the reason they put Tabata in charge of the game was because people thought it was dumb. But Tabata still wanted to keep what he had done, so he split the game in half with one half being based on what nojima did, the other based on his own ideas.

FFXIV 1.0 was such a trash heap dumpster fire that Square Enix publically apologized for it, rebooted the entire game into 2.0 (which involved literally blowing up the entire reality at the end of 1.0), and then moved on.
This only happened because 1.0 was ACTUALLY bad, though - FFXV is just kind of 'meh'. 1.0 had serious, fundamental design flaws that could only be fixed by a full on reboot.
