>2016
>turn-based games won't work anymore
So what's up with this meme? Is Sup Forums retarded, or really thinking the minority of actually challenging action based games, while also being more time consuming to develop is the only choice for future games?

Picture related, some good turn based games from pile of many other good ones, not counting the TCG based games.

>Agarest put in the same list as EO and SMT

Rude.

Explain

Cause when people say turn based they either think of fedoralization or other GS games or weeaboo bullshit
Neither is good

Because children have shit taste and reddit has been invading for years. If they cannot mash a button repetitively then their minds snap. It's like asking a dubfag to read subs in a movie or anime. Any effort triggers them.

and yet they will say turn-based is effortless because "y-you're just choosing stuff from a menu!"...and playing vidya is just pushing buttons and staring at a screen, you could simplify almost any of them like that, really

>agarest
>good anything
come on man, this is some obvious bait

Nocturn is the only good one from that

...

People's attention spans have diminished in recent years and everyone clamors over instant gratification paradigms. The instant feedback of swinging your sword into a group of enemies. "Not playing a game that feels like it came out of a time machine". These are arguments they use, but it's just a game and any system can work in the end. Great games exist in turn-based format and can exist in today's market. Conversely, you can make awful, boring, generic games with the same systems (I am Setsuna).

Turn-based *should* exist for RPGs, as any more active and you begin to breach the barrier that makes an action game what it is. ATB was a consequence of both the hardware and its design (methodical planning distinct from an action game), even when we had games like Star Ocean with active/movement-based "arena" combat in an RPG.

I have feeling you haven't even touched the others

EO is good and I'll fight you faggots.

>Turn-based *should* exist for RPGs, as any more active and you begin to breach the barrier that makes an action game what it is. This is stupid FUD that needs to die. Ys for example existed for ages and was ARPG. ATB was just pointless gimmick that makes you wait for your turn. Turn based games are strong as action based games, with the upside that development team have to put less time in visuals (enemy animations, and all that crap that needs to be scripted for every action encounter) and focus more in core gameplay concepts, balancing, and strategy.

Agarest has to have been the most boring shit I've ever played I could not make it past the first generation before getting too bored to keep playing.

Sorry, I have no 3ds.

It's really not. It's just a dumbed down version of old grid crawlers. All of those games are irredeemable shit.

Ys is not comparable to Final Fantasy, which is the point. I thought we were talking about strictly role-playing games with titles like Nocturne up there.

Final Fantasy's departure from turn-based is the big thing, I feel. The majority of games up to and including XIII were some variation of ATB, with turns being taken based on speed. XV was a total contrast; it was pure action. XVI is going to be more of the same because it sold so well. Why?

>because it sold so well
Worse than XIII

>Ys is not comparable to Final Fantasy, which is the point. I thought we were talking about strictly role-playing games with titles like Nocturne up there.

Err, how is Ys not comparable? Also I don't want this thread turn into yet another Final Fantasy discussion, since combat wasn't never FF's strong points (apart from XI) without heavily modding the games. So I really doubt combat is what sells FF anyways.

i've played them all except DT2
agarest is fucking garbage, nocturne is great, EO is good but not my type of game

s/never/ever/

>choose words from a menu while enemies and characters stand around like retards and take turns attacking instead of actual gameplay
>only """"""""""strategy"""""""""" in all turn based games are hit enemies with their weaknesses (from pokemon to smt its all the same shit) and healing when necessary
>"b-but you can recruit demons in this game!!!"

The demon thing is shallow and is more of a guessing game than anything else. It's not satisfying to get a demon, even catching a pokemon takes more patience and skill.

Then again there is no """"""""""skill"""""""""""" needed for turn based games, they're just interactive menus. You can choose words in menus with DVDs and blurays too, these "games" are literally movies.

How about actually getting to move your character and react to shit instead of standing still like a retard and relying on luck/stats? Videogames should test your reflexes and reward you for beating a challenge.

Not just choose words from menus which comes down to hitting with weakness and healing all the time. That's boring and dumb.

Turn-based games, like open world games, are a meme.

I played the first EO expecting a hard game giving the fame this game got. You can breeze through the game just by having the "traditional" party: Alchemist, Healer, Survivalist. I managed to veat the final boss on my 2nd atrempt lol.
This game has nothing special. Maybe the fact you're expect to make a build without any indication and grind to know what's good or not (or follow a guide). Also the game is bugged.
In the end, games like Shining in the Darkness feel more modern than this and more fun.

>I don't like RPGs
Okay, thank you for your input. Good talk.

Nobody feel it is even worth mention horror in bottom left?

>agarest

lol

you can get away with shitpost nep threads, but you're not fooling anyone into thinking agarest is good

nobody has played it
it's a vita game after all

>implying people play pandering moeshit
inb4 nepshit floods in

I played it. It's a better crawler than EO for sure, but they are both terrible franchises.

...

The only people who dislike turn based combat are millenials who grew up with CoD and Halo and need something to blow up on screen every 5 seconds, otherwise their ADD kicks in and they get bored.

Turn based combat is the comfiest shit ever.

>Record of Agarest War
>good, by any conceivable measure
Trust me, I love SRPGs. But Agarest is one of the worst pieces of shit I've ever had the displeasure of playing. The combat is needlessly convoluted and grindy, the story is fucking retarded, there's too much borderline pedophilic dating sim elements, and the game's performance/graphics leave much to be desired. Granted I played on PS3, but I can't imagine the PC version being much better.

WHERE IS THE DEFENSE OF AGAREST OP???

Yes. DT2 is leagues better than every single EO. Every aspect of the game is better designed and it is more challenging as well.

>>turn-based games won't work anymore
>So what's up with this meme?
It's a feminist / progressive "current year" argument. It's this childish mindset, where everything you do is the hip new thing to do, and everything you don't like is for old people living in the past.

Also le epic 'Why do you like what I don't like'

>Agarest
>Good

>tfw only one who liked agarest on Sup Forums

>only one on Sup Forums with irredeemable shit taste
i really doubt that

Im so sick of turn based games. The problem with the genre is they are all the fucking same, you might as well just watch a movie

There is way more variety to turn based combat than action based.

What are you talking about? There have been plenty of turn-based games released this year

all my friends play this shit. I don't like it, but turn-based defs isn't dead or going away soon.

>walk 3 steps
>random battle
>loading screen
>beginning animation
>slow turn based combat
>victory screen showing characters posing
>loading screen
>walk 3 steps
>repeat

Open world action games where you can see what is coming and not having so much downtime is the way to go.

if every turn based JRPG was as mechanically enjoyable as Baten Kaitos or Mana Khemia, I'd be all about it. Most of them are barebones trash though.

Turn based combat just needs to do something to set itself apart. SMT has the demon system with weaknesses as well as conversation, it does good for it.

The main thing in SMT is the turn presses really.

What a faggot

Combine people that never liked turned based games with 18 year olds that grew up with only ARPGs or WRPGs and you have your answer.
I like turned based games better since they tend to be less easy to cheese compared to ARPGs that usually devolve into spamming dodge to take advantage of invincibility frames and spamming the one or two overpowered moves since it's not worth it to do anything else.

Turn press, negotiation and skill/demon management is the best because there's so many things you can look forward too when progressing

Even though I still love persona, that's what I believe the game is lacking. Only the protagonist gets to have a different set of progression rewards. The other party members are all the same shit and customization doesn't mean anything to them

Magatamas in nocturne where another very good asset as well

Turn based is still great when rewards come from many different aspects

What games has a better turn based combat system than Mana Khemia?
