalker is capable of flanking very well. You can avoid that by constantly changing your position as they always check the place you've been last seen.

Those are artifacts and if you click on them they'll have stat bonuses and drawbacks, you'll mostly sell them

oh btw have you installed the starter pack from the general?

Just how clueless rookie are you?
I'd recommend starting by reading that Starting Guide pic at .

Next, open up your PDA, and start reading on the lore and gameplay.

Like said, those are Artifacts. The main reason so many people are breaking into the Zone. The ones you usually find later are much more potent and useful. You can greatly improve your stats with them.

Yes, different suits have different protection stats, and higher ends suits (starting with the default STALKER suit, "Sunrise") have NVGs of different generation.

Here is the handy mod-choosing chart, that'll help ya find suitable mods for your needs, once you're done with vanilla games.

I personally recommend AMK1.4 for SoC.
