Good news...

Good news, Sup Forums! Sakurai decided to retire for unknown reasons meaning that Smash Bros is now without a director and Nintendo wants you to reboot it!

Nintendo has given you a mostly blank check to do what you want, but you'll still have to follow some rules.

>minimum of 16 characters, max size of 24 (this includes DLC)
>has to include modern characters/properties
>more than 2 villains
>minimum of 2 3rd parties (need to have strong relations to Nintendo)
>has to still appeal to a casual playerbase

Outside that, you have free reigns. So what do you do, Sup Forums?

I will add more Donkey Kong characters.

I might add more Fire Emblem characters, because I don't believe they have enough representation. They also sell so much and everyone knows who the anime swordsman are.

Nintendo would totally force:
1) Mario
2) Luigi
3) Peach
4) Yoshi
5) Ness
6) Captain Falcon
7) Link
8) Zelda
9) Samus
10) Pikachu

So like more than half is already done which sucks but whatevs

for 3rd parties
11) Banjo-Kazooie
12) Rayman
13) Ty the Tazmanian Tiger
Might be stretching it a bit but I'm the new sakurai so fuck you Ty is a character

For villains:
14) The hand/creator from Mario Maker
15) Ghost of Iwata-sama
16) Uhhh, something modern, uuuhhhh, Dio from JoJo's bizarre adventure? Fuck it, yeah him. And only him no other JoJo characters just Dio as a villain

Ok I'm done, just give me $300 million, a senior dev team, a mansion for us to live in and 8 years and you got yourself a classic video game

>It ends up delayed even more than 8 years
>beyond the first ten characters the rest are released far later

>start reading thread expecting game mode and design thoughts
>guidelines only cover rosterfaggotry
every time

Goku 4 smash

>has to still appeal to a casual playerbase
Blanket statement that covers that, but yeah I agree. Still, most answers would still just be "Melee HD without clones" because Sup Forums is creatively bankrupt.

Let's derail then.
You get to pick one new game mode for the new smash, what do you pick?

I'd like it if nes remix wasn't it's own game but just a game mode in smash, but now imagine nes remix but instead of the characters as they are you play as their smash version. Example, playing Zelda 2 but with the Smash engine and the playable Link model being the only thing visually like Smash, the rest just being plain Zelda 2.

>no clones
>no ganondorf
>No luigi

Shit game.

>no Falco
>no Young Link
>no Pichu

Good game.

They cancel each other out and we only have a mediocre game.

I still want an item tetris, or a sort of "controlled/timed item spawn" mode. Could be a neat idea and would teach players about stage control in a fun and casual way.

I remember having that -same- exact idea way back during the Brawl days, but with FE.

That sounds more like a gimmick that can be used for a fresh take on Adventure Mode. Not that it's bad, I actually kind of like that idea.

As for my own idea, how about a silly little board game type thing where you can use trophies as game pieces. Nothing like Smash Tour, just its own completely seperated thing where trophies have stats and fight in turn based shit like 100% Orange Juice or something. Some trophies might be supportive in this mode instead.

Not really a new mode, but another idea for trophies. If you obtain a trophy related to stages or game design from other games, you unlock that trophy to use as a prop or hazard in Stage Creator.

One fun bonus game idea could be a pinball like mode where it's just you and a ball in a vertically tall area with lots of bumpers, and you try to score points and prizes by hitting the ball. Once you hit it with a Smash Attack or past a certain percent, it becomes explosive by touching the floor, so you can still try to juggle it to score more, but at your own risk of losing a stock in your Classic run.

Here's a gameplay idea, add "wavedashing" as a simpler mechanic called "sliding" where you press an assigned shoulder button and any direction on the stick to simply slide in that direction and still be able to input anything else. Like all you gotta do is press L/R while dashing, and bam, instant forward wavedash. For shorter distance, move the stick diagonally downwards to the extent you need.

What's the downside compared to dashing?

Make Melee 2. Casuals don't actually dislike Melee, the only people who do are hardcore shills for Smash 4.

Include:
>the original 12 characters (Mario gets a Doctor Mario alt, plays identically to Mario, has pills as a cosmetic change)
>Peach
>Bowser
>Mewtwo
>Dedede
>Ice Climbers
>Zelda/Sheik (as one character again)
>Marth (with Lucina as an alt costume, plays identically to Marth
>Ike
>Pit (with Dark Pit as an alt costume)
>Sonic
>Megaman
>Simon Belmont (because we need some kind of newcomer and he's a popular request)

Classic Mode plays identical to 64/Melee/Brawl Classic Mode, and every character has their own Break The Targets stage. The game gets a few free updates that add maps (all characters are included in the game from the start), and to try to combat unofficial modding, a Nintendo Workshop is opened up where players can design their own stages on PC in a Brawlbox-sort of way and have it available for free download on the NX via an app. Especially high-quality popular maps may be officially added to the game to give the illusion of a large volume of content when really we're just stealing volunteer fan maps.

Who gives a fuck about characters. Fix the mechanics. Who thought making rolls unpunishable on reaction was a good idea!?!?

Make it where they can't input buffer a shield or anything during a roll animation and all more cool down on rolls. An extremely technical and smart player is just as good as someone who constantly spams rolls.

Make it where moves have normal cooldown if they miss but almost no cool down if they hit.

This games natural mechanics favor flow chart play styles by a handful of top tiers which possess spammable safe options. If the mechanics are changed the game will reward skill and punish predictability and failure.

Forgot to mention that this is a budget title, on sale for $30 with a smaller development budget. By focusing on advertising the FREE content made by fans, we can probably get away with the smaller amount of content like Mario Maker did, as long as the gameplay is good enough to please hardcore fans.

Adventure mode with procedurally generated levels

Screencap this

Mario Rolls behind you. You have 1/5th of a second to react and less then that to perform an attack. No matter what punishing rolls is a gamble and it is virtually impossible to do it on reaction. The player rolling is extremely safe and gets high reward from a guaranteed d-throw to u-air which will come after the roll.

who cares
smash isn't for you

It only lasts a certain distance as opposed to dashing which can be held for consistent speed to cover more ground. Not everyone's slide would be as fast as their dash either. The main purpose for sliding would be mostly to be able to use more attacks while in motion.

Roster:
Mario
Sonic
Luigi
Shadow
Wario
Knuckles
Bowser
Robotnik (eggman)
Yoshi
Tails
Peach
Amy

Donkey Kong

Panther C.

Cloud
Sephiroth

Viewtiful Joe (fuck marvel vs capcom)
Sylvia

Make them all not as fast and you have a deal. Attacking in motion is enough of a benefit for the ease of use.

Melee HD with online
That's it.

This.

Throw Ike in there too dawg

Just make Super Bash Sisters and call it a day.

That or redo Smash as a casual 3D fighter.

>melee is still good maymay
Ebin =^) 10/10 epic meme xD would meme again

>good news

Only massive faggots hate Sakurai.

If I were in charge, I'd be mostly concerned about the stages and items being fun to use without being too ridiculous.

That'd probably happen in balancing anyways. I'd want to try and keep the movement options Melee has, but trying to at least simplify them for the sake of ease. This is what Smash should be doing with its movement quirks instead of taking them away every iteration.

>casual 3D fighter.
Depends on how casual.

DoA casual?
Naruto Ultimate Ninja casual?
Naruto Clash of Ninja casual?

>Finally, after months of hints and hype, announce that said characters aren't getting in, but they WILL be part of the new promotional mobile app!
>Super Reject Bros!
>Gameplay is mindless screen tapping and lots of grinding
>Fans flip their shit
>Promise that playing the app and completing its content will unlock special rewards in the main game when it comes out.
>Fans start hyping that the characters in Reject Bros will be transferred over to the main game
>The special reward is unlocking Wii Fit Trainer

And the main game will just have the usual suspects in them and a few more anime swordsmen.

I get your frustration, but I'm afraid that's not very accurate.
Rolls are only a real pain to deal with if your character has got particularly bad option to deal with it.
You can go for a down smash or a dash attack (depending on roll direction) the moment you see a roll. You'll be sure of getting at least a light punish.
The fact of the matter is that rolls are only incredibly safe if you use them defensively, anticipating an attack.
Where I have to agree with you is that the roll mechanic hurts the game in some aspects. Some people think they can bypass playing footsies just by rolling away at safe range repeatedly, only expecting to punish wreckless run-ins. This leads to very boring matches where people just want to push your limits, which ends up requiring more emotional control than game knowledge or any other type of skill.
Personally I think this could be fixed by re-integrating the tripping mechanic exclusively for rolls. After 2 consecutive rolls you would get a 25% chance of tripping. 50% after the third, so on and so forth. They could use the same stalling system used for attacks for some movement options. The more you use rolls, the less invisibility frames you get.

>He can't punish rolls
Stop play for glory all the time and you will see that you can punish them

That's a lot more than 24 characters.

I wish we had another game like Smash 64. Punishing as fuck, long ass combos, high tension, slower (but heavier) movement. Fix shields and you have something good already.

>only five 1st party series get representation
>two of the five series are spinoffs of another of the five

SRPG mode with the sticker concept from Brawl.

>No matter what punishing rolls is a gamble and it is virtually impossible to do it on reaction.
You can punish rolls on reaction, silly.

>sonic without shadow
Imo i think all the mario characters should be paired up with sonic ones

Mario
Sonic

Luigi
Shadow

Wario
Knuckles

Yoshi
Tails

Peach
Amy

This is what makes the most sense also i think all 3rd party and 2nd party characters should at least get 1 rival

Where the fuck has Ridley been for instance?

Wheres crystal from star fox?

Donkey kong has no other friends besides diddy?

Also cloud is out of place without sephiroth thats a given.

They put bayonetta in so the next logical step is to put dante in.

As for the pokemon i think the starter pokemon should be the only ones and pikachu for old times sake.

Earthbound/Mother needs more representation like maybe porky or jeff along with lucas and ness.

...

I'd make an obscenely cute Smash Bros. It would have a pretty cartoony style and some characters, like Link would have all new designs. I'd also make characters heavier in general, though everyone would be way floatier. Fighters would also appear much bigger on screen. It probably wouldn't be tournament viable at all. Most characters would be physical attackers, projectile characters like Samus would be special.
I don't care about your rules, btw. This is a fantasy:
Mario, Luigi, Peach, Yoshi, Shy Guy, Bowser, Toad, Wario, Boo, Geno, Waluigi
Link, Zelda, Ganon, Impa, Ghirahim, Groose, Midna, Deku Scrub, Moblin, Tingle, Great Fairy
Captain Falcon, Pico
Ness, Paula, Poo, Lil UFO (i know that's especially dumb and don't care)
Pikachu, Jigglypuff, Bulbasaur, Squirtle, Mew, Mewtwo, Charizard, Riolu, Sylveon, Haunter, Starmie, Gloom
DK, Diddy, Dixie, Kritter
Samus, Zeta Metroid
Kirby, Dedede, Waddle Dee, Meta Knight, Dark Matter, Marx
Fox, Wolf, Falco, Slippy
Marth, Andy, Lip, Chibi Robo, Duck Hunt, Ice Climber, Squid Kid, Marshall, Dillon, ROB, Pit, Medusa, Takamaru, Mach Racer
Goemon, Banjo-Kazooie, Marina Liteyears, Firebrand, Moogle, Slime

Ok sorry I'm done

shit i forgot Olimar. And instead of Villager, Tom Nook, Isabelle, Rover, etc would each be skins for the same fighter
