Want to play my first final fantasy

>want to play my first final fantasy
>store only has ff13
>eh, how bad could it be?
>blown away by everything
>invest hours into completing the game
>hell yeah that was satisfying
>find out after the fact that the game is reviled by the gaming community
>w-well I'm no pleb! I'll just play all the other final fantasy games and I'll totally like them more!
>can't even be bothered to finish any of them, only ff7 comes close
>tfw I'm everything wrong with the gaming community

Pull the trigger

>tfw Sazh was the only good character but he was the worst party member to use against everything but one enemy

>even when someone's first FF is fucking 13 it still winds up being their favorite one
Jesus christ, what is it about Final Fantasy that does this?
FF9 was my first one and while I like a lot of the others none of them come close to topping nine as my favorite.
Have a friend whose first FF was seven, same deal.
Brother also played FF9 first with me and even though he actually likes FF13 and I think it's utter garbage, nine is still both our favorite one.
Someone tell me their exception story so I can stop being weirded out.

I tried to start with FFIV and fucking hated it, then tried to play FFVII and also hated it.

13 has legitimately HOURS of cutscenes and its full of nothing a majority of the time. You can get a 5 minute cutscene, walk and battle for 20 minutes and get another fucking cutscene. Its super overdone Alot of characters are hit or just the most foul ball ever. Hope, Snow and Vanille, get the fuck out of my vidya.

Combat was enjoyable, and it has a great OST. Visually its fine, aesthetically it might be one of the stronger FF games.

What enemy was that... the fucking tortoises

Pretty much. and even then he isnt exactly needed.

VII was my first and I vastly prefer I, V, VI, IX, XII, and Tactics.

I think it's strong bias. I've observed it over the last few years myself.
You will ALWAYS compare an experience to your first initial experience of said thing. For example, you'll go to one theme park, and all theme parks you go to afterwards will be in a direct comparison.
However, thanks to a weird form of nostalgia (no matter how recent it was), the first will 90% of the time come out tops.

OP, you should learn NOT to take people over the Internet seriously.

Why should you care if people don't like your favourite video game?

Sazh... He was our guy.

Maybe you don't like FF or JRPGs, nothing wrong with that.

I had the same vibe from FFVIII, it's my favorite FF yet everyone hates it.

I am definitely not in this boat. I started with VII and V is my favorite.

FFXIII is unironically a good entry level Final Fantasy game. Most people that like it had no pre-conceptions that it would be shit like Sup Forumsirgins like to meme

Its obviously flawed but the potential was amazing. Fuck Toriyama

My first FF was IV DS and IX was my favourite, your theory is wrong.

My actual favorite video game. In a lot of ways, it seems like a better ff13. Stuff like Hope and Snow's similarity to Ken and Shinji seems like slightly more than a coincidence.
Or maybe I just have a gun-to-head fetish idk

It needed like 1 big open area like chapter 12, but very early on. To break up the fucking linear hallway shit enough to get people interested in the long run

we're outliers but his theory in general isn't far off.
I went V, I, XIII, VII (favorite), CC: VII, VIII, X (hate), VI, IX, XI, IV

My first was VIII but my favourite is VII. I do have a lot of fondness for VIII but it's kind of a broken mess in both story and gameplay.

I love P3 MC's design but have yet to take the plunge for P4 since the protag looks like a fucking jobber. the girls look cute tho and I've heard its a marked improvement from P3P (the only version of 3 I've played)

P4 protag's sheer autism more than makes up for his appearance.

I finished all FF games before XIII and I still liked it. Just play those you enjoy.
Some of them are just old in a bad way. VII, for example, is unplayable for me right now, thanks to the ugliest character models in the series. Even though it's probably the best FF game.
Seriously, I can't stand looking at it for more than a few hours. And I finished III for the NES, so it's not just "hurr, muh graphics".
Can't wait for the remake. Even if it's worse, maybe at least it'll be playable.

My first one was VIII and it is my favourite one indeed. Though I wouldn't say it's objectively the best.

Don't take your opinions from Sup Forums or Neogaf. XIII was far from my first Final Fantasy, and I enjoyed it quite a bit. There's a reason they made three of them; superior Nippon taste. XIII is fine.

Having critical thought and opinions of your own hopefully doesn't make you "everything wrong with the gaming ""community"""

4 was my first and 5 and 12 are my favorites.

The game is actually fun and enjoyable once you get off the rails.

I like the battle system as well and the harder boss fights were fun.

This is one of the cases where "it gets good after x hours" apply. I can accept why people think its utter shit because the first 4 to 6 hours are boring crap.

I almost dropped it as well, then i reached barthelandus and the open world after it and realized i was actually enjoying it.

so you'd recommend it if I enjoyed P3?

Thats really sad, OP!

You should AT LEAST have started with FF7. You would have realised that FF10 was the LAST FF game and everything after 10 was a COMPLETE PILE OF SHIT!

Because you want a movie experience right now instead of a game. Nothing wrong with that, but its not a better game.

P4 is absolutely a worse game than P3. Play P3FES, then P4.

My first FF was X. I loved it. But XII and IX are my favorites. They're all memorable experiences, though. And I unapologetically loved XIII.

You're supposed to start with IV, right? Which version?

>everything after 10 was a COMPLETE PILE OF SHIT
>Implying 12 was a complete pile of shit
That game was good and I hate seeing so many people hating on it

13 is good fun game that does not deseve the hate it gets.

No its not one of the better entries and I'll argue more than its haters about the linearity until chapter 11, shops being reduced to faceless menues, bland characters etc. but all in all its a fun game with charm

13-2 knocks it out of the park, fixing all the things 13 was poor at. 10/10 game

havent played LR

Its pretty much P3 with a re-skin, but the tone and story are much lighter than 3. I would still recommend it if you have 60 hours to spare.

>>tfw I'm everything wrong with the gaming community
You and me brother. X is absolute trash compare to XIII.

My first FF was 4
I then played in the order of 6 7 8 5 9 10 1 2 12 13
9 is my favorite but I put it on equal footing with 5 7 and 10

>X is absolute trash compare to XIII.
C-can I join you guys? Can I bring my PSP and original copy of Crisis Core as well?

That's fine OP. I loathe the game, but I also realize it's not a game for me. That's fine.

I personally like FFX for the battle system alone, and detest FFX-2 for the same reason.

God, I can't stand the Dress sphere shit.

Acknowledging the problem is the first step to solving it.

You're right there with him. It takes FAR longer than 4-6 hours for anything to get a semblance of "interesting". Even then, there's nothing about it that will make it worth playing for longer. The characters are awful, the battle system is pathetic and what is considered story is ridiculous in the worst way. Only the music is passable, as such a thing should be in an FF title.

>Its pretty much P3 with a re-skin
Oh, well that might still be co-
>the tone and story are much lighter than 3.
Yeah fuck that, I guess I'll just look up the SLs on youtube, fap to Chie, and call it a day

There's hope for P5 though, I suppose

>Crisis Core
This has gone too far.

>Acknowledging the problem is the first step to solving it.

Forcing yourself to play a game until you like it is literally torture.

I played Persona 3 FES first and loved it and swore up and down I wouldnt be able to like Persona 4 as much.

But holy shit did I.

They are very comparable and similar games, but 4 has a stronger cast of characters that interact more. The story is difficult, many say 3's is better and on the whole I would agree especially the ending, but 4's has better progression/pacing and is more emotional.

There are certain tweaks with battle, personas, social links etc but not worth going into here.

People will fight forever which is better but they are different things and great in their own ways. You'll like 4

>P3 with a reskin

Not even close. P4 improved on P3's gameplay in almost every way. Not even a P4fag, but saying P4 is a mere reskin is doing it injustice

he probably means lighter in tone rather than light as in not much story. its very very story heavy.

I knew it was a long shot, I'm sorry

There's absolutely nothing wrong with privately enjoying FFXIII as a videogame individually considered. Play whatever you like. Sazh best character.
The problem starts when you consider XIII in the context of the franchise as a whole, and of how many fundamental elements it changed radically or simply stripped away. In truth XIII is simply an amplifier, the sins it is guilty off appeared first in X and XII, but when Toriyama took charge they swallowed and consumed the franchise.

XIII should never have been a mainline title, and everything would have been okay.

>in every way
No, it really isn't that different. The only single thing people ever cite is controlling AI party members instead of them being cpu in 3 which I would defend as good in its own way.

Other than that there are no significant differences

>older character is the most tolerable one but least relevant
I wonder if it's just because I'm getting old.

>This is one of the cases where "it gets good after x hours" apply.
30 hours. First thirty hours were no customisation, no skill, just mash X. Then the combat opens up with actual challenging bosses that would wreck you if you tried to X-mash.

Few people liked the story enough to keep going I was one of them.

Then XIII-2 did the reverse by having the combat unlocked from the start but going bonkers with the story and backtracking.

>lighter in tone
this is what worries me. Call me an edgelord but I loved the feels of P3 and even P1

grinding poker as sazh in that 13-2 dlc was comfy as fuck.

sucks that golden saucer place was so barren in the main game but i enjoyed the chance to play as sazh.

just want to get up under a warm blanket by the fire and play poker with sazh

Are you retarded or simply a nigger?

Its a different thing, but its full of emotional moments. And by emotional i dont mean the modern meaning of "sad" but its genuinely laugh out loud funny often, it instills a feeling of real joy, and then there is harrowing sadness as well.

if youre too lazy to play it just watch the giant bomb endurance run and skip or fast forward battle sections

>30 hours. First thirty hours were no customisation, no skill, just mash X.
Its like 20 hours on average and the ONLY thing missing (it was a big thing but still) was picking party members + leader. you still got Summons as they were unlocked in the story

Your first FF sets the bar for your standards for the series.

He's a fine synergist besides it's not like the game is hard enough for any party member to be unusable.

My first FF was either VII or IX, I can't remember which exactly, but my actual favorite game in the franchise is V.
IX is a close second though, although VII comes a couple positions lower than that.

First FF: X
Fav FF: X
Objectively best FF: X

There's still feels, it's just that it isn't the entire world that's in danger this time, just some small town.

First FF: IV
Fav FF: XII
Objectively best FF: VI

The fact that I needed to constantly refer to the in-game encyclopedia to understand ANYTHING that was happening made the game such a slog to get through.

The only redeeming part was the song that plays when you're going through Fang's destroyed home-town and it plays through the battles.

Even then I only liked it because it reminded me of when Zanarkand Ruins did in in FFX.

I also like the game when you play with ability instead of autobattle it provides a challenge.
I didnt so much had a problem with the linearity what i didnt like was when you only had 2 characters the battle system just needs 3 :)
Graphically it looked damn good ..still does soundtrack was amazing, boss battles too, it had no glitches or errors even the fps was pretty locked on ps4.
When the game opens up and you start monster hunts thats when the game goes from average to great. Story while decent get worse because its basically two impossible decisions.. that the devs couldnt even solve and the game kinda cheats in its conclusion because of that lel.
I really like FF13.

Xfags are hands down the most annoying faggots that like FF

>The only redeeming part was the song that plays when you're going through Fang's destroyed home-town and it plays through the battles.

The only part of the game I can remember actually.
That and Sazh and Vanille's sad scene being ruined by Sazh jumping into a magical God Go-Kart Machine and giving the screen a thumbs up.

I feel like Sazh would have been a better character if he weren't black since the tokenized the shit out of him as a result

I only really remember that part because I had to grind there for awhile in order to beat the game's version of Seymour.

>first character to get chronological boost shenanigans
>worst member

Nigga

>FFXIII apologists are coming out in droves now

It's just like the Zelda cycle, you faggots are unbelievable.

no, theyre the only ones with any sense

the 1-5 MUH RETRO hipsters are the worst

theyre the ones who shit on anything and everything released 1997 onwards

If he wasn't black and 15 years younger then yeah, maybe.

I told myself I would be a gaming purist and started off with FF1.

I played about 10 minutes and quit.

Since then I haven't touched a single FF game in the series.

>We must go to french words so the french words can be stopped from french wording her since she's the french words

yeah, great entry title.

FF fans are mostly massive nostalgia faggots that hate all the games not like their first. You fit right in

>starting with the first
lol not even the most autistic fans do that. You should start with VI at least.

XIIIfags are the Trump supporters of the FF fanbase, the Silent Majority.

Then again it says something about XIII's writing when the black guy who is the designated firearm expert, has attention drawn to his afro, functions as the comic relief and has his summon turn into a red convertible is the audience favorite, not because he's amusing but because he's sympathetic and relatable.

At least you accept it. Do the honorable thing and end it. It's for the good of us all.

fuckin white mage supremists. Your kind is over! Hybrid heal/dps classes bring more to the table in every way. what does it feel like to know your job can be outsourced to 10gp items!?

dey took yer jobs!

except vii is amazing? and iv is also amazing?

This.

Honestly this is probably the overall problem with nu-FF. Somewhere after X they forgot how to write relateable characters.

Like, they literally just forgot how a relateable human acts like. Sahz they stumbled into on mistake when they were actually going for a comic relief character.

True for me, mine was FF8 and I didn't find until 7 years later people absolutely hated it.

Played FFVII and FFVI around the same time (when FFVI was released on PS1 with the FFX demo): I think I like FFVI a bit better, I think neither is worth of goty.

Then again, I think FF is the single most overrated jrpg series of the older era, the modern has got Persona (except Persona was NEVER good at ANY point).

6, 7, 8 and 9 are the only ones that matter.
Maybe 11 and 14.

If FF6 (kefka) was originally called FF3 in the west, which games were called FF1 and FF2?

All of the characters are good and have their own distinct advantages at various points throughout the game. Sazh gets Haste first and his offensive buffs are more worthwhile than Hope's defensive buffs overall, and Cold Blood is an excellent Rav skill. I think Snow is the worst overall due to his limited type coverage, few buffs, and proclivity towards Sentinel, but he's apparently very useful endgame due to having the shortest casting animations of any character.

TACTICS IS THE BEST FINAL FANTASY

THIS IS THE ONLY OBJECTIVELY, FACTUAL TRUTH OF THE MATTER

EVERY OTHER PLEBEIAN SHOULD LEAVE

TACTIC MASTER RACE

sheeeit I'm exactly the same. VII was my favorite for a long time but I think the endgame grind burned me out entirely.

I, IV, VI

Uh no. I started with FF1 and worked my way up the ladder, but it's not my favorite, far from it. FF12, FF9 and FF10 in that order are my favorites.

I've played 7, 8, 9 ,10, 13, 13-2, 13-3, and arguably the one I like the most is 8 because of the broken ass levelling system.

But I like 7 and 10 as well because of how customisable the characters are in terms of stats.

I like 9 and 13 because even though they have pantsu on head retarded stories they still did their own thing quite well.

The only one I truly disliked was 13-2 because it didn't do anything special to me, the story was just brain dead and I hated all the characters in it. Caius was ok though.

FF1 = FF1 (NES only)
FF2 = FF4
FF3 = FF6

I started with 10.

I played 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 12, 13, T, TA, TA2.

In order from best to worst: T > 10 = TA > 12 > 7 = 9 > 4 = 6 > 5 = 3 > 1 = TA2 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> 13

I'll admit that I nearly cried when Sazh put the gun to his head.
I did cry at the end when he reunited with his son finally though.

>tfw couldn't plat the game because of the fucking casino grinding
>tfw never got gud enough to beat most of the DLC bosses

>I'll admit that I nearly cried when Sazh put the gun to his head.
Fucking really?

When I was 26 I met a 32 years old who told me he preferred FFXIII over VII because at least nobody relevant died in the former.

Look man, he was a cool guy, I didn't want him to die. I loved the Vanille and Sazh partnership. Not to mention we also literally just witnessed his son get "killed" a minute before hand.
