It need physical controls. That means a bluetooth gamepad. There are some you can clip your phone onto, but it's janky.

Mobile VR is a good solution. Bigger screen, 3D visuals and it's held onto your face which frees your hands to hold the controller.

The problem there is anything but Gear VR or Daydream has sucky head tracking latency.

Can be? Yes, but it requires extra hardware because touch controls suck for any game played in real time.

Thing is, every single "gaming-centric" smartphone to date has failed because people who want serious games on the go are just going to buy Vitas/3DS's.

>oneplus
mah nigga

but no, mobile gaming is shit and will be shit

What's the best android tower defense game?

>needs physical controls

So basically like a Sony Xperia Play? It's pretty sad that there aren't more devices like this.

That's because they all fell victim to a lack of decent software. Publishers aren't going to bother pushing software onto platforms nobody will use, and nobody is going to buy a platform that has nothing on it. Not to mention the Xperia Play was pretty crappy at everything else besides playing games.

Only when the "it's easy to get money off its store" and "you can clone a wildly sucessfuil game" memes dies.
Also it will never replace traditional gaming, given the different contexts etc..

I wish Samsung would make a new top of the line Galaxy S model with a gaming variant that had a slide out pad like this and extra side buttons to imitate shoulder buttons.

Think like the Galaxy S Edge models which are just variants of their respective S model aimed at people that swim/climb mountains/more "extreme" situations.
Edge have exact same specs as their respective regular counterpart but have much bulkier case and are thicker for added survivability in case of being dropped.

Just use that bulkyness from Edge to replace said dropped protection with a controller.

Too bad Samsung are too stupid for that and we will forever be stuck with phones without controllers, and Sony phones will forever be trash even if a new Xperia Play model happens in the future.

Playing on a tablet is a much better experience than playing on a phone.

Samsung flagship phones work with Gear VR though, which gives you a bigger screen than otherwise possible, stereoscopic 3D, and you can use a bt gamepad with it.

Also Open GL ES2.0 needs to die a quick death.
It is holding the phones back literally two generations.

I already use a Dual Shock 3 for my S6.
Also VR meme is terrible and I literally hate the concept, if you think that wearing a giant fucking helmet on your face for gaming is acceptable then you're mistaken.
And using DS3 or any other controller is also just not fit for the, you know, keeping in pocket portability factor.
Xperia Play did it right with that slide out keyboard but for some reason it hasn't been repeated or cloned in any newer phone which pisses me off immensely.

>ES2.0
Literally dead and not used in any "competent" Android game with focus on visuals. The GTA, Max Payne and Bully ports don't use it. Squeenix's Lightning Returns engine based game (Mobius Final Fantasy) doesn't use it either.

Also speaking of GTA.

VICE CITY STORIES ANNIVERSARY EDITION FUCKING WHEN?

What they do use?
UE4 still use this bullshit.

Son, ES2.0 was replaced by 3.0, 3.1 and then 3.2 ages ago, for starters.

Shame they released it too early because that was the time they got shitty hardware

Next year.

>Also VR meme is terrible and I literally hate the concept, if you think that wearing a giant fucking helmet on your face for gaming is acceptable then you're mistaken.

This isn't a "giant helmet", and the future will make a fool out of you. VR isn't going to disappear because one retard doesn't like it, and your reasons for not liking it are most likely rooted in not being able to afford it or having false preconceptions about what it's like.

It's not still shoddy as fuck in terms of driver support?

no
normalfags want "free" games that are simple for their plebian taste and maybe they buy some shit for small amout of money

have they even solved the battery drainage problem?
Are there even good mobile games?
If its freemium its shit.

Serious question, when the fuck have you done your research on the subject? Your information is horribly out of date.

Yes if you like 99¢ games with content locked behind microtransactions

They need a gamepad that clicks onto your phone in a way that makes it invisible when retracted just like how it was for that phone. It needs to be comofrtable, discreet, and look good.
Not to mention it needs to not be a bluetooth attachment that requires recharging.

How do you know?

lol no.

Yes it is.
But if you say is true, epic should fucking update that mobile profile.

It looks retarded and isnt easy to use. You block out all view making it weird to use on the train or w/e.

>VR isn't going to disappear because one retard doesn't like it

They have been trying to make VR work since the 80's. Shit hasn't caught on yet. Don't think it ever will.

It most certainly IS a helmet you blatant fucking shill.

>and the future will make a fool out of you
WHICH IS WHY THE VR IS DEAD IN THE WATER RIGHT NOW RIGHT?

HAAHHAHAHAHAHAH

No seriously, VR fucking flopped.
This isn't even VR, it's just a pair of screens glued to your fucking face with a motion sensor.

Call me back once they can do this:
youtube.com/watch?v=PJqbivkm0Ms

Cause THIS is what a real VR should be.

>Gear VR
Enjoy your sweaty face after 15 minutes of gameplay.

3D rendering was on the same state, until an arcade machine screamed daytona.

Epic don't really care about mobile which is where their problem lies.

Don't worry the phone's battery will be dead or the phone will need to pause for overheating before 15 minutes.

VR has issues, like you have to wear a headset. Nobody likes wearing those goggles while watching 3D movies. The headset also weighs half a kilo with the phone attached and extends out quite a bit, changing the point of balance on your head and the headset gets uncomfortable really quickly.

If you have the PC VR headsets, you have to deal with the fact that it's another monitor that you can't really use for anything productive, just VR.

This is the only viable way for it to work.

It will last about an hour before it runs out, although the phone will overheat on anything that resembles a game within 15 minutes.

Also that metal API from Apple sounds like a step backward.

>Driver support is piss poor
>Needs extra devices like controllers to handle anything that isn't turn based
>Small internal storage and lack of microsd card support in most devices also makes sure ports and shit can't happen, since app size limit is a thing

Maybe if Vulkan gets more widely adopted in Android, and the Nintendo Switch being a success will push for a new era of android devices with buttons

It's called the 3DS. Maybe Switch in the future.

Phone gaming will always be shit, both because of touch controls being shit for everything but the simples of games and the whole shitty freemium culture/expectations of consumers.

Any good tablets for gaming?

Anyone shilling the current "VR" clearly doesn't even know the sales data because VR has not caught on and in fact is flopping in general all over the world with miniscule adoption rate.

That's because NOBODY wants a fucking helmet glued to their face, same reason why 3D never caught on despite like 4 attempts at trying to push it already since the 60s.

3D and VR will only take off once both are possible without having to use any form of external hardware that you'd need to put on your fucking face.

People want interactive holograms like in Star Wars or Minority Report when they think "3D" and "VR".
Not two screens taped to your fucking face in a helmet that makes you look retarded and completely unacceptable in public + also uncomfortable and I say this as someone who tried all the "big" VR setups (Oculus, Vive, PSVR, Gear).

The technology is simply too primitive for that still.

iPad Pro.

>Apple
Who cares, only stupid people that love wasting money buy Apple products.

And no, being rich doesn't excuse stupidity.

t. Moderately richfag user

first time i ever see anyone mentioning 1+
everyone i know keeps mistaking mine for a samsung and they don't even know what a oneplus is even when i try to explain it, other than it being a phone that looks like a samsung

>Apple
Hearty kek, neck yourself.

>that shape
>Samsung
Those are some really dumb people you're surrounded with.

yes how could they ever mistake it for a samsung

Got a better suggestion?

>makes you look retarded and completely unacceptable in public
who the fuck would want to use VR in public? that shit is meant for use at home, you're going to walk the dog and play something in VR? what the fuck?

...

You're fucking blind if you think they look anything alike.
Samsung has completely flat edges with 90 degrees smooth curved corners.

OnePlus has curved top and bottom edges with uneven curved corners.

They look nothing alike, at least when talking about the OnePlus model from the OP.

Surface Pro. If you're just blindly throwing money around at least get something worthwhile. Galaxy, too.

>not the Nvidia Shield Tablet K1

Serious question, why would anyone get OnePlus when they're literally shittier versions of Samsung? And literal clones to boot.

OnePlus 3 is a clone of Galaxy S6 and 3T is a clone of S7, both inferior to their Galaxy counterparts.

only if you have a fire extinguisher at hand

people don't want housefires bro

The Surface Pro 4 runs every game on Steam.

You cannot beat that.

Hipster status and "muh customization"

You can customize Galaxy as well tho.

You're thinking of Galaxy S7 Edge.
Edge variants are thicker and water resistant, they probably fucked up the airflow on those.

is the xbone controller really as good as people claim it to be, i know the elite controller is shit

it's cheaper, at least for me it is

>tfw little sister is addicted to her phone
literally spends ALL her free time looking at her iPhone, also HAD to be an iPhone™ because anything else is "cheap garbage"
How the fuck do you stop this?

That's a valid reason, I can respect that.

It can be viable.

It doesn't need physical controls.

It needs physical controls to port games over 1:1 from consoles that have been using physical controls for years, but the basic concept that physical controls are a NECESSITY for GAMING AS A WHOLE is just retarded.
Chess doesn't use buttons. Football doesn't use buttons. Magic The Gathering doesn't use buttons. And all the versions of those that do are clunky and awkward compared to the real thing.

Give it a decade or so. Once we're able to completely break out of the binary input paradigm and fully embrace the absolutely staggering range of inputs afforded by even a low-end smartphone, and the high fidelity that those inputs will be afforded as technology advances, we'll start to see some amazing shit from the mobile market.

Step one, though, is to break out of the mindset that the only kind of video games that will ever exist are the ones designed from axioms that have remained largely unchanged from the mid 1970s.

Its kinda hard to control a character with the skin of your thumbs

No.
All mobile games are shallow. Phone game devs' target audience is people who aren't gamers.

But most of the games you listed do need physical controls. You're physically moving the chesspieces, in football you're kicking the ball, in MTG you're turning the cards, shuffling, etc.

The reason why buttons specifically are a good thing is they give you proper physical feedback at least to the point where it's substantial enough to develop muscle memory, which makes it faster and easier to react reflexively.

For example, an enemy is about to attack you and you need to dodge. Pressing a button on a physical controller is far easier and more reliable because you can feel said button at the tip of your thumb, which leads to less frustration when you can actually do things reliably instead of swiping about aimlessly in hopes that you do the right thing.

how is the cardboard vr for porn?

>All mobile games are shallow.

I beg to differ.

youtube.com/watch?v=6ipfJv4Qp6g

it's like a beefy 360 controller so if you liked the 360 one you'll probably like the bone controller.

Eventually sure, right now not really.

>oneplus
picked up a oneplus 3 back in september. I'm fucking in love with this phone.

Anybody on android that is still using a shitty samsung phone, seriously look into this one.

As someone that actually plays this game I can tell you it's incredibly shallow.
It's a massively dumbed down and simplified version of Lighting Returns with everything but combat being removed and the combat being dumbed down.

It has pretty graphics though and good soundtrack + despite the gamepaly being shallow it's quite addictive.

But you're a moron if you think it isn't shallow.

What's with Square Enix character designs? It looks so fucking bad, his tattoos and his arms.... armor? Holy fucking shit

Completely out of the question until they start getting real controls.

It's all the positive points of the 360 pad combined with easily the best dpad to date. If you really hated the layout of the 360, then it's not going to win you over, but if you liked the 360 pad it's more or less a straight upgrade.

After running out of ideas they hired 3d artists to stack detail on top of detail to mask the shit designs
It works among the normies, unfortunately

For some genres like puzzle, adventure and strategy, maybe. I've played some really good puzzle games on android.

For everything else, no until we get better controls. Which I doubt we'll get any time soon unless Apple starts doing it.

Phones do have a physical aspect though; the phone itself.

And also haptic feedback, which turns your body into a controller, and GPS positioning, which turns the entire fucking planet into a controller, facial recognition systems, heartbeat monitors, voice recognition, the list goes on and on. Phones have no shortage of control methods.

The problem isn't the phone, the problem is the games. If you're trying to make the type of games normally associated with physical buttons for hardware that doesn't have physical buttons, that's going to suck, yes. Same as it would (and does) suck to bring real sports or board games to video game hardware.

But, again, give it 10 years or so and we'll have phone games that work so well on phones that there won't actually be an equivalent on consoles, the same way there's no equivalent to DOOM in the real world. Completely new hardware requires completely new rules of design and engagement.
Saying it's never going to happen because phones don't conform to a by now ancient design paradigm is some serious Plato's Cave style thinking. It requires some major outside-the-box thinking that I don't think any of us are quite ready for yet.

Switch

So, is mobile truly the future of gaming?

I like your optimism but I'm still skeptic. Although the fact that mobile gaming is going to be a bigger part of the gaming industry than consoles next year we might start seeing a lot more serious mobile games.

how is a generic mobile vr helmet for porn?

Not with screen touch

It already is

How is Pokemon Go doing? Is it turned out to be a fotm gimmick?

Userbase collapsed just like everyone but fanboys predicted it would.

>next year we might start seeing a lot more serious mobile games.
Until mobile users show they are willing to pay more than a few dollars for a game, we won't.

Took a big hit after blocking rooted phones I'd assume

That's the starter outfit that's meant to look shit you retards, to showcase how "naked" you are when not having proper Job yet.

>that is still using a shitty samsung phone
See

control f, no summoners war. hows there gonna be a mobile gaming thread with the overlord not present?

yes, but not the bright future that you want it to be, also mobile games is very anti-indie considering all the scam artists who abuse the copyright laws for some easy money

Seriously? Fucking morons

Yes, just not in its current state.

>B-but Nintendo will surely save mobile gaming!

One company cannot do it alone. In order for mobile gaming to become truly viable for quality gaming, multiple entities must gather, in order to collectively raise the bar of quality to a normal level.

>VR actually pulled out nearly 3b
>fucking 40b on mobile

hoooly shit

Hell mobile game consumers even just told nintendo that $10 is too much for a mobile game.

>it's meant to be shit
Oh fuck off, this is just Squeenix and their retarded "artists" at it again. They could just make simple ragged clothes if they want to make you look weak, not this abomination

Yeah, they banned every single root user back in September and even implemented autobans for new rooted users that haven't even played the game.

You can circumvent this by turning off root every time you wanna play Pokeshit GoFuckYourself but that's way too bothersome anyway.

Combine this with the popularity fad bubble bursting and you get a dead game.
