What the fuck was this sword supposed to be

What the fuck was this sword supposed to be.

Don't get me wrong, I love it (unlike it's owner) but it seems supernatural yet doesn't seem to have any connection to the lore of Final Fantasy VII.

He misquoted Megadeth

It's just a generic runic sword which he's covering with magic because he's a Spellblade.

What is it made of, though? Materia? The only things in FFVII thst can produce magic are Cetra, monsters, and those that wield materia.

It's a fucking generic sword like all those that Cloud and others use. As in most definitely of the same material.
Since the sword itself isn't magical, it's just being COATED in magic.
Go play any FF game with Spellblade class like FF5 or FF6 you dumb subhuman fuck.

Spellblades don't exist in FFVII; just faggots with materia and a sword(s).

>Spellblades don't exist in FFVII; just faggots with materia and a sword(s).
Yes they do exist, it's called using Materia for the source of magic you coat your sword with.

There are some materia that allow you to add elemental properties to a weapon. Maybe that's what the materia in the hilt is for?

I dunno, Genesis isn't a particularly well thought out character. Just roll with it.

He's gonna be in the remake, isn't he?

I liked that he was a villian who wasn't evil whatsoever.

a rarity in FF, the only other one I can think of is FF12's villain, who has the same goal as the party, just wants a different outcome.

Nomura said they'd like to stick to original FF7 for the most part but there will be some elements added for those familiar with the Compilation of FF7 content.
I really, REALLY hope they don't do the Nibelheim scene with Genesis where he was the one that pushed Sephiroth over the edge by revealing the truth about him.
In general I don't mind some extra Compilation content but for the love of god don't add anything related to Genesis.
Extra Zack scenes? Sure. Flashbacks of Zack and Cloud running from ShinRa and Turks? Sure. Genesis or Angeal? NOPE FUCK OFF

can we just get a what-if we were playing Zack? the actually cool character Cloud thinks he is for most of the game?

>can we just get a what-if we were playing Zack?
That would be retarded.

>the actually cool character Cloud thinks he is for most of the game?
Cloud NEVER, at any point in the game, thinks that he's Zack you inbred chucklefuck, you shitstained cockmonglers keep repeating that bullshit and it's clear you are Gen-Z underages that never ever played FF7 and only know Crisis Core and Advent Children at best.
Cloud doesn't have Zack's memories, Cloud thinks that he himself was SOLDIER with his own idealized idea of being one.

Thank god someone gets it at least.

No. Zack is likable, but not interesting in his own right.

Someone did a big what-if doujin about what FFVII would be like if Zack was the protagonist and it's the most cringey shonen shit you could think of.

The majority of what makes Cloud interesting is his identity crisis and mental instability, and the way the game hints at it throughout disc one. Then, the real payoff is watching the truth behind the nibelheim incident and realizing that Cloud WAS there and DID defeat Sephiroth that day. It's such a satisfying character arc, and without it, FFVII wouldn't be FFVII.

>can we just get a what-if we were playing Zack? the actually cool character Cloud thinks he is for most of the game?

This. Cloud adapts some aspects of Zack's general persona, because Zack was his close friend and the person he grew to associate with the ideal image of a SOLDIER. He self-inserted as Zack in the Nibelheim flashback, but that was a caae of cognitive dissonence, since he was there anyway.

And before anyone says it, Zack told him what had happened in the reactor with Sephiroth in the three days Sephiroth spent in the Mansion basement.

>blue materia sloted
>elemental materia is blue
>adds magic element to weapon
>assume he has fire socketed in accessory too as he uses a fire spell later on.

As close as i can come to an "explanation" aside from its just a cool fight scene.

How many different versions of this we had?

Why does it change with every version?

It's possible to manipulate the lifestream without using materia (which is the crystallized essence of the lifestream fused with the knowledge of the ancients), but I didn't play the ridiculous FF7 spinoffs so I have no idea if it was stated somewhere that this guy could do that.

just one? Crisis Core just tells the Zack story and that mobile game covers the turks.

Only Cetra can do that.

Well, the Cetra and some monsters born of mako.

But yeah, Genesis doesn't fit that description. 's explanation is far more likely.

the problem I have with FF7 and a remake of FF7 in general is just the overall hokeyness of the entire middle of the game.

its seriously shit and everyone forgets about it, everyone wanks off to the start and the end but there is a good 30 fucking hours of garbage.

FF9 had a much more balanced story where it jumped around showing different characters, their arcs, and how they converged, and the "middle" had some of the coolest areas and music in the series.

FF9 was ok, right until the end, then it felt like the story was thrown right out of the window. To this day i still have no idea where the hell necron comes into it all..

There's Last Order too, but it's not canon and gets numerous important details wrong, like Tifa waking up and seeing Cloud, Cloud having Mako eyes before Hojo's experiments, and mostol of all, Sephiroth jumping into the lifestream of his own free will.

Only thing Last order is good for is the fight scenes. Seriously, watching Zack defeat an entire squad of MP's with his hands alone drove home pretty hard how strong 1st Class SOLDIER's are.

FF9 was alright, but I just can't stand Garnet and most of the shit that involved Alexandria was really dumb and required almost everyone involved to be willfully stupid hypocrites.

>Sephiroth jumping into the lifestream of his own free will.
Fuck that movie.

Last Order was literally just an advertisement for the Before Crisis game so it's not like you're meant to take it seriously.

Versions of what?
I'm talking about the Nibelheim scene where there's two versions of it.
The original FF7 one which is Cloud, Zack and Sephiroth arriving in Nibelheim, Sephiroth go to the reactor to examine it, they see that mutated monster in one of the tubes, then Sephiroth goes suspicious over his own origin and locks himself in the totally-not-resident-evil mansion basement to read up on all the experiments and his own origin, which causes him to snap.

In Crisis Core, they shoehorned Genesis into the reactor inspection scene with Genesis revealing to Sephiroth his origin. Sephiroth dismisses it as Genesis' bullshit but Genesis' speech still planted a seed of doubt in Sephiroth's mind which causes him to lock himself in the basement to read like in FF7.

Basically in FF7, Sephiroth is his own catalyst from his own built up doubt over the years.
In Crisis Core, they retconned it to Genesis being the prime catalyst behind Sephiroth snapping.

>the problem I have with FF7 and a remake of FF7 in general is just the overall hokeyness of the entire middle of the game.
>its seriously shit and everyone forgets about it, everyone wanks off to the start and the end but there is a good 30 fucking hours of garbage.

I'm legitimately curious which part do you mean.
Are you talking about everything from after Disc 1 up to Cloud regaining his memories? Cause there's still plenty of fine stuff in there such as that winter town in the mountains where you learn more about Aerith's origin for example. The snowboard minigame was also fine, the snowstorm minigame however was cancer as was the entire Big Materia bullshit.

Yeah this is pretty much why I like the game so much. All the build up and shit you don't realize until you know the twist throughout the entire game is so cool to see during subsequent playthroughs. I also pick up on new things here or there whenever I replay it. Crisis core is good at taking the events of 7 and elaborating on them, but anything that it added was pretty trash honestly. Zack is only a good character because of the comparison to Cloud

Five.

2 in VII proper, 1 (technically 7) in Before Crisis, 1 in Last Order and 1 in Crisis Core.

Crisis Core's is by far the worst because of Genesis even if it fixed Cloud throwing Sephiroth in the Mako. It also manages to contradict both Before Crisis and Last Order by making the Turk on site Shuriken/Cissnei, even if it was the only relevant restriction from those.

>Why

Because absolute incompetence and wanting to prop up whatever is in each game with no care.

I was more disappointed that Sephiroth didn't flip out and smash the pods like in the old game. That and no "Those Chosen By The Planet" playing as he burned the the village down was criminal.

Fighting him as Zack was pretty cool though, I wouldn't mind if they put that in the remake as a hidden flashback battle or something.

No, he was ultimately evil. He became evil about halfway through the game (after he was the designated villain). He just didn't become evil until he realizes is father/creator Hollander was a hack fraud who couldn't cure him.

All he wanted was a cure from his secret Jenova degradation. Hollander said, "yeah, I can do that, just Kill President Shinra and Hojo for me and also steal 80% of SOLDIER and build an army to break ShinRa with me. Then I'll cure you." So Genesis says "sounds legit." After it all goes south, Genesis tells Hollander to pony up. Hollander says "lol, I dunno how, wait plz don't kill me." At this point Genesis becomes evil and insane and says "If you can't cure me, then I'll just kill every one along with me."

In the end, he finds a Huge Materia called the "Goddess Materia" (Minerva) that he absorbs and it cures him. Then, he becomes sane, stops being a faggot for Loveless and goes to a cave somewhere to sleep until the world needs him.
Sephiroth goes insane and evil in much the same way except he was never degrading and he wanted to become a literal God instead of content to be a hero.

It's a spellblade. He's a spellblade. In Final Fantasy, there's a sort of knight/paladin class that casts magic on their weapons called "spellblade." Genesis is that class, that is his weapon, he's using magic and casting it on his sword.

The runic symbols and color/aura is a result of the magic being cast on the blade.

Fun fact, Sephiroth, Genesis and Angeal were all the fetus Jenova sample superbabies. Sephiroth was actually the most sane of all of them. Sephiroth was a hybrid who becomes megalomaniacal, Angeal was a crossbreed who becomes suicidal, Genesis was a tranpslant recipient with an inferiority complex to Sephiroth--then goes insane when he finds out he's dying--then becomes completely sane and fine once he's cured...and just fucks off for no reason.
