How do I make friends in Maplestory these days? I am in Channel 1 Henesys but 98% of people are just AFK or having private conversations amongst their guild. No guilds are recruiting and I can't find any other hubs of activity besides Ch 1 Henesys. Help.
you guys honestly make me wanna play this grindy piece of shit, even though i know its only gotten worse
Sebastian Turner
I need friends too, guys. Literally 0. Started again a few weeks ago and every guild is boring
Jonathan James
Don't play reboot server. Every good thing you might hear about it is massively exaggerated or outright not true. It's the grindiest server of all too.
Chase Robinson
I used to make friends in PQ. Now PQ is a dead thing of the past
Alexander Garcia
so much worse....
Caleb Flores
>making new friends >in the modern mmo environment
Benjamin Morris
Any classic private servers still around?
Jacob Martin
Why was Elinia the most comfy of all the towns?
Isaiah Thomas
Before free market, people used to hang out at the bottom. That's probably part of it.
Isaiah Barnes
basilmarket used to have a booming guild listing feature where you could browse dozens and dozens of guilds trying to get members. That shit's gone, right?
Back when there were a lot of players, and a few places to train. Every map was packed, and every channel had people. It took a long time to level so there would be a lot of people training with you everywhere, not just speeding to a milestone and moving on.
Spent so many weeks in these trees be it slimes or evil eyes or whatever.
Logan Evans
Wasn't perion the town everyone would hang out at?
Me too The music in general was so great.
Nicholas Nelson
Every town. Perion was the most populated. Ellinia was 2nd. Followed by Kerning and then Henesys. As far as selling things, anyways.
John Adams
Seriously guys, what do I do?
Ch 1 Henesys is full of AFKers, and every other map in the game is basically empty. There are no guilds recruiting on any major forum or anything, and I have absolutely no idea how anyone is supposed to meet people in this game.
Ryder Parker
CC PLS
Samuel Rodriguez
Ah okay. I started playing it around 2005 but everyone was always saying perion is where they would go to.
I think what makes me sad the most is how no one does things together. My most favorite thing to do was kpq and lpq. Lvled up about 10 different characters through that.
Asher Stewart
It's not just Maplestory. No one does anything together in any meaningful way other than a 10 minute queued up dungeon (and never say a word during it) in any MMO that exists today.
Wyatt Bailey

i just looked at the old maple forums i used to go to
most of them are ghost towns with a couple of posts a week max. Kind of sad, actually

The people that play them changed as well as companies mediating that change by producing cash cows that extract as much money as humanly possible in the shortest time possible. People got burned out. Everyone's still making games that try desperately to get SOME money out of a dead community. No one wants to make a truly good old style MMO again, and even if they were wise enough to understand the benefit of it, they might figure the community is dead so there's no profitability regardless, and for the most part they're right.
Look at it this way too. From the mid 90s to 2006 the MMO community thrived completely uninterrupted. Around 2007 it started to slowly get worse. By 2012 it was a shell of its former self. In 2016 it's completely deserted.
It was around 2006 that normal people started getting into these hobbies of games and technology. The X360 was a MASSIVE success where games used to be nerdy they were now cool Call of Duties. Where gamers on the PC only consisted of enthusiasts, now everyone was getting a laptop as the common desktop was dying. Windows 7 came out. Everyone and their mother had a computer. These people got on social media, on online communities like neopets, and ultimately on MMOs, especially free MMOs.
Eventually they became the target audience and developers seeked to profit off them. Many years later, they all moved to the next big trend (smartphones and LoL) and the damage has been done. No fresh new fans. Old fans are grown up.
Aiden Garcia
that was me too I remember the channel 1 free markets used to be walls of @s as far as the eye could see
Austin Jenkins
Just play DFO fuck this shit
Parker Watson
Incredibly grindy. Once you reach like past 140 you spend all day every day killing trash mobs because the ONLY way to progress is to kill trash mobs (no other way to make mesos) and after a few hours of grinding, take those mesos (did I mention you have to loot EVERYTHING to get any real benefit) and put them through what is essentially a huge gamble to upgrade your equipment or more likely, downgrade it and have to pay money again to get it back up to its previous state (if you don't downgrade AGAIN), and THEN get even more money to upgrade again.
Ultimately, it's honestly harder to get really powerful in Reboot than it is in a normal server.
People think just because you don't have any trading or any NX-related advantages in reboot that it's automatically good. It's not.
It's only the ideal server if you are PLANNING on quitting after a short time. Then it's an OK experiment.
Brayden Thompson
Doesn't it have some type of stamina so you can't play for long?
Luis Peterson
This. Maple used to be grindy but it paid off because you gained permanent levels which were a HUGE deal. A level 60 was a god and a level 40 was just above average.
Reboot just has you waste hours of your life to get some mesos that you then blow up in a failed upgrade chance. Levels don't really matter. If you're 180 instead of 165 no one cares.
Nathan Davis
this is fmch1. Fucking chairs and shit that take up the screen.
Gabriel Peterson
Yes, it sucks.
Nathan Moore
first characters get a ton of handouts and stamina recovery even then like having 3+ chars should keep you entertained unless you have a real odd addiction
Lucas Gray
Did you guys see how they changed all the bosses? It's fucking shit one hit kill stage hazards everywhere. It breaks up the momentum severely. You could be the strongest motherfucker in the game and then suddenly you get randomly stunned for 1 second and a stage hazard randomly appears on you and you die.
It's not like a typical 2D game where you can dodge hazards by rolling or whatever. Animations in this game freeze you for so long and you got bullshit like random undispellable debuffs/stuns that force you to die in 1 hit right after.
Jordan Davis
You don't make friends in MMOs these days. People don't play them to socialize with randoms.
Noah Moore
Never again
Justin Morris
What the fuck is this shit?
Justin Wright
Social media happened and people realized the internet was an extension of real life where you only interact with real life people and play games with real life friends.
These threads always make me feel like shit because we'll never experience MMORPGs like they were meant to be again.
Evan Bailey
I liked maplestory for the endgame stuff. I don't usually play mmo's but the fact that dual blade and other certain classes had skills that looked and sounded amazing drew me in, and I played shit tonnes of it just to get there. It was pretty much the only mmo I tried out for that reason, and because my cousin played it.
When I look at other mmo's, their endgame doesn't seem appealing. Like that game that just died, tree of saviour. none of these mmo's have flashy and cool effects that I'd enjoy hammering and grinding my way through to get to.
Hudson Allen
Maplestory 2 FUCKING WHEN?!!
Samuel Young
apparently it's shit and flopping pretty hard so probably never
Kevin Butler
People have moved on. You have to keep trying the way you are or deal with it. It's never going to be like how it used to be, no matter how hard you try.
Austin Reed
>tfw maple bf stops talking and eventually removes you from friend list >1 week later he is having a wedding with one of your other friends
Evan Davis
You guys are the dumbest. The ONLY reason why there is no more social interaction is because YOU grew up. That's it. Nothing has changed. Things weren't better "back in my days". YOU just grew up. You're now more focused on getting to an end goal in the most efficient way possible. You no longer have any real life friends to play with. You aren't willing to randomly chat with strangers.
And then there's this faggot that secretly thinks he knows more than everyone else on the planet.
Hudson Foster
That's pretty much the opposite of what the game used to be about. End game was ridiculous grindy shit while leveling up to around 50 was the fun kind of grind.
Evan King
It's like 6:30 in the morning in kr right now, and this is FM1 (which no one even uses anymore because auction house)
Blake Thomas
...
Hudson Nelson
People weren't joking about chairs that take the whole screen I see.
Brayden Parker
Matter of fact, those chairs are actually pretty new to KMS, they originated in GMS. chairs in KMS have historically been pretty tame and laid back but they're just bringing in boatloads of event and gimmick chairs from other versions. Here's one of the bigger chairs I have, it counts up 1m dived for every like 20-30 seconds you AFK with the chair up. People already have it maxed out.
Anyway for people asking about MS2 in a global release, your best bet is to follow the chinese release right now. It just released there, to my knowledge. It's not doing so hot in KR but obviously it's still making money cause it's still running. Even if the game itself has shit for content people still seem to want to spend money on it for the customization stuff which is fine by me, their money.
Anyway, chinese release of MS2. It can be found under the name "MXD2" and it's hosted by qq. Probably as simple as a VPN and you could play, no need to set up or buy a KR account.
Christian Garcia
>tfw asians are having fucktons of fun and you can't be part of it >new MMOs coming up all the time >while in the west there are no new titles aside of a handful ambitious kickstarter projects trying to profit off people's dreams
Nathaniel Stewart
because mmos in korea are developed with the players in mind, and keeping the playerbase happy and playing. In the west, literally every ported game is designed with the goal of sucking the wallets of the westerners dry. You think i'm bullshitting you, but i'm honestly not. asians have quite literally resigned the west as a market unobtainable because of WoW, and instead focus on getting as much money as they can in the short term. Someone mentioned it in the thread, look at archeage. The difference between even the russian version and the western version is mind-blowing. So much p2w shit was introduced for absolutely no reason. Then there's the objective fact that westerners buy more gold from chinese bots that just goes to hurt the game's economy.
Parker Williams
is this game worth playing? how feasible is it to get to endgame content in a reasonable amount of time?
Wyatt Williams
Thing I miss most of all of Maple story was the chill as fuck boat rides from the main land to orbis.
and those fucking gargoyles.
Ryder Taylor
>see this thread >want to play maple again >remember the only decent active private server is boring-ass mapleroyals >remember official reboot server is also shit nevermind
Angel Robinson

Jace Johnson
>try playing a bit >reach level 60 in a few hours without entering a non-Henesys town The magic is gone forever.
Josiah Lee
why dont they just adopt a subscription model instead of introducing game-poisoning pay2win
Parker Foster
No. It's absolutely not, for the most part. More on this later. The only people who have any excuse to play it with the intention of not quitting at all are people who played since many years and don't want to let it go completely
Leveling is piss easy compared to years ago. Leveling to 160+ (an acceptable 'highish' level) can be done in like 3 weeks if you really put a lot of time. Maybe less. Maybe 2 weeks. Even at a highish level you won't be tremendously strong compared to other players. There are players like you who are going to be dealing say, 150,000 average damage per line of damage, and your main 1v1 attack deals 12 lines of damage, with the last 6 being reduced slightly, so let's say your average damage is 12 lines of ~120,000 damage. That's 1.44 million damage per attack at a highish level (1,440,000).
Then there are the people who are slightly funded, maybe played the game in the past and still have a character even remotely modern. They'll deal 1million damage per line, so 12million damage/attack.
Then you have what seems to be the growing community of people who are so dedicated to not quitting this game because they are absolute damage whores with several thousands of dollars' worth of equipment (trust me there are a lot of these kinds of people) hitting around 1~2.1 BILLION damage per line, so while you hit 1,400,000 damage, they are hitting 25,200,000,000 damage
The difference between players is so fucking enormous it's demoralizing.
William Smith
Continued
Now this means that a lot of 'endgame content' is going to be obviously NOT for you because you aren't going to have unbelievable damage. There IS still content for you as far as bossing and such goes, but as these things always work in Maplestory, the bossing/whatever you do that you CAN do is going to have little meaning. If you can kill that boss without a mega funded character, whatever it drops/gives isn't going to get you ahead in the world. You'll just be doing it purely for quests or whatever.
Now if you want to completely ignore every other person in the game (for the most part) and pretend they don't exist. If you are willing to read things like quests, especially all the curated story based ones these days, you can actually have fun. If you just want to rush to high levels and do endgame stuff, you won't have fun. The leveling process can be pretty fun if you do the big story quests and such. Try to avoid doing things halfway. As it is, it's so fucking easy to not do quests and never do them again. There are WAY too many quests not worth doing that just stack because the game used to be designed so that it takes you easily 20x as long to level as it does now, so you quickly skip them involuntarily and later they're not remotely worth it for anything but curiosity.
Nathan Morris
What's mapleroyals and why is it bad?
Isaiah Edwards
a lot of this is wrong or basically preference this person probably played on some guild that was spamming in ul'dah with 700 active members, that shit is pointless
Samuel Taylor
because subscription models don't make money, for the extreme majority of games. And the p2w, like I said, is only for the west, because people in the west will actually pay for it.
even b2p is extremely risky for publishers nowadays. There's such an enormous amount of f2p games that doing anything but f2p yourself is just shooting yourself in the foot. Why pay money to play a game that's not part of an established brand when you can just play another game that's very similar, for free?
People in the west are literally the most cancerous online userbase there is. But we're also the largest userbase. So everyone has to try to appeal to us if they want to succeed on a massive scale. And even then, it's fully understood by both developer and publisher that games won't be a big success in the west, which is why they launch riddled with bugs and translation errors. If you put too much effort in, you get bitten in the ass because no one fucking plays your game and you threw this money away.
Meanwhile if you put in no effort, you occasionally get a few whales who will dump tens of thousands of dollars into your game, and then you just milk those. It's the same ideology that mobile games were founded on. Harness the small minority that will dump money, andm ilk the FUCK out of them.
If you ever want to experience a real, unfiltered MMO where no one's trying to constantly grab at your fucking wallet, go make an account on pmang or nexon KR, and play one of the games there. Kart rider is a great example. There was no way they could monetize it in the west, which is why it never launched. I'm not even shitting you. Go read the investor reports, available to the public, for like 2007, 2008, and 2009. They constantly talk about it and why it's not being brought over despite the userbase clamoring for it.
Jackson Torres
one of the last private servers before all the bullshit, v62
it's not BAD, it's just a bit cliquey and certain classes are utterly broken
also going priest was a mistake because everyone demands perfection when i'm just trying to play a fun game. they're in high demand but people treat you pretty shitty. though i suppose this can be said about any support in any mmo
Kevin Brooks
thanks for writing this up user, appreciated. I still may play and do just as you said, ignore everyone.
Evan Sullivan
>Kart rider is a great example. There was no way they could monetize it in the west, which is why it never launched. I'm not even shitting you. Go read the investor reports, available to the public, for like 2007, 2008, and 2009. They constantly talk about it and why it's not being brought over despite the userbase clamoring for it. It literally came over along with Audition and then Kart Rider closed down like four months later with Audition following it a year or so after that.
Anthony Sanchez
No, kart rider had a 3 month long open beta to gauge interest
Audition had a beta, then launched, then after 2 years of not updating it because licenses in the west are stupid fucking expensive for songs, they sold it back to t3, who now run it through their attempted platform redbana.
You might be thinking of the facebook kartrider that came over to the west, I guess? Either way, literally go look at the IR reports.
Jose Stewart
You are wrong.
Daniel Perry
You should play on the Scania server. Every other normal server is less populated to the point where it's too empty. A complete ghost town. Even if you don't do much with other players, it's still good to have the option. In the current game's state people aren't going to be crowding training spots or anything like in the old days so you're good.
Reboot server is different. A half assed attempt by Nexon to claim the game is old school again in a server with limitations. Like you can't trade or anything. The only way to get equipment is to find it from monsters, which sounds good but then the drop list is super limited based on your level and such, and eventually later on it turns into a nightmare of having to grind for hours because of the equipment upgrade system later on. Leveling is also even faster there. I think it's the most populated server now. Maybe start in Scania and if you want to make a new character try it out in reboot and see how that goes.
Grayson Richardson
>You might be thinking of the facebook kartrider that came over to the west, I guess? Nah, I was thinking about the open beta. I could have sworn it was properly released for a short while after the beta.
Justin Jackson
No.
Ethan Rivera
Nope, that's why there was a ton of outrage in the nexon forums. They did an open beta, then "It's coming soon!" then a year later nothing, then a few years later they did that shitty facebook game to rub salt in the wound.
Meanwhile in korea they now have a flying kart-type game, think diddy kong racing sorta, and a third person shooter that's really cool. But they're so arcadey and simple that you can't sell shit without breaking the game entirely. You can't sell carts, you can't sell exp boosts because they'd be useless, and a bunch of other stuff. It's not really suitable for the west.
Luke Brown
how is it monetized in korea then
Wyatt Reed
They couldn't even create a skin change system or anything? Hell, before 2x EXP came out in MS cosmetics were literally all you could buy.
Matthew Gomez
...
Jeremiah Young
I quit before big bang but 180 meant you could PB and 160 meant you could Horntail(as a DrK or Priest at this level). They were pretty important thresholds if you wanted to be included in those runs.
Brayden Adams
Cosmetics. But the west doesn't spend as much on cosmetics. It sounds dumb, I know, but it's true when you look at it from a lens outside of the scope of valve and blizzard. Try to find a single game that's successful, and has only cosmetic items for sale in it's cash shop.
Maple 2 is a good example actually. It's literally floating on cosmetics sales, because you can make your own cosmetics and make them look however you want, then also sell those templates to other people in the cash shop.
Samuel Hill
How is this game nowadays? I loved it back in 2011ish. Do you have to play a private server for it to be anything like back then, I.E. WoW?
Ethan Scott
yeah, 2x literally only existed in GMS until EMS came out. not even CMS and TMS had 2x until after big bang. KMS still doesn't have 2x coupons for sale, you can't buy them. And they only got put in GMS because the game was failing without the aid of it. It's the same reason they never put in permanent cash shop items when literally every other version had them. It was too expensive, and they weren't making jack fucking shit to be able to justify that. Now they have permanent cash shop items but you have to roll them randomly through a gachapon styled system, so it gets tons of money from players.
Chase Smith
Horntail isn't relevant anymore. Some people straight up FARM pink bean.
Thomas Mitchell
reboot sounds garbage, I'm installing the regular game now. Will go on Scania, thanks again
Elijah Anderson
You can solo HT at 170ish now and it's worthless, PB at around the same level if your gear is good. Most of the stuff around PB's level can be done with 300k range. Zakum is killed solo at like level 40 now, and it's used mainly for the infinite supply of Power Elixirs, Elixirs, and Reindeer Milk/Sunset Dew drops that get you a mil for both runs with the RM and SD while the Elixirs you just use up since they're worthless now.
William Brown
Jesus fucking christ what happened
Ryder Gonzalez
Progression. You can't have the same fucking boss forever. Imagine if WoW never moved past molten core.
Jayden Powell
Don't worry. The current endgame is relative to pre-BB PB, a.k.a nobody has defeated him boss and probably won't until 5th job is released in GMS.
Mason Ward
>Ywn get killed by balrog on the ship again
Michael Morris
They needed to advance the game and not just stick to the past and three whole bosses for the rest of eternity with shit bosses being the rest of the things you fight.
Zakum is basically a potion farm and you don't need to do the shitty jump quest to access him on top of him being on all channels(Though still only twice a day) Horntail's Necklace is like the only thing you run him for and you only need to do it once for the necklace, no one bothers throwing eggs on it since Anniversary items instantly outclass it once they come out and they hand them out like candy. Pink Bean requires that entire shitty questline to be complete(I think they either toned it down or removed it though thankfully) and needs about 250k+ range to actually solo which takes a pain in the ass of a time to get to as a F2P guy.
Chaos Root Abyss bosses are basically the new Zakum/HT/PB in terms of people needing to queue up to fight for them unless they literally hit the damage cap, with Gollux, Cygnus, Magnus, Chaos Hilla, and one of the newer ones.
There's the new hotness, Lotus, that literally can't be beaten unless you hack since the damage it deals is absurd, there's potion cooldown, hitting max lines still isn't enough to beat it since you need multiple people hitting max lines to maybe think of killing it, and you only get one or two tries at him a day. Dorothy is basically his baby sister in terms of how bullshit she is, and you have to fight her either solo or with two people I think, and you are not only timed but you have to go through 50+ levels of what are essentially horde battles and jump quests.
Here's an example of the shittiest damaging class fighting one of the harder bosses in the game(His equips likely cost thousands): youtube.com/watch?v=PUCUOvTntvM
That's the current unbeatable boss just released in GMS. Note they're all maxing their lines and doing nothing. youtube.com/watch?v=bQRxUwLnZzk
Kayden Bell
>new hotness >3 year old boss lel
5th job is out, removes the damage cap, and the new boss, lucid, is still nearly unbeatable with the best players in the game. Here have a video of a full team dealing billions of damage a line and beating her literal seconds before the clock runs out.
Since I couldn't fit it, they also made boss fights way more annoying. Potion cooldowns with bosses that not only 1/1 but seduce you which basically requires a pet to heal you with the auto healer, everything has damage reflect with tells that are extremely hard to see and distinguish outside of someone like Hilla or Von Leon, the areas usually have some gimmick to make fighting them even harder like Gollux one-shotting you if a rock reaches him, platforms you have to climb up on to actually hit the fucker but it's just small enough to knock you off and the rope is super long, and so on.
The bosses are way more involved than in pre-BB, but a huge chunk are essentially unreachable to F2P people. The highest point you're going to hit without years and years of market farming and grinding or just dumping like $5000 on the game for equips is probably Chaos Hilla or Chaos Pink Bean.
I always got the names mixed up, thanks for the correction.
Chase Kelly
Also dorothy is a solo boss, and the challenge from her comes from the entire 50 floor dungeon you do before hand which is jump quests, trivia floors, minigames, and a bunch of fun shit. It's only her and the floor before her that are even remotely bullshit.
