the design isnt so scary itself, but man fuck this whole game
Here's one
Is Amnesia the game that killed the horror genre?
resident evil 4 did, if anything amnesia showed people how scary games can be again, i think VR will save horror games as a genre
Somebody please tell me the name of that game where you get a screamer when you try to exit it. I need to remember.
Amnesia was close to saving horror, and then youtube """lets players""" killed Amnesia.
Youtubers don't take anything away from the game. You're just looking for things to complain about at that point.
he's like that one kid in school that's like "why do the other kids always get better grades than me? man fuck those kids"
>You're just looking for things to complain about at that point.
welcome to Sup Forums
Resident Evil 7 made me feel pure fear for the first time in a long time.
...
Sucks that the only enemies are Outlast rejects and the Flubbernator
But they did change the mentality of the genre, to an extent at least. Now horror games try to appeal to the overstimulated scare-a-minute Twitch and Youtuber crowd because children find atmosphere boring.
I think it will worsen. It's like everyone has forgotten what made classic horror games like SH or REmake great. It was the creepy atmosphere and fun, interactive gameplay.
I think with VR, people are going to focus even more on walking simulators with in-your-face jumpscares.
>creepy atmosphere and fun, interactive gameplay
i feel like this can be achieved even better in VR, i look at it like this, in old horror games you could look away, hide behind and eye or give it to a friend but with VR you cant do that, the Resi 7 demo showed, it forces you to do things you dont want to do on a more personal scale
...
Why aren't they used in horror games?
No, Amnesia is what other horror games should try to achieve, it's the cancerous youtubers that ruined everything
Skeletons aren't spooky. Everyone has one.
If anything Five Nights at Freddy's 2 killed horror games
they are if you play as a human
Amnesia is one of the better horror games ever released, but it is heavily underrated and under-discussed because Sup Forums is contrarian and let the communities around a game shape their opinion of the game.
Its a shame that such a good game garnered such a fucking annoying following with letsplayers. Game developers should be learning from the atmospheric design of the game but instead they try and replicate the meme worthy nature of it, and thus shit games are made.
I love Amnesia. Personally I think that the DLC Justine is the best experience the game can offer. SOMA was really good as well, but no one paid attention to it because it tried to be a more nuanced experience which most people just don't have the attention span for it I suppose.
darkseed was spoopy as fuck due to gigers artwork
If anyone has a gear vr, Dreadhalls is basically a poor mans Amnesia, I'd kill for a VR Amnesia after playing that.
W-what do you mean??
>friend playing amnesia, because I said it´s fucking horror
>hurr durr what a shit game, all you do is walking
>there is no horror
me: Hey go and play Bioshock fucking awesome game with story
>hurr durr how shit, I thought I am a bigdaddy and just kill everyone
>what a shit game hurr durr
...
...
Amnesia is horror
bioshock is fucking atrocious with pants-on-head retarded story, while having superb atmosphere
> Oh no! The hall of death, the only way out of here is death!
Darkseed 1 and 2 were terrible games though.
...
amnesia came with the idea of having no way to protect yourself against monsters. Which is fine, unless you do that for every horror game.
he thought the game is boring because he can´t shoot anything.
>bioshock retarted story
I mean Bioshock 1. It´s not an oscar winning award story, but the plottwist was nice and the atmosphere is awesome, what else you need. But no he couldn´t just mass murder everyone, so it´s shit.
What a retard.
Right, just like e-sports doesn't kill entire genres
>amnesia came with the idea of having no way to protect yourself against monsters
there was a playstation game called hellnight that had the same concept, not to mention penumbra
amnesia did popularize it though
There is a skeleton living inside you right now.
>The first time you run into one in that spiral tower hallway
>Just stood there staring at it and it staring back for about a minute
One of the most memorable moments in Silent Hill for me.
...
>penumbra
didnt the first penumbra have very shitty combat they did away with after making amnesia?
For some of us, it's not inside. We ARE it.
Fuck that game, I have no idea how I finished it before but I can't play it anymore because it's scary to the point of being stressful and the shitty controls don't help.
right, black plague was the one without combat
I dislike amnesia because it relies on jumpscares too much. The flashbacks are really well done most of times, and i really liked these, but game is too obvious with suspense. If it had more moments that build up but end with no obvious escalation, i would like it much better. Let the player brace himself for impact, but prolong this feeling, playing with his nerves. Hell, even jumpscares work well sometimes, but they really hit better if you lull the player into false sense of safety.
that's pretty deep dude
Yeah. Easy to cheese it too. You could stand on top of a box and bludgeon the dogs without fear of retaliation.
I understand, there's something creepy about being able to see through the eyes of your enemies, especially when they notice you and get "excited", or when they start talking to themselves
no, user
you ARE living inside a skeleton
But that's the wrong one.
don't be a silly nigger, man
skeletons ain't real
I don't remember too many jumpscares. There's one in the morgue. The early game in particular had a lot of suspense, I don't think the player is in any actual danger until the first water level.
I get where you're coming from, but i'm a sucker for this kind of approach. This works really well if you bond with the protagonist. Morrowind's pilgrimage quest did this really well, when one of the shrines hinted that you need to drown in order to proceed.
Jesus fucking christ, this. Also the swamp creatures.
I finished SOMA yesterday, overall it's probably the best horror game I've played. The story was excellent, with some very interesting themes and philosophical dilemmas. An absolute must for sci-fi fans.
The game itself wasn't as scary as Amnesia though, except for pic related. Seriously FUCK that guy.
I think that was the developers intent and they nailed it spot on. It's one of my favorite enemies in the series.
>tfw being chased is one of my biggest fears
>tfw I really enjoyed Outlast
Am I a pleb? The jumpscares were shit but I thought the atmosphere and using a camera as your only way of seeing through the dark was cool. Excited for Outlast 2.
The story was shit too.
i'd love a horror game with checkpoints that'd let you defend yourself against monsters, bu make it really fucking hard, to the point you'd have to triple check yourself before you decide to fight. This would give the player an option to fight back, but make it either last resort solution, or matter of careful preparation.
...
i liked the whole game except for the main character who seemed so incredibly unfazed by the horror around him. really took me out of it.
they shouldve just had a silent protag like amnesia
So how many genres has e-sports killed already?
>9-10/10 enemies
Oh! I'm about to finish fetch quest #132. I wonder what will happen this time.
Gasp! An enemy spawned behind me! Just likes the other #131 times,
I better crouch and wait for it to de-spawn
don't
>buy Amnesia cause arghh potato sack for muh fucking, useless and overly hyped Portal 2, just for the sole sake of throwing money away
>people say it's scary as shit
>turn into a taffer
>scripted events start to happen
>ok
>monster happens
>chase him cause why not
>it disappears
>what?
>more scripted shit
>did a very basic cliche chore to exist library
>go back to main hall straight to the door next to fireplace
>muh monster.exe
>whoa I'm dead!
>nope
>it turns into dust
>eh!
>go out
>jelly thing stings me
>wine cellar
>troll monster as I trolled guards on Thief
>it doesn't go full drunk Benny
>jump out the closet to scare and turn him into dust
>it actually kills me
>respawn
>it's no longer there
>watt?
>water monster happens
>throw shit at him
>it dies
>whoa so scary
>troll more monsters
>they kill me and disappear
>is this the real power of an horror game?I mean really Return to The Cathedral was fucking more creepy
>end game
>run Justine
>everything is shacking and nothing is chasing me
>fetch potatoes shit
>uninstall game
Amnesia was anything but a 10/10 game
try enemy zero, it's old but I think it might be similar to what you're looking for
In less than a year a single game franchise has 3 sequels, a spinoff, and a movie. All while ruining the already damaged horror genre
...
TIME TO RIDE THE CLARENCE TRAIN
>man who isnt scared by horror games ends up not enjoying a horror game, we'll have more on this breaking news story at 11!
There's pretty much no better horror games that REmake and Silent Hill 1-3. Silent Hill 4 and RE 2-3 are pretty good too.
Is there really no other games that compare to Amnesia? I've been looking for a good horror game for a while and haven't really been able to find anything. I have the Penumbra games, Stalker, Metro, Amnesia, and Soma.
I even wasted a bunch of time on steam today trying to find a decent horror game and nothing really called out to me.
repetitive scripted stuff ain't scary .
Monsters despawning ain't scary
Fetch quests ain't scary
Your character shitting its pants dueto hallucinations ain't scary
literally provide even one example
the whole game is a sewer level, just cant stick with it.
Why play through a horror game at all if you aren't immersed?
Who would of that that if you try everything possible to not immerse yourself into an immersion horror game, it won't scare you?
Sheeeeeeeeeit.
>twelve year olds who think Soma is a legitimately scary game roam this board
>there are people who unironically consider its writing "deep"
Fucking kids
>he teleports around and you're just not allowed to look at him
Yea.... nah
you're so cool user
Especiallly the first time she comes falling down the stairway.
Project Zero / Fatal Frame 1 and 2 are my favourites
How can some people say that Amnesia wasn't ruined by the cancerous fanbase created by youtube E-celebs, but then turn around and say that Undertale was?
I thought amnesia's strength was in the anticipation of jump scares. They managed to keep you in a spot where you constantly expected to be jumped by a naked slackjaw dude, but it rarely happened. It was kinda nerve-wracking after a while.
Crawling Woman in Fatal Frame 3. Stuff of fucking nightmares. Shit startled me every fucking time I went into that crawlspace no matter how many playthroughs I did.
this
I wasn't aware of lets players ruining Amnesia because I played the game and never watch lets plays.
evil within did it better
...
...
Markiplier and Pewdiepie.
Then again, Pewdiepie hasn't really been scared of horror games lately.
Meanwhile, Markiplier's still shilling FNAF.
thats just a fucking myth
go and stay
every fucking horror game can be exploited to some degree that makes it not scary. you have to actually try and have some damn fun playing as a person that thinks its human and wants to survive, not run around like a retard dying over and over again, trying your best to exploit the AI
youtube.com
Have an unknown gem: Deep Fear on the Sega Saturn.
Finally a 10/10
Fight was too easy though
You expect me to read this boring greentext?
You say you didn't find the game scary jfc
I still have no fucking idea to this day why i was scared shitless by this level
You should think not bing able to see whatever fucks you over should lessen the stress, not increase it.
freddys has done more to revitalize the genre in a single year than the last 10+ full of developer failures
Exploit the ai? How? It's not my fault that the enemy spawns every time I grab the last item during a fetch quest.
Or that they despawn after a couple a seconds. What am I supposed to do? Fight them? It's not like I can, and staring at them only gets you killed.
REmake is by far the best horror game ever made and by far the best on its own series. Its just does everything right.
so i'm replaying the FEAR series and holy fuck those things from extraction point scare the fuck out of me. they look like some immobile dessicated skinny husks, and some of them are very fast with red eyes and they constantly stalk you
they disemboweled and killed my teammate in a horribly unnerving way
send help
I thought Scarlet was a lot more freaky and tense. Fucking dolls. Then you start seeing flesh underneath that porcelain skin.
