can we have a thread for this magnificent game?
I love it so much and miss it. I hope beyond all hope that it'll come to the switch's gamecube list but it's highly doubtful.

I just bought the card one, it was very cheap. Is it good?
haven't played the card version. that's episode 3, right?
if it's anything like the other episodes it'll be really fun. enjoy it.
i'll listen to the OST now & again but i doubt replaying it would be fun
You'd be surprised, man.
Try getting some friends to play it with you.
PSO2 for NA: never ever
Yup, that one. I never played I & II. I couldn't find a copy back in the day and now it's really expensive.
there's a private server for the pc version.
pioneer2.net I think.
I fucking loved this game so much. I still remember my older neighbor trying to show me how to do the duplication glitch.
and nothing of value was lost
i play this on wii now, but without netplay
you can force widescreen with nintendont which is pretty cool
I feel your pain user, I tried the jap servers and the game was glorious and levled up to almost max level.
I seriously wouldn't mind starting over again if it does come out to NA/West/Global. Game is just perfect to me.
I used to play this splitscreen with my friends every weekend when I first started highschool. Good times...
Gonna agree with . I played with a few friends on one of the private servers for a month or two and i think it still holds up fairly well. That might just be my nostalgia talking, though.
Worth it for single player?
There is heaps of nuance to the shitty combat.
Like you can time your attacks by delaying hitting the buttons by about 0.3 seconds without breaking combos, avoiding third attacks on some weapons, weaving combos with team mates to keep up hitstuns, walking backwards and using the menu to run fast past traps and enemies.
Nah you need a buddy, I think the PSP sequels are more singleplauer focuses though.
Not like you're missing out on much.
I replayed it a year ago
the music holds up
the gameplay sort of holds up
I don't know why I used to think De Rol Le was the hardest piece of shit in the world
What did you guys roll?
I was a Bluful and then Skyly HUmar. Mate was a Yellowboze RAmar.
He also dabbled in FOmar and me in RAmarl, but casts were Resta-less shits.
Would anyone buy a HD version? For which console?
Some of my best memories are playing this game with my brother and cousins in x4 split screen. Lag not withstanding.
I love this game more than anything, but no, I wouldn't. It really has aged poorly, for all the nuances it has. Nostalgia is really the only thing that kept it fun for me but I've played it through so much. It's finally time to let it rest.
would love to see it on a handheld.
Speaking of which, how was Phantasy Star Online DS?
You can run this in high resolution, gameplay as it was on Gamecube in Doplhin via emulation. Your PCs can do it widescreen with better graphics tweaks.
Models and textures are all as is of course, but it is less muddy and you can of course play with your controller of choice. I think you can connect to an online server too, maaaybe. Episode 3 runs like shit though.
>force widescreen
eww, why would you do this
you mean phantasy star zero?
was alright. it had online play which was a nice surprise.
Kind of sort of. I tried really hard to get into it but I could only get 4 or 5 mission in before I gave up. Maybe I needed to grind for better cards but I only had a single monster strong enough to do damage to the hunter. They can just equip tons of gear at once and it's stuff like nullify an attack dealing less than 3 damage, reduce damage by 2, take 15% less damage from altered animals.. It's just super difficult.

There was some mobile version of PSO2, anyone play it? Was it just bullshit?
>Would anyone buy a HD version? For which console?
I'd be getting it for PC or one of the handhelds. Well, I should say 3DS assuming that I'd want to play online, although I'd probably pick it up on Vita and just play single player if that was only an option.
PC version has a private server. Worth looking into. Also the game has been modified for widescreen and whatnot.
I'd play the pc version if I wasn't so paranoid about my pc fucking up.
I kinda wish there was a mega rerelease that combined Episode 3 with Blue Burst. Having a single character with both card progression and HUNTER? Mmm.
Maybe if they crammed it in with the portable games too, which I was told were similar in gameplay. Is that accurate to say?
I actually bought and played PSU for a bit, I really liked where the gameplay went, with Arts, plus Force and Ranger gameplay was fuckin' awesome. They lost something in the transition though.
FYI force had to equip spells into staffs and shit, so you'd actually quick select through Earth flavor staffs and Healing flavor staffs. Further, dual weild guns and sabers, and guns could actually go first person and you could strafe fire.
Force spells too were less auto target and more skillful to hit with. Fuck now I have nostalgia for a game I don't think I like?!
PSU was alright with me. i'm ashamed to say if the servers were still up, i'd pay to play it.
God, this game was so stupidly fun.
>I think the PSP sequels are more singleplauer focuses though.
The PSP Phantasy Star's were damn fun and still have online, probably not active though. Still waiting for Phantasy Star Portable 2 Infinity's tanslation patch.
PSP2's online server was shut down around july this year.
Oh shit, didn't know that. Offline is still fun though.
I will argue to this day that PSO is the best RPG on the gamecube.
yeah it's a fucking shame. PSP2i's server is still up though in japan.
it's a real shame we aren't getting anymore phantasy star games outside of japan. I fucking love the PSO games.
>tfw you're still grinding
>forever
>and ever
There's never really an escape from this.
I love it.
are you in blue burst?
Phantasy Star Nova is great and the NPC design is massive iprovement compared to the uncanny valley ones in PSO2.
I have nova, but I don't play it because I can't get the English translation to work.
PSO2 is no longer potato as of the shader update.
What is there to grind? Don't you have everything maxed out by now what are you even looking for
How do you heal as a cast, do you have the ten Trimates, Star Atomizers and then you are done or what?
Because I think, sure that'll handle part of a level but what about the Resta it?
its a useless plea at this point.
i haven't played in a year. might give it another go.
Literally just bought it and a gamecube to play it. I played the original on Dreamcast and loved it. Wanted the GC version for the no longer available online stuff and co op.
Wish Sega would reinvest in Phantasy Star in the West.
I played this game nonstop in offline multiplayer with friends throughout middle school and part of high school. I fucking loved it so much.
>what are you even looking for
...my destiny...
PSO2 looks like this now
Why did they ruin Klaris?
>just bought a gamecube to play it
i'm thinking of doing the same to try and get my black friend into it.
"""character development"""
Schthack is running some christmas event where you have a chance to find a PSO2 passport that lets you alpha test their PSO2 pserver. Fucking thing refuses to drop for me, but I'm still in normal mode.
Why not just play the JP version with a translation patch and an English speaking team?
they're working on PSO2?
that'll be interesting. I play on ephinea
I just started playing again this month on Ephinea since I discovered schthack lost everything awhile ago. I can't get my friends to play as much as me and I'm dying as I hold off to prevent level over them. I'm only level 26 and my mag is almost maxed and I already have G-assissin sabers. Haven't even started hard mode yet.
If you have the money, I think it's worth it. I was just going to buy a GC controller and play it on wii, but ''good'' condition controllers are almost as much as buying a system. So fuck it, whatever.
No regrets here. Been playing it the last week. Will probably always be a go to game for comfy nostalgia.
Im the guy who mentioned Dolphin before. Having beaten the game a bunch and been sufficiently satisfied, my mate and I made new characters and used Gameshark/genie codes to fuck the game into oblivion.
We made it so every enemy drops their rarest drop each time. Unlocked the levels, gave us both ridiculous stats and money and it was still legitimately hard to beat Ultimate Flowen. What the hell, yknow?
Despite our exploits you could still be Megid'd and one shot by various shit and we had to be quick on the Moon Atomizers. Plus he has that weird mechanic where he posseses you and you become Flowen and shit, don't remember that outside of Ultimate.
Then after hours we got a 'Good job' screen and like silence and a picture of our guys. Felt shit and we were sad.
>love this game to fucking death
>was super excited when PSO2 was announced
>was super excited when character creator demo was put out
>was super excited when NA servers were announced
>was blinded by my love of the original and forgot Sega are fucking hacks now
you can play the gamecube version online using the schthack server.
Does that require some kind of modding? I'll have to look into it.
I already have 3 maxed out characters on PSO2jp. I just want to try it out on a server hosted in America or Europe so I can try out some crazy combos that rely on fast weapon switching. Weapon switch speed and monster desyncs caused by other players using grapple moves are the only downsides of having a high ping and normally I don't mind it, but still. Another reason is not having to deal with cash shop shit like extra mag licenses, additional skill trees and character slots.
There are two teams working on PSO2 servers, one is schthack, the other is PolarisTeam.
I don't think it requires modding.
HUcast is the best.
RAcast is a close second.
HATE ROBOTS REEE
Ephinea, Ultima or schthack? Did anyone play on at least two of those? How do they compare?
Actually it is ironic that magic spells come fron disks, but robuts can't read them.
Playing just offline it gets boring for me like 10 hours later, because level up is so damn slow there.
Online is always fun with the right friends. But starting the game all over or making a new a new character? That is annoying after 15 years. If you could change classes through the game shit would be much better
Just release it digitally for any available platform possible, for like 10-15 dollars. It would sell.
>gc controllers
Huh? Like what? 40 dollars?
I play on ephinea.
it's pretty good I think.
Traps make the game ridiculously easy. Once you have the hang of things, you will rarely need to heal. A stack of Trimates should be all you really need.
Otherwise you bring along the local cure slut.
>tfw you will never get a Heaven Punisher
What do PSO fans think are problems with the game?
What would you want in a modern PSO?
OP here. i'm currently considering buying a gamecube and the broadband adapter so I can play on the private server.
has anyone here done that?
>what would you want in a modern PSO?
an official English release.
Really hard to get into it starting from scratch. You usually rely on mags and gears from another character or playing with friends. "More everything" and a less arcane mag breeding system wouldn't hurt either.
>gc controllers
>Huh? Like what? 40 dollars?
and GC's are like 50, and they come WITH the controller. So why not?
>dreamcast 3ds theme plays the PSO lobby music
based sega
I got one (1) Chainsawd somehow. Carried me through the game. Think it wasn't part of my ID and must have come from an alt character or something.
Other notables were God Hand +50. My mate got a launcher, we were excited but it turned out to be shit?
Nostalgia time? Rappy's Fan. Gigaboomba Claw. S.Beat Blade. G.Assassin Sabers. Yamato. Musashi. Stag Cutlery. Guilty Light. Annnnnnnd:
????????? DB SABER
>Not owning upwards of 9 or more gamecube controllers that youve collected over the years
What were u thinkin
You can emulate gamecube and still play with them for free, or get Blue Burst so you have Ep4
Fighting Force 2: Blunder of the Century
>Not owning upwards of 9 or more gamecube controllers that youve collected over the years
>what were you thinkin
I don't know user. I wasn't thinking...
Had a bunch of those. Also had an Excalibur and a Tsumikiri J-Sword, but I never got that damn Heaven Punisher.
>mfw you login and its the right time for heavens punisher
Vidya gunkino
I see. If it's about the same then it is expensive. In europe it's much cheaper
>gamecube sale like in 2005
>games and controllers for 9,99 euros each
>have like 80 euros to waste
>only bought 1 controller and 7 games(both Dks with those bongos, MGS TS, Mario Sunshine, Zelda 4 Swords, FF CC, Wave Race and some other shit)
Meh. I really wanted to buy more 2 controllers, but that sale really caught me at a bad time.
No point when the PC version is still playable online on private servers.
Check pioneer2.net.
It's a different game, not a mobile version of PSO2. And yeah, it's just mobile screen tapping rubbish.
Unf. I went on a cruise and was trapped walking past the gift shop a couple times each day for a week. Wave Race was in the window. It haunted me. I bought it. Read the manual. Had dreams about it. Couldn't play it for days till we got back home. Invaded my mind.
It was an ok game.
I have a wii. would I be able to play on the private server using the gamecube version on the wii if it's not homebrewed?
basically i'm asking if the wii acts as though the gamecube has the broadband adapter attached?
>Literally just bought it and a gamecube to play it.
Why? When you could play the PC version, with more content and actual functional online play?
I don't get why people nostalge for this verion in particular, to the point of sacrificing content and online play.
> I'm dying as I hold off to prevent level over them
Just start a new character to do low level stuff with them, m8. Don't cripple yourself. They probably won't stick with it long anyway, and you can go back to your original guy.
Man I played the hell out of this game. Both on the gamecube and on the PC. Lot of fond memories with that game. I could never get into more traditional MMO games
I've tried all three. Schthack is a mess. Also drama. Ultima has gameplay modifications that turn it into pay2win crap. Okay on low levels. Ephinea is good, all the new features are optional, you can play purist style if you want. Only complaint is that their pointless Jukebox feature needlessly increases update size and the custom launcher is too flashy. In game it's good. Definately the only way to go.
Schthack lost fucking everything and is run by fuckheads.
Ultima has the most players. Never played on it though.
Ephinea is great.
ephinea, i've only ever played the console versions til now and ephinea feels just the same if not better due to number keybinds for techs/items, plus extra optional features
FOnewm here, every other class sucks cocks
HUnewearl can only do everything
I was able to beat Normal, Hard, and Very Hard Episodes 1 and 2 by myself as a RAmar. It was pretty enjoyable, actually. Ultimate moves too fast for 1 character, though, and my favorite thing was to make Alts and play through normal with different friends.
TL;DR singleplayer is still fantastic, but co-op is better
