My friends and I do fight nights that have all manner of fighting games. You'll get new blood in just doing random shit, loudly churning for 360s, mashing etc. Once you realize they have no game plan and are being random you can punish.
I don't even subscribe to 'Smash isn't fightan' since I believe it is. It's just a very non-traditional fighting game.

Just because it only updates the screen every 1/60th of a second (one frame) doesn't mean that nothing is happening between those 1/60ths of a second. The loop continues tons of times between them. Each of those loops looks for input.

Video games can take inputs in under 1 frame, but SFV ignores inputs that happen too fast on purpose. This is a common practice in fighting games.
yeah you're doing it wrong, you have to tell your body to hold down back and press forward, then kick, if you put the kick before the direction, any input goes, and sometimes, especially on arcade stick, you get a diagonal up and so on. Very common practice and mistake for charge characters.

Smash is better than pretty much any fighting game.
Fighting game inputs are antiquated and really don't serve any purpose other than to make the game frustrating. Depending on the game, anywhere from 50% to 80% of the challenge in playing a fighting game comes from accomplishing the inputs rather than any sense of tact, strategy or reaction.
Smash has shown you can very easily make an in-depth and fun fighting game without hiding the "throw fireball" command behind three to twelve appropriate button presses. Even RTS games don't make you memorize dozens of inputs, and they're several times more challenging than any fighting game.
