As for StarTropics, I dunno. It's a first-party Nintendo game that plays similarly to Zelda and they probably needed another action-adventure game.

The bad thing is that it only has 8 buttons, and it does not have the start and select bontons

honestly you will probably struggle with anything beyond 4th gen consoles so you'll probably be alright in that regard
map start and select to the shoulder buttons and use L and R on the second pair
the d-pad and ABYX can all be mapped appropriately from there
