Why is this game rated so highly? It's not terrible but it is pretty mediocre. Everything is so bland and there's so many enemies despite to fight for virtually no reward besides crafting materials that you never use.
Why is this game rated so highly? It's not terrible but it is pretty mediocre...
Because it's babby's first crpg. Many people who liked it haven't played older rpgs.
This game would be so much better if they actually left in you know things like finding more powerful equipment making your exploration actually have meaning rather than having you upgrade the same boring weapon you've had since the beginning of the game
The writing is legitimately great, and that's what's most important in an RPG.
nostalgia is a hell of a drug
people are desperate enough for real crpgs again that even mediocre games are being praised; Not one of these kickstarter games is anywhere close to as good as the gold box or IE games but with garbage like skyrim and inquisition being the only alternative, they seem a lot better than they are.
>The writing is legitimately great, and that's what's most important in an RPG.
I really can't take people like you seriously. If this is great writing for you, you've probably never picked up a book before. It's shit even for video game standards.
>there are no gods
>but there are these beings that have the power to control the world and the events that take place in it
who wrote this shit
Name your top picks for videogame writing.
I hopebyou realize the standard is Mass Effect, The Witcher, Bethesda Fallout, and "..." JRPGs.
In no particular order:
MOTB
Legacy of Kain
Jew Sex
The first Bioshock (None after that)
KOTOR 2
Max Payne
Planescape Torment
I can appreciate both simple and complicated stories as long as they're presented well. Warcraft 3's also one of my most favorite stories even though I recognize that it's full of camp and cliches, because it was colorful and presented really well. PoE's story is neither simple, nor complicated, nor presented well. It's just a mess.
I just beat the game and I have no fucking clue what half of the shit in this game is, there are too many names and they are all weird as fuck.
Some good picks, some bad; I really don't see how you find it so bad though. You need to compare it to its contemporaries, not classics of the genre.
Compared to Dragon Age and The Witcher it's fucking Chaucer.
I already told you.
It's not a very compelling story and it's told very terribly. 90% of it is exposition and the rest is a villain that has incomprehensible goals until the last quarter of the game, when it starts to make sense, but until then it's just a daze of backstories and events from the past and "visions" that you're told tax your body and mind but is never shown.
>You need to compare it to its contemporaries
I am comparing it to its' contemporaries. And it's fucking terrible.
>Compared to Dragon Age and The Witcher it's fucking Chaucer.
If you think it's better than them then you're sorely mistaken. Dragon Age Origins and all three witcher games blow it out of the water. They might be simpler stories, but they are told so, so much better, and that's what matters in the end. You can have the most complex, brilliant spiel in the world and it'll be worse than a short, simple story if you fail at presenting it. For example, the star wars prequels would be really good if George wasn't incompetent, and that's how I feel about PoE's story.
Ah: you're judging it solely on the main story.
I think you miss the point, again, of an RPG.
...
I think you also forget what game you're playing because PoE ONLY has a main story. The sidequests are terrible and the characters are all flat and forgettable. Do I have to remind you of the mage that chimped out because one man dared have sex with his niece and went on an author's tract? The only extensive content PoE has is the backstory and the "world" that they kept jerking off about and that they kept telling us about nonstop in lieu of telling a story and the majority of the population of the world were the gold npcs with fanfiction backstories. Not only that, but even the only thing that it it does consistently, the exposition and description, is filled with repetition and redundant phrases, because for some reason I need to be reminded of Thaos' unwashed hair everytime he shows up or Pelaniggeria's feathery vagina.
Also, like said, every dialogue choice is 1. Yes. 2. Yes. 3. Sarcastic Yes. and 4. No (Yes).
If you think that's better than Dragon Age Origins, then I'm afraid you're wrong.
The dialogue in the game is terrible, conversations give you different options but they don't fucking matter because they all lead to the same outcome 99% of the time. I miss when crpgs actually had consequences for the choices you make in conversations. Everything about the design in PoE seems so shallow and safe so that nobody misses out on anything by roleplaying a specific type of person.
PoE is mediocre in any regard, but definitely not bad.
Tyranny on the other hand is actually kinda crappy.
The combat is literally like putting an entire nintento 64 of diarrhea in your mouth
I have higher standards of writing than you, yet found Pillars' characters interesting. I feel you're trying to fit with Sup Forums.
>what is context
The PC has already engaged Eder in revealing his past. It would be incredulous and immersion breaking to suddenly be a dick or tell him to shut up and fuck off
>every dialogue choice is 1. Yes. 2. Yes. 3. Sarcastic Yes. and 4. No (Yes).
That's Fallout 4.
So why even call it an RPG and give you dialogue option if your character is going to say "Yes" either way?
>it's a Sup Forums hates pillars thread
yawn
Because it would be completely fucking ridiculous to have a conversation option after you've pushed for someone to talk more about a topic that says "Actually I don't give a shit, fuck off".
This sort of stuff has been in every RPG honestly, either that or they just have a "Goodbye" option in every dialogue choice.
kana and sagani are the only characters from the base game with stories that aren't completely fucking generic
new to crpgs, are there any I can play a convincing berserker?
Bonus points for dialogue changes
>character is going to say yes anyway
Let's get this straight first, the MC is not saying "yes", they're asking about Eder's past.
As already said it would be fucking stupid to just say "fuck you, i don't care" after the player has already engaged in him and shown interest in it.
>why even call it an RPG
I don't know about you but I go through RPGs multiple times playing and speaking different ways. Why does there need to be a universal, bland response? What's bad about being able to choose the response that would best fit the personality I want my character to have?
No, it wouldn't, that's what's called fucking roleplaying. There's no "Okay, then, nevermind." option because they don't want you to miss out on their content.
No.
I highly doubt you have higher standards if you've liked Pillars of Eternity or its' characters.
>I feel you're trying to fit with Sup Forums
And I feel like you've neither played another crpg before or read a book before.
What fucking roleplay would result in you pushing a character to open up, and then when they do, you go "Actually I didn't want you to open up lmao"?
Or are you just arguing that because it's not an option regardless of if it makes sense, the writing is shit? Because then no game has good writing, there's always limits.
Closest would be ones with a lot of [Attack NPC] or [Intimidate NPC] options, but there aren't a heap of those.
I don't get why people choose to nitpick and post the same dialogue interaction in every PoE thread. You do realize there are more interactions than this in the game right?
Guess I shouldn't have expected much else, this is Sup Forums after all.
>Character doesn't want to talk about it
>No option to back off
And there is the problem. Now shut the fuck up and stop focusing one exactly one thing because you won't convince me the game's story and dialogue options aren't a pile of shit. I still remember the start where no matter what you said lead to the exact same thing.
everytime I ask someone who hates pillars what a better crpg is they always just yell at me BALDURS GATE, I feel like people who hate pillars are just butt mad baldur's gate fans.
(BG is better, but if Pillars is so shit there must be OTHER crpgs that are better)
Because it's ok when Obsidian does it. Alpha Protocol is another game that would be called out for the trash it is if it were any other dev, but because it's Obsidian Sup Forums sucks it off like an underrated gem.
But he didn't not want to talk about it, it's not like he was defensive, he just said it was a bit embarrassing. Have you actually spoke to people in real life user?
And the dialogue options were generally fine, literally every RPG has some that are just flavour options, but in PoE those flavour options actually impacted your characters traits, which was a cool idea.
That being said, you're obviously just some nostalgia-fag who's obsessed over how perfect older crpg's were and refuses to admit that newer ones might be okay too, which is supported by your completely unrealistic ideas of what constitutes realistic roleplaying options in a game. So yeah, no point really trying to have the discussion with you.
You've pretty much hit the nail on the head. Baldur's Gate is good (and better than PoE) but that doesn't make PoE a bad game. PoE isn't a bad game. The majority of mainstream reviewers, independent reviewers and gamers have given this a positive response. I've played and beaten it 2. Once a couple months after release and once with the 2 DLC expansions. It's great.
Sup Forums just loves to be contrarian as fuck and force their opinion as fact. It's laughable.
If you want to try other good cRPGs you can try Underrail, the original Fallouts, Wasteland 2 or Arcanum. Hell even Icewind Dale is pretty good.
arcanium looks annoying, is it really fun
I also heard wasteland 2 has really bad progression
Except that's wrong. I've never played baldur's gate 1 or 2 and I disliked PoE. Also all I ever see you people when someone insults PoE is scream "BACK TO CODEX" so it's really hypocritical of you to say that.
