What exactly is a "meme game"? I see it mentioned on here all the time but there doesn't seem to be a real answer as to what it is.
What exactly is a "meme game"...
Meme game is a popular game.
Numales here just use the term wrong.
>Smash 4 is more popular than Project M
>Sup Forums still calls Project M a meme game as an insult
Games I hate
It's moron speak for "I spend all my time on Sup Forums and don't know how to construct a sentence without using buzzwords I learned from there".
The term """""meme game"""""" is a meme, real meme games are things like goat simulator and minecraft as they have no objective other than to have fun. On Sup Forums it just means a game you don't like.
Usually fotm but it can be a game you dont like
A meme game is a game that invokes contemporary popular culture in order to sell units
It's a popular game an anonymous poster of this shitty board dislikes, can't understand its popularity and can't name reasons why hates it so he won't be called out a casual, so he resorts to memes
"meme" as an adjective
example usage: [x] is a meme [type of x]
1. overused, to the point where decreasing quality is a concern
>Unity is a meme engine
2a. abnormally complex or convoluted in its presentation, usage, appearance, etc. but still taken seriously by some portion of the public
>APL is a meme language
2b. abnormally simple, but widely popular
>Flappy Bird is a meme game
3. something of which value comes by secondary media/presentations/narratives; something which holds little intrinsic value (or diminished intrinsic value, in light of aforementioned publications)
>[commonly "Let's Play"ed / streamed game] is a meme game
4. something that is popular among the mainstream / 'normal person' crowd; especially if it sells by its name alone, is part of a sweeping fad, and/or shallow in depth
>COD is a meme franchise
>Dubstep is a meme genre
5. user doesn't understand the hype/interest surrounding it
>user hasn't enjoyed any games in [series], or the genre itself, so they're just meme games to him
(discouraged, weak/catch-all definition)
6. something user does not like; especially thematically
>stop posting your meme game
7. something having a notable quirk, gimmick, or stereotype

--literal usage--
10. something containing meme(s), especially one that uses them to sell itself; intensity increases with mainstream-ness of meme

(although syntactically correct, does not follow theme with other definitions)
11. something which spawned meme(s) or is a meme itself
>Portal is a meme game
>All Star is a meme song
This is not my oregano
Games that popular
It's popular so it's bad
anyone that uses that phrase throws away the value of their opinion
it means it's popular which means everyone hates it because Sup Forums is secretly a bunch of fucking hipsters
You have to go back in time to understand. When reddit was getting particularly popular and co-opting rage comics and other memes from Sup Forums, Sup Forums got mad (see popular music/games) and slowly started hating memes (even though memes make up the majority of Sup Forums threads and posts, then, now, and in the future).
Since Sup Forums has always been full of contrarian edgelords, the rise of SJWs and outrage culture brought about an alt-right revolution on Sup Forums and Sup Forums, which left the same people that used to complain about memes (while using them far more than any other website) constantly spouting things like "nu-male" and "meme game" because they lack the originality required to express their anger.
Thus Sup Forums
>popular games
Right cause people call CoD a meme game
Oh wait
fine, games that BECOME popular, especially those that do so rapidly or out of no where
Some people call STALKER a meme game just because it's very liked on Sup Forums and they can't get past Cordon.
It doesn't have to be AAA biggest seller of generation. Same with Deus Ex 1 and FEAR.
People call STALKER a meme game cause threads are filled with "LEL GET OUT OF HERE STALKER XD" or "CHEEKI BEEKI XD"
So there is no clear answer?
answers are memes
Meme games are titles that are generally driven by having an obsessive fanbase that don't know a whole lot about games, but are attached to that particular title or series due to factors outside of actually playing or experiencing the game for yourself.
For example, FNAF is a meme game because it's popularity is driven by MatPat's GameTheory videos on the series and streamers like Markiplier. NOT due to people actually playing and enjoying the game on it's own merits.
>namefag thinks his opinion is fact
A game someone does not like others liking because he does not like the game.
