Building PC

I like playing video games.

Specifically on my PC.

I am about to drop $1200 on parts for a new PC.

Does Sup Forums think I am retarded for this build: pcpartpicker.com/list/JQPNyf

That's definitely not the image I chose. What the fuck is this nonsense?

It's fine but I don't get why you don't get the unlocked i5 instead of a 3.3 locked

Going on 9 years now. Do I still get to keep my newfriend status?

What is the main differences I will get if I get the unlocked i5? I am fine with spending the extra money since it's not much more, but I wasn't sure if it would even be noticeable or worthwhile.

may want to get more hard drive space, even with 3 TB shit fills up real quick

I'd really suggest going for an SSD. It really does improve boot time and application load time enough to be worth the money. At least get a 250gb one for a boot drive, if not a 500+ one for games. I've had problems with seagate before, but I'm sure they are fine. Other than that it looks fine. Welcome to the master race.

Unlocked means you can overclock it but if this is your first time building a pc don't even bother.

Yeah, I'm sitting on 250gb on my current harddrive, and I'm having serious space issues. I am not smart enough to figure out how to have an SSD as just a boot drive either, so I was just going to go for a large capacity HDD. I set a $1k limit for this build, and I've already gone over, so I dunno if I can justify getting something more expensive.

It's my second time. First time was like 8 years ago though, and I just got the very basics.

You're getting a Z170 chipset mainboard so you might as well get the unlocked one if you want to put in the research and effort to overclock. The CPU cooler seems to be good enough for it as well although you can always go higher with the double towered Noctua one.

Is it really worth it? Buddy of mine had a friend overclock his cpu. Before it eventually fried, he said he didn't really see any difference. Maybe it was just done wrong though.

2006 is when things started going downhill, so yes.

>autism time
fuck off

Really depends on your chip luck.
I have a i5 4670K with a stock clock of 3.4 and can barely overclock it to 4GHz without running into thermal issues despite having a NH-D14 but I've read of people who could overclock theirs up to 5 GHz.
A 6600K should be able to get up to low to mid 4GHz just fine I think.

Also it should not fry at all if you do it properly and test for stability and temp and don't just put in randomly high voltage values.

HIROMOOOOOOT

Click the image. It will show the one I actually chose.

Yeah, I don't think he knew what he was doing. Alright, I've updated to the 6600K instead. Dunno if I'll ever overclock, but it's only an extra 20 bucks.

DO NOT get the new 1000 series from nvidia. The low end cards hit 120°C under stress and the high end cards are fucking exploding.

Haven't heard of that. Doesn't seem to be a trending topic anywhere I look either. Is this from person experience, or can you cite where you're getting this info?

Looks like it's EVGA specifically.

It's not just EVGA, there's also reports of it happening with MSI cards.

Get the 6600k and overclock
Get a water cooler
Get an SSD
Get 16 gb ram so you can ramdisk and mod the shit out of games that hog ram
You don't need anything remotely close to 750W, 550W is fine

>2016
>optical drives

>amdfags are buying 1070s and setting them on fire to make nvidia look bad
is there anything more pathetic nvidiabros? we can't let AMDfags get away with this, remember the pci-e power draw problems. we can't let nvidia lose marketshare!

>Get the 6600k and overclock
Done

>Get 16 gb ram so you can ramdisk and mod the shit out of games that hog ram

I have 8gb in my current rig. Gonna rip that out and add it to my new one.

>2016
>optical drives
That's what everyone says, and then they realize too late that they need one. It's 15 bucks, I don't really give a shit. I still get music CDs as gifts now and again, and I'd like to be able to rip them onto my computer.

So what's the alternative? It still seems like it's a rare thing, but I suppose I don't want to risk it. What is a better, similar-priced video card?

wtf 1200$ and only a 1070?
And only 8gb ram?

I live in germanistan and i can get that pc for about 900€. Always thought the prices in the USA are lower.

Don't buy a PeeCee. Srsly buy a PS4 Pro you will get so much games next year. PeeCee has zero good games ZERO.

>buying noctua for no reason
stock cooler is fine.
>8gb ram
retard
>seagate
retard
>no ssd
retard
>500 dollar video card
retard

There's plenty of 1070's that aren't EVGA

>So what's the alternative?
EVGA and MSI are just manufacturers. Basically, they buy the schematics and build their own cards with it. The issue may not be with the card itself, but with these two manufacturers. To reduce your risk you can simply buy from a different manufacturer, like Gigabyte or Asus or someone else.

Or you can buy a previous generation, like the 980Ti. It won't perform AS well, but it's less of a risk - both in the hardware failure department, as well when it comes to running games. Games not developed on the new architecture may have issues, which could include anything from framerate dips to regular crashes.

Or you can promote competition and buy AMD and take your chances with their new 400 series.

>PeeCee has zero good games ZERO.
Only if you hate it when video games are actually difficult

Fixed it dumbass

Just buy one.
