FFXV quite clearly did not have paid reviews. If anything the odds were stacked against FFXV. So many people wanted to hate it and be overly critical of it.

But XI, XII, XIII and XIV are all worse than X-2.

X-2 is one of the most fun FF games, and it rightfully deserves an 85. XV is probably 10-20 points too high.

Considering Sup Forums lowered the score themselves because they're salty fucks, I'd say that score isn't a good representation.

There's also the issue of free games for people who go along with embaroos, which in this case swayed reviews tremendously.

Metacritic's shitty system means it does have an effect: just a few people giving straight zeros will lower the score by a few points unless other people give it straight tend to balance it out.

The story is a mess, the production values are all over the shop, the VA work phoned in, and the soundtrack is simply awful in places. It's hard to enjoy what is admittedly okay-to-good gameplay when every aspect of the presentation is so lackluster.

The reviews, more often than not, are topical to some other articles they wrote on the side. The game isn't really reviewed as much as it's used to validate other of their clickbaits. Many of their "reviewers" literally admit to not play games at all.

Sen No Kotoba is one of my favourite musical sequences in any video game ever and it's rare because most video games do not randomly burst into musical without it being insanely corny. Granted, it's still kind of corny but in a way that really makes one smile.
