I never got the the story/humor because the core gameplay is godawful. Read a plot summary.

So the gameplay is different than Earthbound/Mother 3? Or do you just not like that gameplay

I guess I don't normally like that gameplay but managed to put up with it because Earthbound and Mother 3 were so good overall. Mother 1 is painfully difficult and encounter rates are so high that traveling anywhere is a chore.

Yes its the best game in the series.
But the story is deep as in you really need to pay attention to the themes and shit, mechanically is nothing special though so if you cant appreciate meta storytelling dont bother

Apparently Mother 1 is very grindy and not fun, especially if you don't start with it, but there's a neat romhack and translation that helps with that

It adds an item called the easy ring which increases gold and exp and reduces the encounter rate, but it's actually balanced to a point where the game is still challenging, just not grindy

I never had to grind, this modern generation is too impatient when it comes to getting rewards in a game.

If you want more after finishing 2 and 3, sure.
It's a pretty tough game, Mt Itoi is a real pain in the ass but I thought the final boss was worth suffering through it.

It's a pretty good game. Play Mato's M1+2 translation, it's better than NoA's translation. Don't listen to anyone who says you need to grind. Grinding is NOT required, but the encounter rate IS rather high.

It's your typical NES RPG except with an actually interesting story.
Massive overworld, lots of grindan, and occasionally the enemy balance is way off.

>lots of grindan
This meme again
Grinding is not moving from one spot looking for enemies on purpose
In M1 you never have to do that because the encounter rate is so high as long as you defeat all enemies you encounter you will be fine
And use the breadcrums holy shit so many people fail to use them properly.

>In M1 you never have to do that because the encounter rate is so high as long as you defeat all enemies you encounter you will be fine

But that's exactly the problem. You don't solve the grinding problem by making enemies swarm you like flies to a turd.

Its not grinding user its just a high encounter rate
Get your terms right.

even if you use optional patches like more exp and less battles, mother 1 doesn't have a lot to offer if you've already played earthbound.
honestly earthbound almost feels like a mother 1 remake.

Why do people complain about grinding in this game? I just hit FF on my emulator then select auto battle. It actually helps because you end up really high leveled

It has a lot to offer, tons. But you need to know how to look for it.

M1 is way way better than earthbound story wise.

It's a grindy chore, the entire game, play it with a patch to double the exp/money.

Other than that, I think it's a very fun adventure, it's the most cohesive and coherent world of the 3 games, but unlike the other two games it's not as humorous, and the atmosphere is very moody and dark compared to the other games, which is actually something I like.

There's not a whole lot to the story, but the build up to the final showdown with Giygas is probaly the highlight of the series, people always remember Giygas and the Masked Man fight, but this one is the one that stuck to me the most.

It's a good game if you can get over the grinding, hell, I wouldn't mind if you used a exp/money 4x patch if it were to make the game less tedious.

I like the game a lot more than EB or M3. You're not nearly as railroaded; you can potentially do things hugely out of order, skip entire party members and other stuff like that. I beat the Wii U port without Ana in my party, using only Ninten and Lloyd all the way through.

>opinion
I for one found it cool that ur foe was attacking from random points in time rather than just being an adopted nephew to him but meh.

>not going Ninten only for the final part.
What it like being casual scum man?

I think it's a pretty good game but unless you love famicom rpgs or the mother series I imagine it might be difficult to get into. It has a fair share of bullshit like over powered enemies, annoying dungeons, and expecting you to understand vague information. It still is very charming and a nice little game. I recommend the patch that puts Tomato's translation in the NES version, best version in my opinion.

If ypu have a question feel free to ask.

It's pretty good.

Fuck it, you guys want art?

I will never accept Mato's new translation, or the Mother 3 re-write patch that came after, I don't know why but I feel like you shouldn't re-write history like that, I much rather figure out what the Demiforce translation says than have things spelled out for me

His translation last I checked is just fixing errors that someone else made in said translation process though

Please tell me you at least speak Japanese? If you haven't played the game because instead of mato's you want nintendo to shit out a terrible translation then you're fucking crazy.
No. Tomato retranslated the game entirely to make as accurate as possible. Sandhop basically has said there was a lot of stuff he changed simply as he found it "dumb". I'm sure he worked under hard conditions but still.

The original Japanese release of Mother 1 doesn't even have a run function, the american team added that in along with the expanded ending since the end credits in the original version rolled in right after Giygas flies off.

Mato's not a writer, you can see all over his Mother 3 translation the bizarre attempts to properly translate Itoi's humor, I'm pretty sure we're not losing anything in the original translation, maybe a few jokes but that's it.

I'm sorry but I'm confused, are you arguing for or against my point?

I don't care about Mato's translation, I value the fan-effort but I value more the integrity of the people who worked to localize the game only to end up never being released in the first place, I respect Mato more for translating Mother 3 and pointing out the regional differences between EarthBound and Mother, but I don't know if I would ever want to play a different translation of it, maybe for fun, but I wouldn't reccomend it to a person, it'd be like reccomending a fan-edit of a famous movie rather than the actual movie itself
