What is a man?
Trying to escape a fate worse than death by locking your soul in a neverending cycle of rebirth until you man up and decide to accept the punishment for your fuck up.

Whatever you believe
spoil me on this entire game Sup Forums. I'll never play through it. give me the gist of it, what CAN change the nature of a man?
A proper answer is never given.
see
If there is anything I have learned in my travels across the Planes, it is that many things may change the nature of a man. Whether regret, or love, or revenge or fear - whatever you believe can change the nature of a man, can. I’ve seen belief move cities, make men stave off death, and turn an evil hag's heart half-circle. This entire Fortress has been constructed from belief. Belief damned a woman, whose heart clung to the hope that another loved her when he did not. Once, it made a man seek immortality and achieve it. And it has made a posturing spirit think it is something more than a part of me.
>talks like he's got it all figured out
>still goes to hell when he dies
That's because his crime is simply that fucking great.
He literally cannot escape it.
That's why he pursued immortality, to avoid going there.
Before you ask, there was never a definitive answer as to what he did, merely that his actions condemned all the Planes to die a final death from which there would be no rebirth.
He goes willingly though
keep ya mitts off
>yfw his only crime was believing
ego death
The point is nothing could change his nature. After suffering through many lifetimes and doing all he could to redeem himself, escape his fate, he is still the same man who committed whatever crime doomed him in the first place. He wanted to know what could change the nature of a man to escape that fate and clearly, despite his best attempts and his 25 score in wisdom, the only valid answer still ended up being "nothing".
It's up to you, but I think the point in that question was to understand that anything can.
We are all made almost exclusively by our experiences, and they shape and change us in many ways. Most will have an almost undetectable change in our nature, but some may have a huge impact on it. They all turn us into who we are regardless.
Even then, the very definition of "nature" is ambiguous here. Does it just refer to our Id, or to the mind as a whole? Or even something else?
Still, it's not like the whole point of playing was to find an answer to that. It's really not even that important within the game. There's a lot more going for in it and you should play it even if just to see the conclusion of Dak'kon's sub-plot. That shit was genius.
Because he realizes the life he's living is worse than the hell he's fated to.
Anyway he's already on first name basis with all the demon and devils who live there so it'll be fun.
Oh no, nature of a man can be changed by whatever you believe it can.
But changing your nature doesn't absolve you of past wrongdoings.
All of these answers are accepted, though I usually go with regret
Death, probably.
How does TNO with all his memories rank up compared with other entities in the setting when it comes to strength? Would Lady of Pain still wreck him?
>Would Lady of Pain still wreck him?
Yes.
Torment
>going to hell
>not becoming the silent king with your skelebros
shit taste detected
I almost cried when Grace promised she would find TNO on the lower planes no matter what.
No woman will ever love me so strong that she would follow me into literal hell.
;_;
The Lady of Pain would wreck gods. Any number of gods you could throw at her. Her D&D statblock is "wins the fight".
Reunited TNO would probably be the equivalent of a level 30 character or so, a good match for most demigods and able to put up a fight even against some lords of hell like Bel, but ultimately weaker than those.
>I almost cried when Grace promised she would find TNO on the lower planes no matter what.
Yeah, that was great.
>FALL-FROM-GRACE.
>"So you have found yourself at last?"
>YES. THE PRICE WAS... HIGH. THE COST WAS MANY LIFETIMES, MINE AND OTHERS.
>"The price of such a thing is seldom measured in copper. Are you still -"
>I AM STILL THE ONE YOU KNOW - BUT MY PERSPECTIVE HAS... CHANGED. I HAVE NOT FORGOTTEN YOU, IF THAT IS YOUR FEAR.
>"No, that was not my fear."
>I CANNOT REMAIN HERE FOR MUCH LONGER. MY PUNISHMENT CALLS, AND FATE AND TIME SHALL SOON BE HERE. I WILL RETURN YOU TO SIGIL, IF YOU WISH.
>"That is not my wish. I *will* find you again, no matter where in the Lower Planes you will be - just as you shall be able to find me."
>IT MAY BE A LONG TIME. WHERE I AM BOUND, TIME IS NOT MEASURED IN YEARS. AND THE CRIMES I HAVE COMMITTED ARE STRONGER THAN ANY CAGE.
>"No cage shall separate us, and no Plane shall divide us. Keep thinking of me, and we shall meet again."
>I SHALL NOT FORGET ALL YOU SACRIFICED FOR ME.
>"Just do not forget me."
>TIME LAYS WASTE TO ALL THINGS. BUT I SHALL FIGHT IT AS LONG AS I CAN.
>"Time is not your enemy. Forever is."
Love
Isn't belief supposed to be in that list?
That's the conversation with Ravel at the midway point of the game, the belief answer only becomes available when talking to the transcendent one at the end.
Nurture.
>TIME LAYS WASTE TO ALL THINGS. BUT I SHALL FIGHT IT AS LONG AS I CAN.
That's pretty chilling considering how stalwart he comes across in the finale.
>merely that his actions condemned all the Planes to die a final death from which there would be no rebirth.
that's fanfic bullshit that has nothing to do with the game
Vecna very nearly slapped her shit right out of sigil.
Lady of Pain won.
Doesn't the game mention that the planes are dying a slow death for his crimes?
Belief
She prevented Vecna from reshaping the multiverse, but she sure as fuck didn't do it alone.
The planes are suffering due to his immortality. The crimes that got him to seek immortality in the first place aren't clearly explained but there's no reason to believe they're of the world-destroying variety. It is implied that he worked as a mercenary in the Blood War at some point, which in most cases is enough for the devils to have a claim to your soul after death.
maybe it was a reference to all the lives he stole to remain immortal, but there's no literal death of the planes
Breaking her heart.
Why would you give up your soul just to work as a mercenary? Doesn't seem like a good deal.
>No longer loses his memory from dying
>Everytime he 'dies' he comes back and someone else dies instead
why would he seek to regain his mortality anyways? there are no drawbacks to this
he didn't sign a contract with the lawful evil ones (Tanaari?), it was something else
Regret.
...
I'd say a complete TNO is a bit closer to Greenwood's self-insert then level 30.
Fucking retarded shitposters, all of you. So many people, and not a single one said the only true answer that Chris Avellone posted: choice. Choice can change the nature of a man. That's the point of the game, and the epitome of RPG design.
The game is about not being able to escape your fate, aka determinism, you dummy. You missed the point completely.
>Her D&D statblock is "wins the fight".
Caine vs Lady of Pain who wins?
