Mostly because it changed the game a lot.
It has classes and building is not really that important when maps have a lot of pre-constructed buildings. The WWI, trench idea is kinda ruined.
And then there are things such as running, but some people like it.

Personally I don't mind much, but climbing fights were much more intense back when you didn't have it.
Anyway, auto-climb and all other options are OPTIONAL in the newer versions. They are literally better in every way.
