There are two kinds of racing games that gather any interest right now:
- (faux) sims with recognizable brands (Forza, Gran Turismo, the Crew, Project Cars, Drive Club, Asetto Corsa)
- Mario Kart

How did we reach this estate? How can games in this genre be mechanically innovative if people just want to feel for a second like they own a Ferrari and then be done with it?

Games like Rollcage, Death Rally, Speed Racer, Sky Roads, Carmageddon, Kirby Air Ride, Battle Cross, Destruction Derby, Scorcher, F-Zero, Aerogauge, Riptide, Micromachines... I have fond memories of them partly because they tried something different.

I guess it doesn't only affect racing games. I feel like there's a segment in video games that doesn't exist anymore.

[/blog] and whatnot

I guess it has to do with the advancement of graphical technology making experimental "mid budget" games less feasible, which is a problem for all genres.

I always wondered why sci-fi racing games like F-Zero and Extreme G weren't attempted more often.

Games are too expensive to make, therefor publishers only greenlight what they think are sure fire hits, which of course are just derivatives of already popular fads.

Gamers as a whole are uncritical and willingly preorder whatever they are told to, only if a game is exceptionally nonfunctional do they raise any complaint.

There was some insane trackbuilding racing game that got posted all over Sup Forums a few years ago

Trackmania i think it was called.

It was like hotwheels with f1 cars.

>rocket league

You don't race in Rocket League you numbskull, so it's not a racing game by definition.

baby games

Faux or not, The Crew isn't a sim racer at all. It's an RPG

Trackmania is great, but the series peaked with the first game. Since then, it's been nonstop ubisoft jewery, breaking the game up into different purchasable sections and sequels.

Try Sonic snd Sega All Stars Racing Transformed.

All you are doing is making me miss Burnout

Falls under 'Mario Kart' and given its age, I wouldn't say its representative of the current market.

Dirt Rally is a very accurate sim and released this past year if you're into that. It's far above faux sims.

RBR is better.

I've been playing Fast Racing Neo recently and it's pretty fun.

I just want another burnout like 3.

RBR was 2005. Not very current now is it.

Why haven't you bought it yet?

I think it's like fighting games where it's fun to casually play with friends now and again or playing at an advanced level with people of the same skill level but an absolute shit experience for anything in between.
It's a hard balance to get right and when you are going to be compared to Mario Kart which has improved over decades it's a risky investment to take.
Sonic ASRT but no one gave it a chance because of this I feel.

Burnout was the biggest crime. Sandbox was retarded for a game about fast speeds and crashes

You race to score the most goals

This. There's no room for the middle/b-tier game anymore. I'm messing around with PCSX2 and playing all the racing games like Tokyo Xtreme Racer, Auto Modellista, Enthusia etc; some of which had some interesting ideas/mechanics but never made it big-time.
