Part time student worker as a "Help Desk Technician". If I'm at the help desk it's just like any other help desk except there's a fuck ton of leniency, you would have to majorly fuck up consistently to get fired.

If I'm here in the lobby you just wait for students/staff to come up with generic issues or university related issues and help them and fill out a survey so they can track some metrics. That's about it.

If you're full time you do the same shit as me, just more hours and healthcare.

I don't mind it, hate the help desk, but I think I hate it mostly because of how disorganized it is. Hell, for the longest time there was no way at all for us to verify your student info so if you wanted someone's account just call and pretend you are them, give us their username and we'd reset it for you over the phone.

The best is when staff call about university services that I don't have any kind of access to and don't know who to talk to about it so I have to just take the info down and play where's waldo with who the fuck knows anything about this or where it gets filed under.

I don't care if you don't like the laptop or not. Out of the T410, T60, X60T and X200T I had I like this one the best. The T60 is second best though. I liked the 5:4 monitor, the 1400x1050 display is great, it's just slow unfortunately. I like everything about the X220 except that horrible screen resolution.

If it makes you feel any better, I worked hell desk for almost 5 years, and we had the same problem. I got so fed up with it, I made my own cheat sheets which evolved into actual documentation which evolved into training materials. I trained at least 9 hires, including two managers who got the helldesk manager job because 1: I didn't fucking want it, and 2: they both can from some place where they were an operations manager for 20 years or something.

But everyone said I should've been the department head and I was like 22.

I moved on to a pc tech job, and now I'm a systems analyst / junior sysadmin. I do a lot of IBM AS400 work.

I kind of want to go back to the first place I mentioned and save the day, but they outsourced the entire help desk and deserve their shitty fate.

Yeah. I'm not sure if I don't like it purely because it's just so disorganized, but I do know I dislike customer service entirely so that's a definite factor.

If it was better structured, had actual training and a proper internal wiki for the help desk it'd be way more tolerable and I'd probably be able to actually help people, rather than writing a ticket and waiting for something to happen.

Though to be honest I already graduated with my bachelor's in IT and I'm trying to find a job right now. Preferably something in state that's not help desk, but if it pays good enough and seems to work with what I like I'll probably take it.

I'm trying to see if I can't get a Software Engineering/Developer internship too in town or up north too since I like programming. So far I've gotten a response for a developer internship, hoping I might get the engineering one up north though. Wish the internship worked out with where my friend worked, that shit would have been great. Wonderful company and he loves it, and they work with all the crap I like too.

Oh well though.
