To me:
>Pathologic
Followed probably by (in no particular order):
The Void
Silent Hill 2
Morrowind
Homeworld, Gothic 1
Shadow Of Colossus
STALKER
Fallout 1
Vietcong
Bastion
Kentucky Road Zero
The Witcher 1 and 3

Miasmata.

Thief desu

MM
DP
SMT IV

I found Miasmata to be in many ways mechanically ingenious, but never thought it to be very atmospheric.
I wish some games too inspiration from it's mechanics though. I think the movement system, charting mechanics and the monster A.I. could all be used to incredible effect if adopted with more polished execution and better, richer survival mechanics.

STALKER

ODST and Majora's Mask are almost never mentioned in these threads for some reason

>Majora's Mask
Came here to say this funnily enough

That's my desktop background.

Give it back!

Dunno about the best, trying to recall other games with great atmospheres that weren't already posted

MGS 2 and 3
Diablo series
WoW (fight me)
Crysis
SC(1)
Grim Fandango
BF Vietnam
Warcraft 3
NWN Mask of the Betrayer

>The Witcher
hell yes
TW1 has the best atmosphere out of games i have played

These are generally really good suggestions. I wouldn't say The Witcher is quite on the same level as some of the others though.

VTMB is another obvious one.

I would. And I would argue that VTM:B isn't. It would probably lead to pretty pointless argument though.
The issue I have with games like Fallout 2, New Vegas, Arcanum, VTM:B is while they are very well written, very witty, snappy, with some great dialogues and attention to detail, they all feel very artificial. Partially BECAUSE of the writing relying so much on wit and snappy quips, and a sort of post-modern deconstruction of the genres.
I would argue that chapter 4 in TW1, or the whole Bloody Baron and Crones segment of TW3 actually manages to create a fiction that incredibly well draws on the fundaments of what makes those folklore tales on which it is based. There are some deeply releable themes and iconography hidden in there. And that, combined with the actual attention to historical verisimilitude and absolutely balls-off-the-walls amazing soundtrack makes those some of the most memorable moments I've ever experienced in a videogame.

I actually had more fun with VtM:B or Arcanum than I had with any of the Witcher games, but they sure as hell haven't left that lasting impression in me.

Anno 1404

Dead Space 1
Dead Space 2

It makes me really happy to see The Void posted more often lately.

...

S.T.A.L.K.E.R

nothing else even comes close to this game atmosphere wise when modded

Yeah, that jumps to my mind as well. I cant remember the mods I was using, but whatever they were made the X-labs or whatever they're called way too fucking spooky.

Stalker and Gothic 2

Dark Souls
