While I find the idea of a haunted sand castle really fucking dumb, the evolved form is basically just a living quicksand monster which suffocates it's prey by trapping them

And thats what makes them good rather than dumb

Which is a good thing, it makes Pokémon seem more like actual creatures in an ecosystem rather than just cute animated monsters. They actually kill and eat eachother. All the other games tried avoiding that subject.

The concept of a haunted sandcastle itself is flawed. There's nothing scary about a ghost that just sits there on a beach in broad daylight.
