I just started Kotor. How and when do I get a lightsaber? And how do they even work? I know the films don't explain much, but do the games? I'm assuming the blades are some form of plasma, but if so why are they called *light*sabers? Is it a different form of light/radiation? Is there such a thing, and is a real lightsaber feasible?

You don't get them until you complete the first planet mission. Only after that do you get to spec yourself as a Jedi and get a saber. Sorry.
False, the Jedi Knight games have the best saber gameplay by miles.

Finish the first planet, and then you'll head on over towards the next to train and spec into your Jedi following. That first planet is a good 4-5 hours the first time around though.
>KOTOR 2
This one's a little more tricky, first planet needs to be done as always, but on the second onwards you start collecting parts to build your own Lightsaber. Get the focus crystal, lens, and one other part, and you can craft your own and then upgrade and enhance it from there. The earliest you get get all the parts though is JUST after the second planet, though depending on how you play you could go 3/4 of the game without one as well.
