Both. But still very worth playing if you liked System Shock 2, and want a shit load of story.
Pretty much what said
It goes on sale for less than 2 bucks very often to it's worth picking up.
It's worth playing, but don't go in expecting a GOTY straight away.
The opening level is fucking shit. The second level is shit. The third level is kinda shit, then fourth level is meh, and this trend continues throughout the game with it slowly getting better. At the Lebedevs Jet level it finally reaches decent or kinda good, at Hong Kong it reaches great levels and then from then on it's pure GOTY, GOTYAY & GOAT.
So how much non-linearity does it actually have? Any particular RPG you'd compare it to in regards to this aspect?
It was dated in many respects at release, but it's got some incredible positive points. I went in not expecting about the middle of 6th gen and found one of my all time favorite games. It's clunky, ugly, and the ai is hilarious, but I found it all charming, in top tier B-movie kinda way.
It's fairly linear, the brilliant part is about the many different ways you can do shit and the way the game tracks your decisions.
System Shock 2 or Vampire the Masqurade Bloodlines.
But in reality there isn't really much like Dues Ex. Just those 2 games just about equal it and are kinda like it in some ways.
Every level is just an open map, go where you want to go whenever if you can get there. Kinda like a Hitman or Thief level. Very non linear level design.
Speedruns skip a vast majority of the game by killing people and knowing passcodes, or just straight up knowing where to go next. There is almost always more than 2 ways into and out of an objective and while the game follows a set path the choices you make dramatically change what characters say and what happens.
Get the GMDX mod for your first playthrough, it fixes bugs and the things it adds are either minor or makes the game less dated (ie: being able to mantle things so you don't have to play building block simulator just to climb something slightly higher than your jump height.)
i only played it for the first time around 2013 and i fucking loved it, you just need time to adapt and play the tutorial in priority first before throwing a hissy fit about nostalgia goggles, it plays damn well once you understand the game
>dated
There's that word again
Clunky janky mess with stiff gameplay and movement
Don't bother playing
expect horrible gameplay and unbelievably good writing.
If you're into conspiracy research you'll love it since a lot of it is based on REAL conspiracy theories.
I played it through 2 or 3 months ago for the first time, get the DX10 renderer and you're good to go.
It took me years to get myself to beat the first mission and beat the rest of the game, but it was 100% worth it. Since playing I've beaten the game twice again.
Just don't go in expecting a competent shooter and you'll be fine.
>Get the GMDX mod for your first playthrough
Yes and yes. It's pretty great, just not a GOTYAY.
>get GMDX
Don't do this OP.
Dues Ex doesn't need mods at all. It's perfectly fine in vanilla. If you must try out the mods, do it in a second playthrough.
This isn't like Stalker or VtMB where some mods are essential, this game is perfectly finished and fine without any mods and it should be experienced vanilla before any modifications are added.
What would be the pros and cons of getting GMDX on first playthrough?
its fucking great
you'll even want to do multiple playthroughs because how you can complete objectives differently and change plot with npcs
Just from looking at the mod it seems to drastically overhaul the AI and add things, changes textures. Just fucking don't do it on your first playthrough.
Dues Ex is literally one of the greatest games ever made in it's vanilla states. Modding is advised to wait for for a second playthrough. Dues Ex honestly doesn't really need to be modded anyways.
I used to pronounce this Dooos-Ex until I knew better. What can I say, 2016 was a great year of discovery.
>Dooos-Ex
kek
It is possible for something to be dated based on its graphics, controls, whatever. Just means it comes across as old. Not new. It's not a judgement of quality.
While I do recomend to do Vanilla first he is wrong about downloading NO mods before starting.
Kenties' mod is practically mandatory. It helps streamline other mod downloads and fixes some bugs that could potentially ruin the game for you.
