When my dad was alive he was always a Sega and Atari man. He had the Jaguar, Saturn, Genesis, and the Dreamcast. He never liked Nintendo at all and thought it was all baby shit. He eventually got an XBox when it first came out.

He introduced me to Diablo at a very young age and the 2nd game quickly became my favorite game of all time. I was also introduced to the first Halo when I was young, and I quickly grew to love that too.

So basically thanks to him my childhood games were very different from others and probably would get me laughed at by admitting that Halo was a fucking CHILDHOOD game of mine. Whatever.

My dad helped play Spyro with me when I was younger (one of my first vidya). He was also into some NHL game for the PS1 and even went through a Pac Man phase. He hasn't touched a video game in more than a decade though.

My dad got GTA3 when it came out, I was pretty young then so it was awesome playing that with him. Other than that he grew up on Atari and he kicked my ass when we played all his old games.

My dad used to play a few games on the SNES with me hen I was younger, but that was more about family time than the game itself. He's not into gaming whatsoever nowadays. But I own guns now, and we go shooting sometimes, so that's fun.

My dad didn't. But my best friend growing up had a dad who was extremely into video games.

He had every system available at any given time. SNES, Genesis, Saturn, N64, PlayStation, Dreamcast, etc. Were it not for him I would never had gotten to play/be exposed to so many video games/systems growing up.

It's hard to call him the good guy in all this, considering the stuff that came out of the Smithey letters. But I still can't help sympathize a little with him. He clearly wasn't dealt the best lot in life, probably shouldered his share of abuses from his own family that he took with him. And the sense I get from the phonecalls is of a lonely old man who desperately longs for someone to just listen to him for a little while, to make him feel valued, after a long life with a lot of mistakes and not a lot of meaning.

There's no simple narrative with good guys and bad guys here. In dysfunctional families of the caliber we see in the Chandlers, everyone are simultaneously victims and abusers.
