What is the best game in the series and why is it Spirit of Justice Sup Forums?

It's not the best but it's up there.

Original Trilogy > Spirit of Justice

I'll concede that TT and maybe the original were better than Spirit of Justice but JFA? No way. That was the weakest out of the trilogy due to the fucking Turnabout Big Top case, even the Matt Engarde case couldn't save that travesty from ruining the game. SoJ beats JFA, easy.

I loved SoJ but you're off your rocker if you think it's the best AA.

I have a hard time picking the best and worst in this series, it's pretty consistent.

The only things that I know for certain is JFA is the worst and AJ is 1 game better than worst.
JFA had one good trial, and it was the last one.
Case 3 in AJ was tolerable.

Other than that, I'd agree that JFA wasn't the strongest overall game because case 1 and case 3 were bad, but case 2 was decent, and case 4 was only just "good." JFA's last case is arguably the best in the entire series and is better than anything AJ has to offer. AJ has one good case (the first one) and everything goes downhill after that.

I know I am, but I don't really get it. I played ever AA once, at release (aside from PLvsAA and AAI2), but I remember loving it besides Hobo Phoenix. Onoskumaru agrees with me.

To it's defense the last case had a good plot twist and then the game starts fucking with you.

Blackquill bantz was the best part. True, it didn't drag, so I guess 2-3 is worse.

Be honest, do people not like it when Phoenix isn't the main overall star and he has to share the spotlight with someone else (Apollo, Athena, Layton, etc) in this series?

Depends on what you don't like about the PL gameplay since it was made easier to accommodate Ace Attorney fans.

I want Phoenix to go away actually, since his arc is over.

But I (sort of) don't want these people either.

The real problem is that the other characters aren't as likable or as engaging as Phoenix

No, people are fine with Feeny not being the star. The main reason everyone hated AJ was because the game boiled down to Feeny's 8 year revenge plan to get back at Kristoph and Apollo doesn't get any development.

athena had her moment when she tried to rip apart her mother with machinery, i guess she's pretty much fullfilled as an character

i mean sure, it's possible to tell more about her, but why not just put apollo in some kind of tragedy again? he's perfect storyteller's punching bag

AA7 will give Apollo a 3rd back story where Thallassa was a surrogate mother for a barren women.

It's not that, it's just the current state of the series makes the writing impossible to be as good as it was in the Trilogy, or even in the two Investigation games.

The reason why Trilogy Phoenix is so good is because of how consistent the three games are. By the end of Trials and Tribulations, the Ace Attorney series was wrapped up very neatly to the point where you could leave it at that, but still have room to do more.

Apollo could have been a good character from the get go if AA4 was a standalone game, separate from the Phoenix Wright and the trilogy, but as we all know, Capcom's meddling forced Phoenix into the game and ruined everything. AA4 ends up shitting on everything that was established by the trilogy, and Apollo gets no focus or development despite being the playable character. He's ignored in AA5, and then it took until AA6 to make him a decent character. And even then, there are still some loose ends from AA4 about Apollo that haven't been completely tied up.

Athena was just a shitty character altogether considering her back story is just a copy of another, more popular and already established character (Edgeworth), and was completely unnecessary considering they had something to work with from AA4, but decided to ignore completely.

So what you're left with are three main characters fighting for attention, where Phoenix is already established but they don't really know what to do with him since they nuked what was perfectly established from the trilogy, Apollo who nobody likes (at least until SoJ) because they decided to introduce him into the series and proceed to do nothing with him, and Athena, who nobody asked for and now can't go away because she's part of the agency.

So people just want Phoenix since he's the most iconic and most recognizable, and he's easier to cling to considering there are still a bunch of characters from his past that they can right into the current timeline.
